An Order-of-Magnitude Estimation of Benzene Concentration in Saltstone Vault

Description: The contents of Tank 48 that include the tetraphenylborate (TPB) precipitates of potassium and cesium will be grouted and stored in the Saltstone vault. The grouting process is exothermic, which should accelerate the decomposition of TPB precipitates eventually to benzene. Because the vault is not currently outfitted with an active ventilation system, there is a concern that a mixture of flammable gases may form in the vapor space of each cell filled with the curing grout. The purpose of this s… more

First direct two-sided bound on the B0(s) oscillation frequency

Description: The authors report the first direct two-sided bound on the B{sub s}{sup 0} oscillation frequency using a large sample of B{sub s}{sup 0} semileptonic decays corresponding to approximately 1 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment in 2002-2006 during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The flavor (i.e., B{sub s}{sup 0} or B{sub s}{sup 0}) of the B{sub s}{sup 0} meson at the time of production was found using an opposite-side tagging technique, and the flavor at t… more

b{bar b} production correlations, b{bar b} mixing and {epsilon}{sub B} at CDF

Description: We present preliminary measurements of b{bar b} production correlations, the average B{bar B} mixing, and a limit on the CP violating parameter {epsilon}{sub b} using dimuon events from the dual semileptonic decay of b{bar b}. Data used in this analysis was taken during the 1992--1993 CDF run of the Fermilab Tevatron collider with an integrated luminosity of 17.4 {plus_minus} 0.6 pb{sup {minus}1}. The results on b{bar b} production correlations are compared to predictions of next-to-leading ord… more

Report of the APS Neutrino Study Reactor Working Group

Description: The worldwide program to understand neutrino oscillations and determine the neutrino mixing parameters, CP violating effects, and mass hierarchy will require a broad combination of measurements. The group believes that a key element of this future neutrino program is a multi-detector neutrino experiment (with baselines of {approx} 200 m and {approx} 1.5 km) with a sensitivity of sin{sup 2} 2{theta}{sub 13} = 0.01. In addition to oscillation physics, the reactor experiment may provide interestin… more

Feedback damper system for quadrupole oscillations after transition at RHIC.

Description: The heavy ion beam at RHIC undergoes strong quadrupole oscillations just after it crosses transition, which leads to an increase in bunch length making rebucketing less effective. A feedback system was built to damp these quadrupole oscillations and in this paper the characteristics of the system and the results obtained are presented and discussed.

Measurement of the B0(s) - anti-B0(s) Oscillation Frequency

Description: The authors present the first measurement of the B{sub s}{sup 0}-{bar B}{sub s}{sup 0} oscillation frequency {Delta}m{sub s}. They use 1 fb{sup -1} of data from p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The sample contains signals of 3600 fully reconstructed hadronic B{sub s} decays and 37,000 partially reconstructed semileptonic B{sub s} decays. They measure the probability as a function of proper decay time that the B{sub s} deca… more

ENSO Simulation in Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Models: Are the Current Models Better?

Description: Maintaining a multi-model database over a generation or more of model development provides an important framework for assessing model improvement. Using control integrations, we compare the simulation of the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and its extratropical impact, in models developed for the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report with models developed in the late 1990's (the so-called Coupled Model Intercomparison Project-2 [CMIP2] models). Search for muon-neutrino to electron-neutrino transitions in MINOS

Description: This letter reports on a search for {nu}{sub {mu}} {yields} {nu}{sub e} transitions by the MINOS experiment based on a 3.14 x 10{sup 20} protons-on-target exposure in the Fermilab NuMI beam. We observe 35 events in the Far Detector with a background of 27 {+-} 5(stat.) {+-} 2(syst.) events predicted by the measurements in the Near Detector. If interpreted in terms of {nu}{sub {mu}} {yields} {nu}{sub e} oscillations, this 1.5 {sigma} excess of events is consistent with sin{sup 2}(2{theta}{sub 13… more

Search for active neutrino disappearance using neutral-current interactions in the MINOS long-baseline experiment

Description: We have measured the rates and spectra of neutral-current neutrino interactions in the MINOS detectors, which are separated by 734 km. A depletion in the rate at the far site would indicate mixing between {nu}{sub {mu}} and a sterile particle. The depletion of the total neutral-current event rate at the far site is limited to be below 17% at 90% confidence level without {nu}{sub e} appearance. Assuming oscillations occur at a single mass-squared splitting, a fit to the neutral- and charged-curr… more

Search for sterile neutrino mixing in the MINOS long baseline experiment

Description: A search for depletion of the combined flux of active neutrino species over a 735 km baseline is reported using neutral-current interaction data recorded by the MINOS detectors in the NuMI neutrino beam. Such a depletion is not expected according to conventional interpretations of neutrino oscillation data involving the three known neutrino flavors. A depletion would be a signature of oscillations or decay to postulated noninteracting sterile neutrinos, scenarios not ruled out by existing data.… more

A Search for Lorentz Invariance and CPT Violation with the MINOS Far Detector

Description: We searched for a sidereal modulation in the MINOS far detector neutrino rate. Such a signal would be a consequence of Lorentz and CPT violation as described by the Standard-Model Extension framework. It also would be the first detection of a perturbative effect to conventional neutrino mass oscillations. We found no evidence for this sidereal signature and the upper limits placed on the magnitudes of the Lorentz and CPT violating coefficients describing the theory are an improvement by factors… more

Charge-separated atmospheric neutrino-induced muons in the MINOS far detector

Description: We found 140 neutrino-induced muons in 854.24 live days in the MINOS far detector, which has an acceptance for neutrino-induced muons of 6.91 x 10{sup 6} cm{sup 2} sr. We looked for evidence of neutrino disappearance in this data set by computing the ratio of the number of low momentum muons to the sum of the number of high momentum and unknown momentum muons for both data and Monte Carlo expectation in the absence of neutrino oscillations. The ratio of data and Monte Carlo ratios, R, is R = 0.… more

Effect of wakefields on first order transport in the SLC linac

Description: The limitation in increasing the beam current in the SLC linac comes from the emittance growth caused by wakefields. Simulations of the beam transport that model the wakefield dynamics are being done to study methods to control this growth. To verify the theoretical estimates of the wakefield strengths assumed in these simulations, data were taken which are sensitive to their effect on the first order linac transport. Specifically, the dependence of single beam loading and betatron motion on be… more

Measurement of wakefield suppression in a detuned x-band accelerator structure

Description: Research is underway at SLAC to develop accelerator structures for a next generation linear collider. A full-scale prototype X-band structure has been built in which the dipole mode frequencies were detuned to suppress the long-range transverse wakefield by about two orders of magnitude. To verify that the detuning works as expected, a facility to measure the long-range wakefield, called the Accelerator Structure SETup, or ASSET, was constructed in the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). This paper pre… more

The Neutrino Flux Prediction at MiniBooNE

Description: The Booster Neutrino Experiment (MiniBooNE) searches for {nu}{sub {mu}} {yields} {nu}{sub e} oscillations using the {Omicron}(1 GeV) neutrino beam produced by the Booster synchrotron at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). The Booster delivers protons with 8 GeV kinetic energy (8.89 GeV=c momentum) to a beryllium target, producing neutrinos from the decay of secondary particles in the beam line. We describe the Monte Carlo simulation methods used to estimate the flux of neutrinos f… more

First Observation of Coherent pi0 Production in Neutrino Nucleus Interactions with E(nu) < 2 GeV

Description: The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab has amassed the largest sample to date of {pi}{sup 0}s produced in neutral current (NC) neutrino-nucleus interactions at low energy. This paper reports a measurement of the momentum distribution of {pi}{sup 0}s produced in mineral oil (CH{sub 2}) and the first observation of coherent {pi}{sup 0} production below 2 GeV. In the forward direction, the yield of events observed above the expectation for resonant production is attributed primarily to coherent prod… more

A Search for electron neutrino appearance at the Delta m**2 ~ 1- eV**2 scale

Description: The MiniBooNE Collaboration reports first results of a search for {upsilon}{sub e} appearance in a {upsilon}{sub {mu}} beam. With two largely independent analyses, we observe no significant excess of events above background for reconstructed neutrino energies above 475 MeV. The data are consistent with no oscillations within a two neutrino appearance-only oscillation model.

Operation of the AGS Polarized Beam

Description: A polarized proton physics run took place during January, 1988, at the Brookhaven AGS. It is the purpose of this paper to review the tune-up period preceding that run. This was the third such run at the AGS; the others occurred in June of 1984 and February of 1986. Some comparisons will be drawn among these. A thorough review of the history and hardware associated with the acceleration of polarized protons at the AGS can be found in the proceedings of the last meeting of this group at Protvino … more
