The Constitution Diagram of Uranium-Rich Uranium-Molybdenum Alloys

Description: The colybdenum-uranium equilibrium diagram has been studied, and the results are presented up to 50 atomic per cent molybdenum. Additions of molybdenum raise the melting point of uranium, forming a peritectic at about 1285 C. The solubility of molybdenum in gamma uranium is extensive. It decreases from 42 atomic per cent at the peritect temperature to 30 per cent at lower temperatures. Allots of about 28 to 30 per cent molybdenum content have been found to contain a metastable gamma. It can be … more

Grain Refinement of Uranium By Alloying

Description: Binary alloys of uranium with 38 elements in the range 0.01 to 1.0 at.% were made. Three alloys havirg nominal compositions of 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 at.% were made with most of the elements, and in addition, 12 ternary and quaternary alloys were made. The alloys were cast, rolled to 7/8-inch-diameter bars, heat treated, and examined for grain size. (auth)

Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium

Description: The amount of hydrogen normally present in zirconium and zirconium alloys suffices to reduce their ductility greatly in an impact test at room temperature, after slow cooling from 6OO deg F. Quenching from 6OO deg F or above gives high impact strength, as does removal of hydrogen by hightemperature vacuum aanealing. The evidence on hydrogen embrittlement, the diffusion, solid solubility, and equilbrium pressure of hydrogen in zirconium the microstructure, and the effects of hydrogen and heat tr… more

The Tensile Strength of Solid-State Bonded Aluminum and Nickel-Plated Uranium

Description: To aid in the evaluation of solid-state bending techniques for cladding natural-uranium fuel-element cores with aluminum, tensile specimens, 1/4 in. in diameter and 3 in. long were made and tested. Results show that these techniques are capable of producing satisfactory bonds between aluminum and nickel-plated uranium. Pressing conditions of 1 min at 950F and 6000 psi produced consintent bond strengths equal to the yield strength of 25 aluminum. When optimum bonding conditions are used, anodic … more

The Properties of Uranium Containing Minor Additions of Aluminum or Zirconium

Description: The tensile properties, hot hardness, and heattreatment characteristics of urarnium alloys containing up to 2.9 at.% aluminum or 4.0 at.% zirconium are described. The data shown that zirconium has a favorable effect upon the grain size, hardness, and tensile strength of uranium without materially affecting ductility. Additions of 3.8 at. % zirconium raised the tensile strength of uranium at room temperature fiom about 100,000 psi to about 200,000 psi, while the elongation in 2 in. increased fro… more
