A Review of Supercritical Fluid Extraction

Description: Forward: The purpose of this report is to summarize the results obtained from a brief investigation of supercritical fluid extraction principles and applications. This study was one portion of a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy, contract nuriber DE-AI01076PR06010, in response to a preliminary proposal submitted by the authors. This report sometimes uses company trade naries to identify processes and patent holders. This usage implies no endorsement by HBS. Note also that some figures reproduced from other sources do not conform with NBS policy concerning SI units.

On the Statistical Theory of Electromagnetic Waves in a Fluctuating Medium (II): Mathematical Basis of the Analogies to Quantum Field Theory

Description: Report discussing the relationship between quantum field theory and the the statistical theory of waves. Basic equations exist in the latter theory which correspond closely to the fundamental equations of the former theory; i.e., to the commutation relations and the Heisenberg equation of motion. A probability density function of waves is introduced here which corresponds to the probability amplitude function in quantum mechanics. The theory of the statistical Green's functions and their relationships to the expectation values of the physical variables is also extensively developed. It is found that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the formalism of Green's functions presented here and that used in field theory.

Compiled Thermodynamic Data Sources for Aqueous and Biochemical Systems: an Annotated Bibliography (1930-1983)

Description: Abstract: This is a selected and annotated bibliography of sources of compiled and evaluated chemical thermodynamic data relevant to biochemical and aqueous systems. The principal thermodynamic properties considered herein are Gibbs energy and equilibrium data, enthalpies of formation and reaction, heat capacities and entropies, and the corresponding partial molar and excess properties. Derived quantities used in calculating the above are also included. Transport and mechanical data have also been identified to a lesser degree. Included in the annotations to the data sources are brief descriptions of the types of properties tabulated, the classes of materials dealt with, and the degree of completeness of the compilations.

NBS Viscometer Calibrating Liquids and Capillary Tube Viscometers

Description: Report discussing measurements of viscosity made with relative viscometers. These instruments must be calibrated with liquids whose viscosities are known. NBS provides a series of 10 oils for this purpose. Their viscosities range from 0.02 to 450 poises and their temperature coefficients of viscosity range from 2.1 to 9.4 percent per degree C. The less viscous oils are more stable. Correction formulas for errors or conditions are presented.

Telecommunication Technologies, Networking and Libraries

Description: Abstract: The conference provided an overview of current and developing technologies for digital transmission of image data that are likely to have an impact on the operations of libraries and information centers or provide support for information networking. Technologies reviewed include slow-scan television, teleconferencing, and videodisc. Other papers discuss technology and standards development for computer network interconnection through hardware and software, particularly packet-switched networks; computer network protocols for library and information service applications; the structure of a national bibliographic telecommunications network; and the major policy issues involved in the regulation or deregulation of the common communications carriers industry.

Nomograms for Obtaining the Compound Composition of Hydrated Limes from the Oxide Analysis

Description: Report with two nomograms presented for rapidly obtaining the compound composition of hydrated limes from the oxide analysis. The general nomogram can be applied to any commercial hydrated lime and gives values accurate to within 0.3 percent while the special nomogram is applicable only to regularly hydrated and highly hydrated dolomitic limes and is accurate to within 0.1 percent.

The Solar Spectrum 2935 Å to 8770 Å : Second Revision of Rowland's Preliminary Table of Solar Spectrum Wavelengths

Description: From Abstract: "An introductory text gives a detailed description of each column of the solar ledger. Tables include counts of lines of each spectrum recorded in the identification column, leading lines in the first and second spectra, and summaries of molecules and elements present in the sun. Low Temperature Mechanical Properties Of Copper and Selected Copper Alloys: A Compilation From the Literature

Description: From Abstract: "In the past 60 years considerable data have been accumulated concerning the mechanical properties of copper and its alloys. It was felt that there was great need to adequately document these results in one publication. Therefore a unique type of compilation is presented. The compilation is divided into four parts. The first section is intended for quick reference use for those who are interested in average values. The second section includes data from most of the investigators who have published results on the mechanical properties of copper and its alloys. The third section is composed of tables classifying the investigations which were not in section two. The fourth section section lists, in alphabetical order, all references used."

Towards a Tribology Information System

Description: Abstract: A workshop was held in July 985 to address the needs for a computerized tribology information and data system, as well as possible implementation schemes. The meeting was sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Research Committee on Tribology, the Department of Energy, Energy Conservation and Utililation Technology Division, and the National Bureau of Standards. The views of a broad sector of industry, academia, and government were obtained over a four-week period through participation by about 60 individuals. Specific categories that were treated were design, numeric data, bibliography, research in progress, newsletter, and product directory. The principal discussion content and the recommendations in each subject category are summarized here. There was general agreement that a system of this type would be broadly useful to the engineering community for the purpose of design and materials selection, and for the research community as an important aid in information access and flow. The workshop recommendations detailed four phases of development, starting with a demonstration prototype system and concluding with a full-scale operating data and information base. Specific plans in each phase and for each subject area were developed and are presented here. While continual input will be sought from the technical community to refine those plans, it is hoped that immediate efforts can begin in at least some of the areas, and that system use will quickly develop to a significant level, both nationally and internationally.
