Nd-YAG laser welding of the fiber optic connector to the header shell on the 2SL actuator

Description: An investigation was completed to determine the feasibility of laser welding a fiber optic connector at a right angle to the header shell of the 2SL actuator. The work was completed at the request of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). These studies showed a minimal temperature rise at the fiber-to-connector shell seal area and essentially no loss in light transmission after welding. Both metallographic sections and tensile pull-test failure values were obtained. This study proves feasibilit… more

Impact of Rock Bolts on Seepage

Description: Characterization of seepage into drifts in unsaturated fractured tuff is a key factor for assessing the long-term viability of the proposed high level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. Rock bolts are among the methods proposed for ground control in the emplacement drifts. They may provide a conduit whereby percolating water that would otherwise bypass the drift will seep into the drift. The objective of this study is to assess the impact that the use of rock bolts may have on seepage.… more

Irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking of HTH Alloy X-750 and Alloy 625

Description: In-reactor testing of bolt-loaded compact tension specimens was performed in 360 C water. New data confirms previous results that high irradiation levels reduce SCC resistance in Alloy X-750. Low boron heats show improved IASCC (irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking). Alloy 625 is resistant to IASCC. Microstructural, microchemical, and deformation studies were carried out. Irradiation of X-750 caused significant strengthening and ductility loss associated with formation of cavities and… more

Cargo response to railcar impact and tiedown load analysis

Description: An analytical study of the loads produced during coupling of railcars carrying heavy shipping containers is presented. The structural model of the impact event is represented by a lumped-parameter technique. Each discrete mass lump possesses longitudinal, vertical, and rotational degrees of freedom. The resulting computer simulation provides for nonlinear railcar coupler stiffness and linear damping forces in the coupler and container tiedowns. Results include response to parametric variations … more

Metallurgical examination of gun barrel screws

Description: The examination was conducted to determine the extent of degradation that had occurred after a series of firings; these screws prevent live rounds of ammunition from being loaded into the firing chamber. One concern is that if the screw tip fails and a live round is accidentally loaded into the chamber, a live round could be fired. Another concern is that if the blunt end of the screw begins to degrade by cracking, pieces could become small projectiles during firing. All screws used in firing 1… more

Stress Corrosion Crack Detection on HU-25 Guardian Aircraft

Description: Several ultrasonic inspection methods were developed at the Federal Aviation Administration's Airworthiness Assurance NDI Validation Center (AANC) to easily and rapidly detect hidden stress corrosion cracks in all vertical windshield posts on the US Coast Guard (USCG) HU-25 Guardian aircraft. The inspection procedure locates cracks as small as 2.0 millimeters emanating from internal fastener holes and determines their length. A test procedure was developed and a baseline assessment of the USCG … more

DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF THE BLANTON CLAMSHELL CLOSUREFOR USE ON RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL PACKAGING DRUMS

Description: This paper provides a brief history of the U.S. Type B 6M specification container, its introduction into U.S. Code of federal regulations and its scheduled elimination three decades later. The paper also presents development, testing and deployment by the Department of Energy (DOE) of an enhanced drum closure called the 'Blanton Clamshell' (patent pending) that was designed to replace the standard open-head C-ring closure for the 55- and 85-gallon drums described in the 6M specification to exte… more

Engineering Task Plan for the Development of Footclamp

Description: The Rotary Mode Core Sampling Trucks (RMCSTs) currently use a footclamp that utilizes a wedge design to secure the drill string. On June 18, 1998, a problem occurred while core sampling operations were being conducted. Approximately 28 ft. of drill string was inadvertently dropped into tank 241-SX-102. The root cause of this occurrence was determined to be inadequate or defective design of the footclamp being used. The footclamp in use during this occurrence relied on a wedge-type design that g… more

Special remote tooling developed and utilized to tighten TFTR TF coil casing bolts

Description: Special tooling has been developed and used to tighten toroidal field (TF) coil casing bolts that have loosened from years of Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) operation. Due to their location, many of the TF casing bolts cannot be directly accessed or viewed; their condition was first discovered during unrelated inspections in 1988. Engineering solutions were, sought until 1992, when a remotely operated wrench concept was successfully demonstrated on a TF coil mockup. The concept was develope… more

Final report on PCRV thermal cylinder axial tendon failures

Description: The post-test examination of the failed tendons from the PCRV thermal cylinder experiment has been concluded. Failures in the wires are attributed to stress-corrosion cracking. The cause of tendon failures has not been unequivocably established, but they may have been due to nitrates in the duct. The wires employed in the manufacture of the tendons will crack in less than 72 hr in a 0.2 M solution of ammonium nitrate at 70$sup 0$C. The quality of the wires is poor, and surface cracks were detec… more

Regulatory analysis for the resolution of Generic Safety Issue 29: Bolting degradation or failure in nuclear power plants

Description: Generic Safety Issue (GSI)-29 deals with staff concerns about public risk due to degradation or failure of safety-related bolting in nuclear power plants. The issue was initiated in November 1982. Value-impact studies of a mandatory program on safety-related bolting for operating plants were inconclusive: therefore, additional regulatory requirements for operating plants could not be justified in accordance with provisions of 10 CFR 50.109. In addition, based on operating experience with boltin… more
