Assessment of the risk of transporting spent nuclear fuel by truck

Description: The assessment includes the risks from release of spent fuel materials and radioactive cask cavity cooling water due to transportation accidents. The contribution to the risk of package misclosure and degradation during normal transport was also considered. The results of the risk assessment have been related to a time in the mid-1980's, when it is projected that nuclear plants with an electrical generating capacity of 100 GW will be operating in the U.S. For shipments from reactors to interim … more

APORT: a program for the area-based apportionment of county variables to cells of a polar grid. [Airborne pollutant transport models]

Description: The APORT computer code was developed to apportion variables tabulated for polygon-structured civil districts onto cells of a polar grid. The apportionment is based on fractional overlap between the polygon and the grid cells. Centering the origin of the polar system at a pollutant source site yields results that are very useful for assessing and interpreting the effects of airborne pollutant dissemination. The APOPLT graphics code, which uses the same data set as APORT, provides a convenient v… more

Shallow land burial of low-level radioactive wastes. A selected, annotated bibliography

Description: The data file was built to provide information support to DOE researchers in the field of low-level radioactive waste disposal and management. The scope of the data base emphasizes studies which deal with the ''old'' Manhattan sites, commercial disposal sites, and the specific parameters which affect the soil and geologic migration of radionuclides. Specialized data fields have been incorporated into the data base to improve the ease and accuracy of locating pertinent references. Specific radio… more

Hanford Nuclear Energy Center: a conceptual study

Description: The objective of the study is to develop an improved understanding of the nuclear energy center (NEC) concept and to identify research and development needed to evaluate the concept fully. A specific context was selected for the study--the Hanford site. Thus, the study primarily addresses the HNEC concept, but the findings are extrapolated to generic NECs where possible. The major emphasis in the HNEC study was to explore potential technical and environmental problems in a specific context and … more

Safety Analysis Report for Packaging (SARP) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Foamglas Shipping Container

Description: An analytical evaluation of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Foamglas Shipping Container was made to demonstrate its compliance with the regulations governing offsite radioactive material shipping packages. The evaluation encompassed five primary categories: structural integrity, thermal resistance, radiation shielding, nuclear criticality safety, and quality assurance. The results of the evaluation show that the container complies with the applicable regulations.

Nonproliferation Alternative Systems Assessment Program (NASAP): preliminary environmental assessment of thorium/uranium fuel cycle systems

Description: This report presents a preliminary assessment of the quality of existing information available for the evaluation of potential environmental impacts resulting from large-scale implementation of a thorium-based fuel cycle. The report's purpose includes (1) assistance in the development of a hazard assessment policy for the Nonproliferation Alternative Systems Assessments Program (NASAP) sponsored by the Department of Energy, and (2) identification of areas in which further research is necessary … more

1975 energy conditions in the South

Description: This report depicts energy supply and demand conditions in the South in 1975 and highlights differences in production and utilization patterns relative to the United States (some of the consumption data is for 1974). Significant changes during the previous three years are noted to provide continuity with the predecessor report, Energy Conditions in the South: 1972. The most important changes are the substantial increase in nuclear generation of electricity, the absolute and relative decline in … more

Testimony presented to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's public hearing on environment and conservation in nonnuclear energy research and development, March 31, 1978, Washington, D. C

Description: The author cites Public Law 92-577, The Nonnuclear Energy Research and Development Act of 1974, as mandating this Public Hearing as a forum to review the adequacy of emphasis on energy conservation and environmental implications of the Federal energy R, D and D program. President Carter directed ERDA (now DOE) and EPA in May 1977 to jointly develop procedures for establishing environmental protection standards for all new energy technologies and asked that the procedures be agreed upon within o… more

Assessment of the risk of transporting gasoline by truck

Description: Based on shipping assumptions and the current accident rate of 2.5 x 10/sup -6/ per mile, it is estimated that gasoline tank trucks will be involved in 1,781 accidents in 1980, and that 110 of the accidents (about one in 15) will result in a release of 3,000 gallons of gasoline or more from the tank truck. About one in four of the releases are expected to result in a large fire. The estimated number of fatalities from the gasoline releases in 1980 is 29, with 12 of these fatalities being driver… more
