Plastic Laminate Pulsed Power Development

Description: The desire to move high-energy Pulsed Power systems from the laboratory to practical field systems requires the development of compact lightweight drivers. This paper concerns an effort to develop such a system based on a plastic laminate strip Blumlein as the final pulseshaping stage for a 600 kV, 50ns, 5-ohm driver. A lifetime and breakdown study conducted with small-area samples identified Kapton sheet impregnated with Propylene Carbonate as the best material combination of those evaluated. … more

Optimization of Beam Injection into the First Accelerating Module at TTF With Cavity Dipole Mode Signals

Description: The TESLA Test Facility (TTF) is a user facility for intense VUV-FEL light. The facility is densely equipped with diagnostics, essential in obtaining the necessary beam parameters, in particular the low emittance. However there is no dedicated component for alignment of the beam in the accelerating modules, each containing eight superconducting cavities. Large beam offsets can lead to an increase of the beam emittance. The centering of the beam in these modules is therefore important, mostly at… more

Beam Position Monitoring with Cavity Higher Order Modes in the Superconducting Linac FLASH

Description: FLASH (Free Electron Laser in Hamburg) is a user facility for a high intensity VUV-light source [1]. The radiation wavelength is tunable in the range from about 40 to 13 nm by changing the electron beam energy from 450 to 700 MeV. The accelerator is also a test facility for the European XFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser) to be built in Hamburg [2] and the project study ILC (International Linear Collider) [3]. The superconducting TESLA technology is tested at this facility, together with other acc… more

Development of the low return loss 340-size ceramic window for the APS linac.

Description: The Advanced Photon Source (APS) linac high-power switching system makes use of 340-size waveguide components. These components include vacuum-grade furnace-brazed transitions, pressurized-grade aluminum 340-size switches, and more recently 340-size ceramic windows. The fabrication of these 340-size windows proceeded with brazing of ceramic membrane to thin-walled copper sleeves and real-time network analyzer testing performed by the ASD (Accelerator Systems Division) RF (Radio Frequency) Group… more

Status of the ATF Damping Ring BPM Upgrade Project

Description: A substantial upgrade of the beam position monitors (BPM) at the ATF (Accelerator Test Facility) damping ring is currently in progress. Implementing digital read-out signal processing techniques in line with an optimized, low-noise analog downconverter, a resolution well below 1 mum could be demonstrated at 20 (of 96) upgraded BPM stations. The narrowband, high resolution BPM mode permits investigation of all types of non-linearities, imperfections and other obstacles in the machine which may l… more

Tests of the FONT3 Linear Collider Intra-Train Beam Feedback System at the ATF

Description: We report preliminary results of beam tests of the FONT3 Linear Collider intra-train position feedback system prototype at the Accelerator Test Facility at KEK. The feedback system incorporates a novel beam position monitor (BPM) processor with a latency below 5 nanoseconds, and a kicker driver amplifier with similar low latency. The 56 nanosecond-long bunchtrain in the ATF extraction line was used to test the prototype BPM processor. The achieved latency will allow a demonstration of intra-tra… more

Measurements of Intra-Beam Scattering at Low Emittance in the Advanced Light Source

Description: The beam emittance at the interaction point of linear colliders is expected to be strongly influenced by the emittance of the beams extracted from the damping rings. Intra-beam scattering (IBS) potentially limits the minimum emittance of low-energy storage rings, and this effect strongly influences the choice of energy of damping rings [1]. Theoretical analysis suggests that the NLC damping rings will experience modest emittance growth at 1.98 GeV, however there is little experimental data of I… more

New DIII-D tokamak plasma control system

Description: A state-of-the-art plasma control system has been constructed for use on the DIII-D tokamak to provide high speed real time data acquisition and feedback control of DIII-D plasma parameters. This new system has increased the precision to which discharge shape and position parameters can be maintained and has provided the means to rapidly change from one plasma configuration to another. The capability to control the plasma total energy and the ICRF antenna loading resistance has been demonstrate… more

Development of a raster electronics system for expanding the APT proton beam

Description: A 1700 MeV, 100 mA proton linear accelerator is being designed for Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT). A beam expansion system is required to uniformly irradiate a 19 x 190 cm tritium production target. This paper describes a beam expansion system consisting of eight ferrite dipole magnets to raster the beam in the x- and y-planes and also describes the salient features of the design of the electronics that are unique to the expander. Eight Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT)-based mo… more

The technical viability of alternative blowing agents in polyisocyanurate roof insulation

Description: This paper presents a progress report on field thermal performance measurements on a set of private industry-produced, experimental polyisocyanurate laminate board stock foams blown with CFC-11, HCFC-123, HCFC-141b, 50/50, and 65/35 blends of HCFC-123/HCFC-141b. These boards have been observed for almost 300 days of roof field exposure in East Tennessee. The field data are used to derive an empirical model which can be used to predict effective diffusion coefficients for the air components into… more

The Effects of Nitrogen on the Interface State Density Near the Conduction Band Edge in 4H and 6H-SiC

Description: Results are reported for the passivation of interface states near the conduction band edge in SiO{sub 2}/SiC MOS capacitors using post-oxidation anneals in nitric oxide, ammonia and forming gas (N{sub 2}5%H{sub 2}). Anneals in nitric oxide and ammonia reduce the interface state density significantly for 4H-SiC, while forming gas anneals are largely ineffective. Results suggest that interface states in SiO{sub 2}/SiC and SiO{sub 2}/SiC have different origins, and a model is described for interfa… more
