The End-Plate Effect of a Horizontal-Tail Surface on Vertical Tail Surface

Description: Note presenting the end-plate effect of the horizontal-tail surface on the vertical-tail surface as theoretically studied by derivation of the flow corresponding to the condition of minimum induced drag and by solution of the usual lifting-line equations. The results obtained by the two methods were considerably different, indicated that the condition derived is not a close approximation to the actual condition.

The calculation of span load distributions of swept-back wings

Description: Span load distributions of swept-back wings have been calculated. The method used was to replace the wing with a bound vortex at the quarter-chord line and to calculate the downwash due to the system of bound and trailing vortices to conform at the three-quarter-chord line to the slope of the flat-plate wing surface. Results are given for constant-chord and 5:1 tapered plan forms, for sweep-back angles of 0 degrees, 30 degrees, and 45 degrees, and for aspect ratios of 3, 6, and 9. Some comments on the stalling of swept-back wings are included.

The Conformal Transformation of an Airfoil Into a Straight Line and Its Application to the Inverse Problem of Airfoil Theory

Description: "A method of conformal transformation is developed that maps an airfoil into a straight line, the line being chosen as the extended chord line of the airfoil. The mapping is accomplished by operating directly with the airfoil ordinates. The absence of any preliminary transformation is found to shorten the work substantially over that of previous methods. Use is made of the superposition of solutions to obtain a rigorous counterpart of the approximate methods of thin-airfoils theory" (p. 1).

A Solution of the Direct and Inverse Potential Problems for Arbitrary Cascades of Airfoils

Description: Methods are given of determining the potential flow plast an arbitrary cascade of airfoils and the inverse problem of determining an airfoil having a prescribed velocity distribution in cascade. Results indicated that Cartesian mapping function method may be satisfactorily extended to include cascades. Numerical calculation for computing cascades by Cartesian mapping function method is considerably greater than for single airfoils but much less than hitherto required for cascades.
