Analysis of NSTX Upgrade OH Magnet and Center Stack

Description: The new ohmic heating (OH) coil and center stack for the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) upgrade are required to meet cooling and structural requirements for operation at the enhanced 1 Tesla toroidal field and 2 MA plasma current. The OH coil is designed to be cooled in the time between discharges by water flowing in the center of the coil conductor. We performed resistive heating and thermal hydraulic analyses to optimize coolant channel size to keep the coil temperature below 100 … more

Multiplicity distributions in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV: a comparison with hadronic data

Description: The charged particle multiplicity distributions for single jets in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV have been measured using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. The shape of the distribution agrees well with a Poisson distribution. No correlation is observed between the multiplicities in the two jets of an event. For fixed values of the prong number of the total event, the multiplicity sharing between the two jets is in good agreement with a binomial distribution. These observations… more

Production of eta mesons in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at. sqrt. s = 29 GeV

Description: Data from e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at 29 GeV have been used to measure the production and fragmentation of eta mesons. The signal is observed in the eta ..-->.. ..gamma gamma.. decay channel. The fragmentation function for p/sub eta/ > 1.5 GeV/c agrees well with the shapes predicted by both the Lund and Webber models. However, the mean multiplicity is measured to be < n/sub eta/ > = 0.37 +- 0.08 eta mesons per hadronic annihilation event, which is significantly lower than the values predi… more

Study of intermittency in e sup + e sup minus annihilations at 29 GeV

Description: Charged particle multiplicity distributions from e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} annihilations at 29 GeV have been analyzed in selected rapidity and azimuthal angle intervals. The data were taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. The factorial moments of the multiplicity distributions increase as the rapidity interval is decreased, the so-called intermittency phenomenon. These direct measurements of the moments agree with values derived from negative binomial fits to our multiplicity distrib… more

Measurement of nu/sub e/ and anti nu/sub e/ elastic scattering as a test of the standard model

Description: Various tests of standard SU(2) x U(1) model of weak interactions which can be performed by measurements of electron and muon neutrino-electron elastic scattering are reviewed. Electron neutrino-electron elastic scattering has both a neutral current part as well as a charged current part, and therefore offers a unique place to measure the interference of these two amplitudes. A measurement of the y-dependence of neutrino-electron elastic scattering can separately measure g/sub V/ and g/sub A/ a… more

Study of heavy quark production with the Mark II at PEP

Description: The methods adopted by the Mark II collaboration to study heavy quark production at PEP are described. Two complementary techniques are used: D* tagging using the decay chain D*/sup +/. D/sup 0/..pi../sup +/, D/sup 0/ ..-->.. K/sup -/..pi../sup +/, and inclusive lepton tagging using the characteristic p/sub T/ distributions to distinguish contributions from b and c quarks. These techniques are used to derive information about heavy quark fragmentation and about the weak coupling of heavy quarks. more

Study of quark fragmentation at 29 GeV

Description: The study of multi-particle final state in high-energy reactions has a long history. Detailed studies of hadronic interactions at Fermilab and at the CERN ISR have shown that particles are emitted in clear jets of hadrons along the beam directions. For the highest energies, a small fraction of events contains large-angle jets originating from hard collisions, in addition to the beam and target fragmentation products. The clearest observation of jets has been in high-energy e/sup +/e/sup -/ reac… more

Opportunities and requirements for experimentation at high energy e/sup +/e/sup /minus// collider

Description: Over the past fifteen years of high-energy physics, electron-positron annihilation has been the most productive of all reactions probing the fundamental interactions. The e/sup +/e/sup /minus// annihilation process is unique in offering at the same time copious production of novel particles, low backgrounds from more conventional physics, and the most efficient use of the energy which an accelerator provides. These features have allowed the detailed characterization of the charm and bottom quar… more
