First Lasing of a High-Gain Harmonic Generation Free-Electron Laser Experiment.

Description: We report on the first lasing of a high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) free-electron laser (FEL). The experiment was conducted at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). This facility is designed to study new linear acceleration techniques and new radiation sources based on linacs in combination with free electron lasers. Performance of the Brookhaven photocathode rf gun

Description: The Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) uses a photocathode rf gun to provide a high-brightness electron beam intended for FEL and laser-acceleration experiments. The rf gun consists of 1{1/2} cells driven at 2856 MHz in {pi}-mode with a maximum cathode field of 100 MV/m. To achieve long lifetimes, the photocathode development concentrates on robust metals such as copper, yttrium and samarium. Altering the Equilibrium Condition in Sr-Doped Lanthanum Manganite

Description: The material of choice for a solid oxide fuel cell cathode based on a yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte is doped lanthanum manganite, (La, Sr)MnO{sub 3}. MIT microwiggler for free electron laser applications

Description: A microwiggler-based FEL permits operation at shorter wavelengths with a reduction in the size and cost of the device. The MIT microwiggler is a pulsed ferromagnetic-core electromagnet with 70 periods of 8.8 mm each which generates an on-axis peak magnetic field of 4.2 kG. Status Report on Studies of Recovery Boiler Composite Floor Tube Cracking

Description: Cracking of the stainless steel layer of co-extruded 304L stainless steel/SA210 Gd A 1 carbon steel black liquor recovery boiler floor tubes has been identified as one of the most serious material problems in the pulp and paper industry. Quantum Monte Carlo calculation of the properties of atomic carbon and diamond

Description: A new method of calculating total energies of solids using non-local pseudopotentials in conjunction with the variational quantum Monte Carlo approach is presented. By using pseudopotentials, the large fluctuations of the energies in the core region of the atoms which occur in quantum Monte Carlo all-electron schemes are avoided. A finite element model for residual stress in repair welds

Description: This paper describes a three-dimensional finite element model for calculation of the residual stress distribution caused by repair welding. Special user subroutines were developed to simulate the continuous deposition of filler metal during welding. The visible Smith-Purcell radiation search

Description: We report here the results of an experiment at the Accelerator Test Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory to search for the production of visible radiation from the Smith-Purcell effect using a 3 MeV electron beam. After running the experiment under a variety of conditions we were unable to isolate a definite signal from Smith-Parcell effect. Any Smith-Purcell signal present in the measured radiation was less than 10% of the background signal.
