Search for anomalous production of multiple leptons in association with $W$ and $Z$ bosons at CDF

Description: This paper presents a search for anomalous production of multiple low-energy leptons in association with a W or Z boson using events collected at the CDF experiment corresponding to 5.1 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity. This search is sensitive to a wide range of topologies with low-momentum leptons, including those with the leptons near one another. The observed rates of production of additional electrons and muons are compared with the standard model predictions. No indications of phenomena beyond the standard model are found. A 95% confidence level limit is presented on the production cross section for a benchmark model of supersymmetric hidden-valley Higgs production. Particle identification efficiencies are also provided to enable the calculation of limits on additional models.

Limits on the anomalous ZZ{gamma} and Z{gamma}{gamma} couplings in p{anti p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV

Description: The authors performed a direct search for the anomalous ZZ{gamma} and Z{gamma}{gamma} couplings by studying p{anti p} {yields} {ell}{ell}{gamma} + X, ({ell} = e, {mu}) events at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A fit to the transverse energy spectrum of the photon in the signal events, based on the data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.3 pb{sup {minus}1} (13.7 pb{sup {minus}1}) for the electron (muon) channel, yields the following 95% confidence level limits on the anomalous CP-conserving ZZ{gamma} couplings: {vert_bar}h{sub 30}{sup Z}{vert_bar} < 1.8 (h{sub 40}{sup Z} = 0), and {vert_bar}h{sub 40}{sup Z}{vert_bar} < 0.5 (h{sub 30}{sup Z} = 0), for a form-factor scale {Lambda} = 500 GeV. Limits for the Z{gamma}{gamma} couplings and CP-violating couplings are also discussed.

Search for anomalous WW and WZ production at D0

Description: We present a preliminary result from a search for anomalous WW and WZ production in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV using p{bar p} {yields} e{nu}jj events observed during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A fit to the p{sub T} spectrum of W(e{nu}) yields direct limits on the CP-conserving anomalous WW{gamma} and WWZ coupling parameters of -0.89 < {Delta}{kappa} < 1.07 ({lambda} = 0) and -0.66 < {lambda} < 0.67 ({Delta}{kappa} = 0) at the 95% confidence level, assuming that the WWZ coupling parameters are equal to the WW{gamma} coupling parameters, and a form factor scale {Lambda} = 1.5 TeV.

Search for light top squarks with the D{O} detector

Description: We present preliminary results of a search for pair produced top squarks, the supersymmetric partners to the top quark, under the assumption that the two-body decay {bar t}{sub 1} {yields} b{bar W}{sub 1} and three-body decay {bar t}{sub 1} {yields} bW{bar Z}{sub 1} are kinematically forbidden. This scenario is realized if {bar t}{sub 1} is considerably lighter than all other squarks as well as {bar W}{sub 1}, all {bar v}s, and the top quark. Such light top squarks will dominantly decay via {bar t}{sub 1} {yields} c{bar Z}{sub 1} yielding a signal of two acollinear jets with (E){sub T}. The data reported here were taken during the 1992-1993 run of the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p{bar p} collider operating at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV.

Search for first and second generation leptoquarks at D0

Description: A search for first and second generation pair produced scalar leptoquarks has been done with the DO detector at Fermilab`s p{bar p} machine with {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. Leptoquarks are assumed to be strictly generational; for example, a first generation leptoquark couples only to the electron, its neutrino, and the u and d quarks. 95% C.L. mass limits of 133 GeV/c{sup 2} and 120 GeV/c{sup 2} for respective 100% and 50% decay branching ratios to electron plus quark for first generation scalar leptoquarks have been published. The preliminary results of a search for second generation scalar leptoquarks in the absence of a signal are mass limits of 111 GeV/c{sup 2} and 89 GeV/c{sup 2} for 100% and 50% decay branching ratios to muon plus quark. A feature of these mass limits is that they are independent of the unknown coupling of the leptoquark to leptons and quarks. The detection for e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} and e-p machines depends on the strength of this coupling.

Searches for new gauge bosons using the D0 detector

Description: We present the results of searches for additional gauge bosons beyond the W and Z bosons using the 1992-1993 Tevatron data set collected with the D0 detector. The signatures studied are W{prime} {yields} e{nu}, W{prime} {yields} {tau}{nu} with {tau} {yields} e{nu}{bar {nu}}, assuming stable neutrinos; W{sub R} {yields} e + X and W{sub R} {yields} eejj, assuming massive neutrinos; and Z{prime} {yields} ee. Lower limits on the W{prime} mass and Z{prime} mass at the 95% confidence level, and the mass exclusion contour in the W{sub R} mass vs. neutrino mass plane are presented.

Results for strange particle production from BNL experiment E802

Description: Results are presented for inclusive measurements of ..pi.., K, proton and deuteron spectra from 14.5 A/center dot/GeV/c Si central collisions with Au targets. Pseudo-rapidity distributions of charged particles from a variety of targets are also shown. Ratios of K to ..pi.. yields are large and increase with p/sub /perpendicular// for Si + Au collisions. 4 refs., 11 figs.

Results from the BNL E802 spectrometer for 14. 5 GeV/c per nucleon silicon beams

Description: We present selected results of measurements of inclusive ..pi.., K, proton, and deuteron spectra from 14.5 A GeV/c Si collisions with various targets. Results of neutral energy and charged particle dN/d/eta/ measurements are also discussed. Large K to ..pi.. ratios are observed in Si + Au collisions. A limit on {sigma} {center_dot} BR (B{sub c}{sup {+-}} {yields} J/{psi} + {pi}{sup {+-}})/{sigma} {center_dot} BR(B{sub u}{sup {+-}} {yields} J/{psi} + K{sup {+-}}) in {radical}s = 1.8 TeV proton-antiproton collisions

Description: We report on the results of a search for the B{sub c} (b{bar c}) meson in the decay B{sub c}{sup +-} {yields} J/{psi} + {pi}{sup +-}. This search is guided by a control sample of decays of B{sub u} mesons to J/{psi} + K and uses {approx_equal} 75pb{sup -1} of data collected at the Collider Detector Facility (CDF) at Fermilab. The lifetime of the B{sub c} meson is unknown, so the 95% confidence level limit on {sigma} {center_dot} BR(B{sub c} {yields} {psi} + {pi})/{sigma} {center_dot} BR(B{sub u} {yields} {psi} + K) is obtained as a function of the B{sub c} lifetime.

Production of {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, K{sup 0}, K*{sup 0}, {phi}, p and {Lambda}{sup 0} in hadronic Z{sup 0} decays

Description: The authors have measured production rates as a function of momentum of the identified hadrons {pi}{sup +}, K{sup +}, K{sup 0}, K*{sup 0}, {phi}, p, {Lambda}{sup 0} and their antihadrons in inclusive hadronic Z{sup 0} decays, as well as separately in decays into light, c and b flavors. In addition they have compared hadron and antihadron production rates in light quark (rather than antiquark) jets. The SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector was used to identify charged hadrons. The vertex detector was used to tag high-purity samples of light- and b-flavor events. The electron beam polarization was used to tag samples of quark and antiquark jets. Clear flavor dependences are observed, consistent with expectations based upon measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. They use the light-flavor results to test the predictions of MLLA QCD and of various fragmentation models. Differences between hadron and antihadron production in light quark jets are observed at high momentum fraction, providing direct evidence that higher-momentum particles are more likely to contain a primary quark or antiquark, and they use these results to make a new direct measurement of strangeness suppression in the jet fragmentation process.

Pion, kaon, proton and anti-proton transverse momentum distributions from p+p and d+Au collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 200 GeV

Description: Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, and p({bar p}) from 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (R{sub dAu}) between (p+ {bar p}) and charged hadrons (h) in the transverse momentum range 1.2 &lt; p{sub T} &lt; 3.0 GeV/c is measured to be 1.19 {+-} 0.05(stat) {+-} 0.03(syst) in minimum-bias collisions and shows little centrality dependence. The yield ratio of (p + {bar p})/h in minimum-bias d+Au collisions is found to be a factor of 2 lower than that in Au+Au collisions, indicating that the Cronin effect alone is not enough to account for the relative baryon enhancement observed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC.

Test beam results for silicon microstrip detectors with VLSI read-out

Description: A telescope consisting of three silicon microstrip detectors has been tested in a high energy positron beam at SLAC. Each detector has trips with 25 micron pitch and is read out by two 128-channel NMOS integrated circuits (''Microplex''). Results on the signal-to-noise ratio, spatial resolution, and two-track separation are given.

An improved Neutrino Oscillations Analysis of the MiniBooNE Data

Description: We calculate the exclusion region in the parameter space of {nu}{sub {mu}} {yields} {nu}{sub e} oscillations of the LSND type using a combined fit to the reconstructed energy distributions of neutrino candidate samples from the MiniBooNE data obtained with two different particle identification methods. The two {nu}{sub e} candidate samples are included together with a high statistics sample of {nu}{sub {mu}} events in the definition of a {chi}{sup 2} statistic which includes the correlations between the energy intervals of all three samples and handles the event overlap between the {nu}{sub e} samples. The {nu}{sub {mu}} sample is introduced to constrain the effect of systematic uncertainties. This analysis increases the exclusion limit in the region {Delta}m{sup 2} {approx}&lt; 1eV{sup 2} when compared with the result previously published by the collaboration, which used a different technique.

Monopole search using an accelerator detector

Description: A neutrino detector at the Brookhaven AGS has been used to investigate the feasibility of using an already constructed apparatus for GUT monopole searches. A flux limit (90%CL) of 5.2 x 10/sup -12/ cm/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/ str/sup -1/ was found. The limitations of such an approach are discussed.

Neutrino-oscillation experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory

Description: Two groups have submitted major proposals for neutrino oscillation searches at BNL. Both are two detector experiments with a close detector at approx. = 100m and a far detector at approx. = 900m. While the details of the experiments are quite different, both groups expect to obtain nu/sub ..mu../ disappearance limits of delta m/sup 2/sin2 theta approx. = 0.1 - 0.2 for small mass difference and sin/sup 2/2 theta at the few percent level for the most sensitive delta m/sup 2/(approx. = 25eV/sup 2/). Since both detectors are designed to identify electrons as well as muons they expect to obtain significant limits on nu/sub e/ appearance (nu/sub ..mu../ ..-->.. nu/sub e/). Each has received approval for a single detector (Phase I) experiment with the two detector phase (Phase II) still pending. The present status of the single detector experiments is detailed. (WHK)

Search for neutrino oscillations at the Brookhaven AGS

Description: We report on a search for neutrino oscillations of the type nu/sub ..mu../ ..-->.. nu/sub e/ in a detector located an effective distance of 96m from the neutrino source in the wide band neutrino beam at the Brookhaven AGS. No excess of electron events was observed. The resulting upper limit on the strength of the mixing between nu/sub ..mu../ and nu/sub e/ in the case of large mass difference ..delta..m/sup 2/ = absolute value m/sub 1//sup 2/ - m/sub 2//sup 2/ between the neutrino mass eigenstates m/sub 1/ and m/sub 2/ is sin/sup 2/2..cap alpha.. less than or equal to 3.4 x 10/sup -3/ at 90% CL. The corresponding upper limit for small mass difference is ..delta..m/sup 2/sin2..cap alpha.. < 0.43 eV/sup 2/. 9 refs.

Charged hadron production in e/sup /+//e/sup /-// annihilation at. sqrt. s = 29 GeV

Description: We have used data from the Time Projection Chamber at the SLAC storage ring PEP to study the inclusive production of charged hadrons in e/sup /+//e/sup /-// annihilation at a center of mass energy of 29 GeV. Charged particles were identified by simultaneous dEdx and momentum measurements. We present cross sections and particle fractions for ..pi../sup/plus minus//, k/sup + -/, and p(/ovr/p//) as a function of energy, momentum, rapidity, and transverse momentum. We compare the predictions of various hadronization models to the data and note discrepancies at high momentum.

Summary report of neutral detector subgroup

Description: The advantages and disadvantages of calorimeters for use at ISABELLE are discussed including hadron calorimeters, liquid argon calorimeters, uranium scintillator calorimeters, electromagnetic shower detectors, and iron plate calorimeters. A calorimeter is described that is suitable for electromagnetic and hadronic events and is constructed with a front section of narrow Pb strips to start and develop the electromagnetic shower. A section of U towers to contain hadronic showers follows. This calorimeter would shield out U radioactivity and measure the energy and position of all particles except neutrinos and muons. (FS)

Experimental limits on massive neutrinos from e/sup +/e/sup /minus// annihilations at 29 GeV

Description: A search was made in 29 GeV e/sup +/e/sup /minus// annihilations for massive neutrinos decaying to e/sup +-/X/sup /minus plus//(..nu..) where X is a muon or meson. A 300 pb/sup /minus/1/ data sample yielded just one candidate event with a mass m/sub ex/ > 1.8 GeV. Significant limits are found for new neutrinos with masses from 1.8 to 6.7 GeV and with mixing parameters in the range 10/sup /minus/6/ < chemically bondUchemically bond/sup 2/ < 1. 12 refs., 4 figs.

Search for third generation vector leptoquarks in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions

Description: The CDF experiment has searched for production of a third generation vector leptoquark (VLQ3) in the di-tau plus di-jet channel using 322 pb{sup -1} of Run II data. We review the production and decay theory and describe the VLQ3 model we have used as a benchmark. We study the analysis, including the data sample, triggers, particle identification, and event selection. We also discuss background estimates and systematic uncertainties. We have found no evidence for VLQ3 production and have set a 95% C.L. upper limit on the pair production cross section {sigma} to 344 fb, and exclude VLQ3 in the mass range m{sub VLQ3} &gt; 317 GeV/c{sup 2}, assuming Yang-Mills couplings and Br(LQ3 {yields} b{tau}) = 1. If theoretical uncertainties on the cross section are taken into account, the results are {sigma} &lt; 353 fb and m{sub VLQ3} &gt; 303 GeV/c{sup 2}. For a VLQ3 with Minimal couplings, the upper limit on the cross section is {sigma} &lt; 493 fb ({sigma} &lt; 554 fb) and the lower limit on the mass is m{sub VLQ3} &gt; 251 GeV/c{sup 2} (m{sub VLQ3} &gt; 235 GeV/c{sup 2}) for the nominal (1{sigma} varied) theoretical expectation.

Antiprotons and the Crystal Ball

Description: During the 1998 running of the Crystal Ball experiment, a couple of brief test runs were done with the C6 beamline tuned to produce antiprotons. Specifically, one shift on July 29th produced runs 329-334 with the beam momentum set for 650 MeV/c, run 355 was done on July 31st with a 550 MeV/c beam momentum, and run 926-929 were obtained in a single shift on November 3rd, also with a beam momentum of 550 MeV/c. The beam tune for the November data was greatly superior to that of the July data, however. Therefore, only the November data have been analyzed in detail, and the results of this analysis are presented in this note. Due to the paucity of statistics that were obtained, it was decided not to attempt to publish the results. However, the results are valuable as a tool for planning a possible future program of dedicated measurements of antiproton-proton annihilation into all-neutral final states using the Crystal Ball. The data in fact show that the Crystal Ball with its large angular acceptance and multi-photon capability would be an excellent detector for such an experiment. Only one other such experiment (the Crystal Barrel experiment at CERN/LEAR) has ever been done in the past. Also in this document is a survey of published results for old antiproton-proton experiments, some discussion of physics issues that are relevant to measurements of {anti p} + p {r_arrow} all-neutral final states, and some estimates about the kinds of experiments they could contemplate doing in the C6 and D6 lines at the AGS.
