A complete tank test of the hull of the Sikorsky S-40 flying boat - American Clipper Class

Description: The results of a complete test in the N.A.C.A. tank on a model of the hull of Sikorsky S-40 flying boat ('American Clipper') are reported. The test data are given in tables and curves. From these data non-dimensional coefficients are derived for use in take-off calculations and the take-off time and run for the S-40 are computed. The computed take-off time was obtained by the Sikorsky Aviation Corporation in performance tests of the actual craft.

Vibration Surveys of the P-40 Rudder and Fin-Rudder Assembly

Description: "The following surveys on the vibration response of the P-40 rudder and fin-rudder assembly were conducted during the fall of 1942 for the purpose of obtaining information on the flutter characteristics of high-speed airplanes of known performance. The tests on the rudder alone were made with the rudder suspended in a floating condition; the tests on the fin-rudder unit were made with the fin rigidly fastened to a concrete base" (p. 1). A variety of figures and diagrams for the assembly are pro… more

Measurement of Individual Aileron Hinge Moments and Aileron Control Characteristics of a P-40F Airplane

Description: "Flight measurements have been made of the individual aileron hinge moments, aileron rolling effectiveness pb/2V ,and stick-force characteristics in abrupt aileron rolls with a P-40F airplane (AAF No. 41-14119) over an indicated airspeed range from 108 to 304 miles per hour. Three methods for measuring the rate of change of hinge moment with angle of attack were investigated. Presented for comparison with the flight results are data from two-dimensional wind-tunnel tests of the wing-aileron pro… more

Some Flight Measurements on Pressure Distribution During Tail Buffeting

Description: Report presenting pressure-distribution measurements obtained from the horizontal tail surfaces of the Curtiss P-40K airplane during low-speed pull-ups to abrupt stall in which tail buffeting was experienced. The chordwise load distributions during buffeting are similar to those experienced during angle-of-attack changes. The location of the stall and frequency of stall disturbances are also described.

Electrodeposition research progress report

Description: This report contains a review of this work conducted by the Electrodeposition Group for the last six months. Pictures and a discussion of the method used to convert production solutions to postum to hydrofluoride acid solutions of postum are given. Attempts to plate postum in an inert atmosphere by remote control have been made. As yet no successful runs have been completed. Standardization of normal calomel electrodes by comparison to silver-silver chloride electrodes and to hydrogen electrode… more

Gamma scale chemistry progress report

Description: This report considers the work done during the year ending June 30, 1948, present work being done and future plans on the determination of formulas, methods of preparation, and properties of as many compounds of postum as possible. An experimental approach to such a research problem on the element postum requires that procedures which may be used deal with ultramicro quantities of material. Such procedures on an ultramicro or gamma scale require special techniques by personnel trained in manipu… more

General chemistry progress report

Description: Decomposition potentials of bismuth solutions of 1.037 and 0.509 grams of the metal per 100 ml. of 1.5 nitric acid were found to be -0.06 and -0.09 volts to N.C.E. These results confirm previous values and indicate that bismuth will not be reduced from production solutions at the potential of the normal calomel electrode. A summary of research in progress, completed, or anticipated is given.

A new device for filtering hydrofluoric acid and other strong acids. Information report

Description: During the course of a research problem involving hydrofluoric acid it became necessary to filter concentrated hydrofluoric solutions to remove various solid materials. The search for a suitable filter media finally led to the use of a commercially manufactured plastic material known as ``Sponge Teflon`` (polytetrafluoroethylone) which is produced by the DuPont Company. This material, which comes in 1/8 in. sheets, is used primarily as a gasket material in acid lines, and is impervious to all a… more
