Reactions of Preoxidized Beryllium Powder in Moist Carbon Dioxide

Description: Breakaway corrosion of Be in moist CO2 can be avoided if the Be is fabricated using preoxidized powder. The powder is preoxidized by heating in dry O/sub 2/. Preoxidation of Be powder was measured as a function of temperature and time of heating in O/sub 2/. The subsequent reactions of the preoxidized powder in moist CO/sub 2/ at 700 deg C were studied and the effect of increasing amounts of added oxide was measured. A model is proposed to explain the inhibition of corrosion by added oxide. (au… more

Pressure-Flow Relationships in the Isolated Cerebral Circulation of the Dog

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the pressure-flow relationships in the isolated canine cerebral vascular bed. These relationships in vessels which supply an organ surrounded by bone are theoretically influenced by limiting factors which are not present in those vessels surrounded by soft tissue. An evaluation of the extent of these limitations is essential to thorough understanding of the dynamics of the cerebral vascular bed.

STUDY OF RESONANCES IN THE Σ-π SYSTEM

Description: In order to study resonances in the {Sigma}-{pi} system, we have analyzed reactions in which a {Sigma} hyperon and two or three pions are produced in K{sup -}-p interactions at 1.22 {+-} 0.040 and 1.51 {+-} 0.050 GeV/c incident K{sup -} momentum (i. e., 1895 and 2025 MeV center-of-mass energy), using the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory's 72-in. hydrogen bubble chamber.

A Study of the Low-Back Vowels and of Certain Diphthongs in the Speech of Selected Groups in Denton, Texas

Description: American dialect studies have progressed rapidly within the last thirty years, but the progress seems to be concentrated within the Southern and New England areas of the United States. Though there have been studies made in other areas, they are sporadic, no work of any significance having yet been published. Texas, unfortunately, is one area of rich dialectal significance which has been neglected, with the exception of Oma Stanley's work on the dialect in East Texas. Even though that work is s… more

ELECTROLYTIC DISSOLUTION OF NUCLEAR FUELS. PART III. STAINLESS STEEL (304) IN NITRATE SOLUTIONS

Description: The potential-current density relationships for 304 stainless steel dissolution in a nitrate system were studied as a function of solution composition and temperature in order to optimize the conditions for electrolytic dissolution of ihis material. In the nitrate system, the anodic dissolution of steel takes place in the transpassive region. Under some conditions, deviations from Tafel behavior are observed which depend greatly on the nitrate and hydrogen ion concentration, and on temperature.… more

Process Improvement Transition Authorization IP-20-I: Increased graphite temperature limits and use of nitrogen in the K reactors

Description: The objectives of this Process Improvement Transition Authorization (PITA) for KE and KW reactors are to authorize a flat 700 C graphite temperature limit in the bulk of the graphite, with a conditional 850 C limit in the 0.130 coring zone only, and in conjunction therewith to provide for routine use of nitrogen instead of carbon dioxide in the reactor atmosphere. These temperatures as quoted apply to filler blocks in the vicinity of normal channels, and are maximum limits.

ECONOMIC FACTORS OF MFP THERMOELECTRIC GENERATORS. Interim Report

Description: Mixed Fission Products (MFP) for use as a heat source for thermoelectric generators will become increasingly available in the coming years. The Atomic Energy Conamission sponsored program on solidification of nuclear wastes is now entering the hot-bench scale test phase. During this phase approximately 5000 thermal watts of two year old MFP could be produced monthly. Two different types of hot calcination pilot plants are planned for installation at the Hanford National Laboratories in the 1964… more

Secondary Isotope Effects in Molecular Structure

Description: A study was made to determine whether secondary iso tope effects also occur in molecular structure. Electron diffraction studies were carried out on ethane and deuteroethane. In C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ the mean C-C and C-H bond lengths found agreed very closely with values determined for other paraffin hydrocarbons, and the C--H bond showed a normal primary isotope effect (~ 0.005 A) similar to that found in methane when H is replaced by O. The output of the leastsquares analysis suggested that the me… more

THORIA AND THORIA-URANIA REINFORCED BY METAL FIBERS

Description: Thoria compacts containing refractory metal fibers in quantities as low as 5 wt% showed significantly better resistance to thermal shock spalling than thoria alone. Of the metals and alloys evaluated, molybdenum and niobium gave the best results. Values are presented for room- and elevated-temperature properties of fiber-reinforced thoria. Measured properties included compressive strength, modulus of rupture, impact strength, thermal shock resistance, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, an… more

Design of Concentric Tubular Reactor Fuel Elements for Uniform Coolant Conditions

Description: Concentric tubular reactor fuel element geometries to give equal coolant outlet temperatures are presented. Oscillations from tube to tube in thickness and temperatures generally occur but it is possible to eliminate them by choice of the centre element. This may be a fuel rod or a non-heat—producing rod with or without a surrounding annulus of fuel. The geometries and temperatures are dependent on the voidage and on a non-dimensional parameter equivalent to a Biot number based on the channel e… more

Manifest Anxiety and Orality Among Smokers and Non-Smokers

Description: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between manifest anxiety and orality as related to smokers and non-smokers as indicated on the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale and the Blaky Pitres Test (4). From the above theoretical background, the following relationships are hypothesized: Hypothesis I: Smokers will show more anxiety than nonsmokers. hypothesis 2: Female smokers will show more anxiety than male smokers. Hypothesis 3: Among the high anxiety group smokers will show more o… more

Chemical Processing Technology Quarterly Progress Report, January-March 1962

Description: The processing of Al fuel, principally of the MTR-ETR type, is reported. Processing rate averaged 90% of flow sheet values for the entire operating period, and a U recovery of 99.85% was achieved. Aqueous Zr fuel processing studles continued with the objective of adapting the HF process to continuous dissolution-complexing in order to increase the capacity of the ICPP process while using as much existing equipment as possible to minimize costs. Good results were indicated in a 190-hr run dissol… more

Development of a Fluidized Bed Calcination Process for Aluminum Nitrate Wastes in a Two-Foot-Square Pilot Plant Calciner. Part I. Equipment Development and Initial Process Studies

Description: A two-foot-square fluidized bed calciner was designed and operated to convert aqueous, highly radioactive wastes into granular solids. The calciner exceeded its designed feed capacity of calcining, at a bed temperature of 400/sup 0/C, 100 liters per hour of aluminum nitrate solution simulating wastes from the reprocessing of spent aluminum-uranium alloy reactor fuel. Heat was supplied to the calciner by circulating NaK with an electromagnetic pump, at temperatures up to 1400/sup 0/F, through a … more
