Geothermal development and environmental protection procedures

Description: The means of implementing the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969 in a Federal geothermal development program are discussed. Various geothermal development constraints are discussed, and the role of the Area Geothermal Supervisor (AGS) is outlined. Poling effect on piezoelectric behavior of PZT ceramics

Description: Rod-shaped PZT specimens were sintered with 1 w/o and 5 w/o PbO additives. ZrO/sub 2/ segregations were found in the 1% PbO specimen, and higher PbO segregations were found along the grain boundaries and at grain boundary with no ZrO/sub 2/ segregations in the 5% PbO specimen. On the basis of these microstructural observations and preliminary poling studies sintered thin disc specimens with a 3 w/o PbO additive were prepared for extensive poling studies. It was found that the breakdown limit of… more

Filtration and Dewatering: Review of Literature. [117 References]

Description: Filtration and dewatering are important aspects of any chemical process involved in producing solid product from a slurry. However, these operations are not studied in as much detail as other industrial operations like distillation, absorption, etc. In the past, the design of filtration equipment was considered more of an art than science. Only in the last few years have attempts been made to understand the fundamental mechanism underlying these operations. In this review, the present status of… more

The Response of Solids to Elastic/ Plastic Indentation

Description: A new approach for analysing indentation plasticity and indentation fracture is presented, The analysis permits relations to be established between material properties (notably hardness, yield strength and elastic modulus) and the dimensions of the indentation and plastic zone. The predictions are demonstrated to be fully consistent with observations performed on a wide range of materials. The indentation stress fields can also be adapted to generate predictions of indentation fracture threshol… more

Infrared-emission spectroscopy of CO on Ni

Description: We report the first observation of thermally emitted infrared radiation from vibrational modes of molecules adsorbed on clean, single-crystal metal surfaces. The observation of emission from CO adsorbed on Ni demonstrates the surface sensitivity of a novel apparatus for infrared vibrational spectroscopy, with a resolution of 1 to 15 cm/sup -1/ over the frequency range from 330 to 3000 cm/sup -1/. A liquid-helium-cooled grating spectrometer measures the thermal radiation from a room-temperature,… more

Development of the electroacoustic dewatering (EAD) process for fine/ultrafine coal

Description: Battelle (Columbus, Ohio) undertook development of its electro-acoustic (EAD) process to demonstrate its commercial potential for continuous dewatering of fine and ultrafine coals. The pilot plant and laboratory results, provided in this report, show that a commercial-size EAD machine is expected to economically achieve the dewatering targets for {minus}100 mesh and {minus}325 mesh coals. The EAD process utilizes a synergistic combination of electric and acoustic (e.g., ultrasonic) fields in co… more

A Study of Multistage/Multifunction Column for Fine Particle Separation.

Description: Hydrodynamic tests were continued in this quarter. Liquid circulation velocities are the characteristic parameters in the multistage column. Conductivity tracer response method has been set up for liquid circulation velocities measurement. The period of dampened sinusoidal conductivity signals can be clearly identified and then converted into linear and superficial liquid velocities.

A Study of Multistage/Multifunction Column for Fine Particle Separation.

Description: A non-agitated multi-stage column was constructed and applied to wastewater treatment. Preliminary oil/water separation tests were performed. Excellent separation results verifies the multi-function feature of the multi-stage column. Hydrodynamic behavior is considered as the underlying cause for the separation performance. Therefore, a series of experiments were carried out to investigate the hydrodynamic parameters, including gas holdups and liquid circulating velocities. The experimental dat… more

Unsupervised hyperspectral image analysis using independent component analysis (ICA)

Description: In this paper, an ICA-based approach is proposed for hyperspectral image analysis. It can be viewed as a random version of the commonly used linear spectral mixture analysis, in which the abundance fractions in a linear mixture model are considered to be unknown independent signal sources. It does not require the full rank of the separating matrix or orthogonality as most ICA methods do. More importantly, the learning algorithm is designed based on the independency of the material abundance vec… more

X-ray Magnetic Linear Dichroism of Fe-Ni Alloys on Cu(111)

Description: We have prepared Fe{sub x}Ni{sub 1-x} multilayers on Cu(111) in order to learn how to control the structure and magnetism of these thin alloy films, which are relevant to the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect used in magnetic disk drive heads. Using the Spectromicroscopy Facility (7.0.1.2) on Undulator Beamline 7.0 at the Advanced Light Source, we have measured X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) signals from both Fe and Ni 3p lines for fourteen different thin Ni-Fe alloy films on Cu(111)… more
