The measurement of fluctuations of air speed by the hot-wire anemometer

Description: "The hot-wire anemometer suggests itself as a promising method for measuring the fluctuating air velocities found in turbulent flow. The only obstacle is the presence of a lag due to the limited energy input which makes even a fairly small wire incapable of following rapid fluctuations with accuracy. This paper gives the theory of the lag and describes an experimental arrangement for compensating for the lag for frequencies up to 100 or more per second when the amplitude of the fluctuation is n… more

The Design of Airplane Wing Ribs

Description: "The purpose of this investigation was to obtain information for use in the design of truss and plywood forms, particularly with reference to wing ribs. Tests were made on many designs of wing ribs, comparing different types in various sizes. Many tests were also made on parallel-chord specimens of truss and plywood forms in place of the actual ribs and on parts of wing ribs, such as truss diagonals and sections of cap strips" (p. 223).

The Statistics of the Hypocritical Water Boiler

Description: From introductory paragraph: "In a slightly hypocritical water boiler the introduction of a single neutron may give rise to a fairly large burst of neutrons which dies out slowly. As was shown some time ago by Frankel and Nelson with the help of A. Horn the statistics of this multiplication process can be treated in a simple way for the hypothetical case that the number of neutrons produced per fission is two."

Fission product studies with plant dissolver solutions: IX-Iodine, X-Arsenic. SE-PC No. 61

Description: In continuing studies to characterize and identify fission product activities formed in the piles and appearing in plant dissolver solutions work was done to determine whether or not long-lived isotopes of certain elements were present. Two of the elements in this category were iodine and arsenic. The iodine isotope of particular interest was I{sup 129}. Its tellurium parent has been identified but no daughter activity attributable to iodine has been observed. The arsenic activities of interest… more

Acceleration Characteristics of R-3350 Engine Equipped with NACA Injection Impeller

Description: From Summary: "Qualitative investigations have shown that use of the NACA injection impeller with the R-3350 engine increases the inertia of the fuel-injection system and, when the standard fuel-metering system is used, this increase in inertia results in poor engine acceleration characteristics. This investigation was therefore undertaken to determine whether satisfactory acceleration characteristics of the engine equipped with the injection impeller could be obtained by simple modifications t… more

Methyl Methacrylate Casting Resin

Description: Abstract: "This report describes work done to improve the casting characteristics of methyl methacrylete resin under CMR-6-18 authorization. The experimental program was initiated with the objectives of decreasing casting time, bubble formation and shrinkage. It has been found that by use of a common solvent for monomer and polymer concentration in monomer can be attained greater than any previously reported in preparation of a methacrylate casting resign. Incorporation of this greater amount o… more

Estimated deceleration of airplane nose section jettisoned at various altitudes and airspeeds

Description: Memorandum presenting calculations made to determine the deceleration at any time after jettisoning of an airplane nose-section design typical of those which have been proposed as escape devices for high-speed airplanes. The decelerations were determined by two methods, one using successive approximations requiring graphical integration and the other giving reasonably close approximations by direct computation.
