Performance of the Disassembly Equipment : NYX Test No. 2.9.1, 2.9.3

Description: Abstract: "The NYX testing of the component disassembly equipment comprised repeated operation of both the quatrefoil disassembly machine and the foil press and shear to evaluate the suitability of these machines to perform their design function with reliability and convenience of operation. During testing, both design and operational deficiencies were found and corrected in the NYX equipment. In general, both machines operated satisfactorily after modification."

The Effect of Reactor Irradiation on the Stress Strain Curve of Copper

Description: The following report describes the method of a crystal of 99.99% pure copper grown under high vacuum and cut into two specimens used to test the effects of reactor irradiation on copper. Provided is a map of the results that show the difference between the unirradiated and irradiated copper samples through the process of stress strain.

Measurements of an Iron and Borated Water Shield in the Lid Tank : Experiment 10

Description: The following report measures a shield mockup in three regions: the first made almost entire of iron; the second, transition, region is made of various thicknesses of B4C; and the third region was borated water. The iron samples used in the experiments were made in the form of rectangular plates and place in the lid tank; however, the plates were not completely flat and created a water gap that was measured in this report.

Measurements of B₄C and H₂O Shield in the Lid Tank : Experiment 11

Description: The following report measures neutrons and gammas in solid B4C, as well as measuring H2O containing .5% boron by weight in the lid tank. Quantities measured in the following report in borated water are: thermal neutron distribution along the center line of the source (Z); fast neutron dose vs. Z; Gamma dose vs. Z; and neutron absorption by boron within solid B4C.

Kinematics of the Relativistic Two-Body Problem

Description: Abstract: "The kinematics of elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, and the two body reaction problem is developed in the relativistic limit and exact expressions obtained for the energies, angles, and solid-angle transformations involved. The results are specialized for zero rest mass of one or more of the particles involved. An outline for the coding of the problem on the I.B.M. Electronic Data Processing Machine, Type 701 is presented."

Progress Report: Development and Construction of Alpha-Counting Equipment

Description: Abstract: An ionization chamber for use in counting alpha particle activity from the air has been devised for counting samples collected with the electrostatic precipitator. The chamber is an adaptation of the breech-locking standard chamber, with a cylindrical high voltage electrode into which the collection foil is placed, and a coaxial rod as a collecting electrode. A geometrical efficiency of close to 50% is obtained.

Radiation Problems of the Chemical Plant

Description: "Absorption measurements have been made in a large body of water to evaluate the contribution to the radiation intensity produced by the degradation of radiation without absorption. Radiation intensities three times those expected from a simple exponential absorption were found. Scattering from the air of gamma radiation has been measured and has been found to agree satisfactorily with theoretical predictions. The penetration of radiation through curved pipes in shielding has been measured and … more

Flux Distributions and Critical k [infinity] Values for Cylindrical Reactors Simulation the MTR

Description: From summary: "In order to estimate the effect of placing bismuth and thorium layers near the MTR core, radial flux distributions and k[infinity] values were calculated for cylindrical reactors having cylindrical layers of these materials of the same height as the core and beryllium reflector and placed either next to the core or embedded in the beryllium reflector."

A Method for the Determination of Traces of Metals III : Studies of the Distillation of Amalgams

Description: Summary: "It has been demonstrated that the electrolysis-distillation stages of the procedure that has been developed for traces of metals may be utilized, with certain precautions, to recover milligram quantities of cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, nickel and zinc. Lead remains partially as undissolved lead sulfate and hence the recovery of amounts ranging from 1 - 5 mg. is not advisable by this procedure."
