Numerical Analysis of Neutron Resonances

Description: Neutron resonances are analyzed numerically by determining the resonant energies, the total widths, and the neutron widths of the resonances. It was assumed that the total cross section can be represented by the sum of single- level Breit-Wigner formulas, with interference between resonance and potential scattering but no interference between resonances; that the Doppler broadening is represented by a Gaussian function; and that the instrument resolution is represented by a Gaussian function. Future Program for the Cern PS and the Brookhaven AGS

Description: The alternating-gradient proton synchrotrons at CERN and Brookhaven are very similar in size, design and in their experimental use. For this reason, collaboration between the groups at CERN and Brookhaven has been close throughout the history of these two machines. For the most part this has taken the form of exchanges of visits of individual machine designers and of high-energy physicists. By 1962, however, it appeared that the reciprocal flow of information was not adequate and a more formal … more

Supporting Analysis for Thermal Suitability of Fuel Elements for SM-1A Core I Loading

Description: A recommended SM-1A Core I loading chart was derived from available, metallurgically acceptable elements at the SM-1A and SM-1 sites. The derivation was based on local thermal and hydraulic considerations of minimum elementto- element coolant channel clearances. These clearances were determined from field inspection measurements of outer fuel plate spacing, as modified by analytical calculations of plate ripple growth during exposure to reactor operating thermal stresses. Evaluation of lithium as a control rod poison

Description: To permit more accurate evaluation of the incentives for isotopes producing control rods a determination was performed of the tritium production which would result from conversion to lithium HCR`s. A cursory examination of the gains resulting from the use of lithium shows that a significant amount of tritium could be produced in this manner totaling 1.6 percent of the present Pu-239 production on an atom equivalent basis.

THE EFFECT OF RADIATION AND NITRIC ACID-NITRATE SALT SOLUTION ON SOME NON- METALLIC MATERIALS

Description: Several plastic materials and one ceramic alumina were tested for possible use as electrical insulators and spacers in an electrolytic dissolver for processing irradiated nuclear fuels. They were first screened for chemical resistance to the boiling dissolver product solution composed of 1 M nitric acid and 75 g/l stainless steel metal components as nitrates. Those that were resistant were then exposed simultaneously to the boiling dissolver product solution and a gamma irradiation field. Value… more

Equations for Bilateral Heat Transfer to Fluids Flowing in Concentric Annuli

Description: Abstract: "Theoretical equations have been derived for calculating heat transfer coefficients for fluids flowing through concentric annuli for the following two cases: (A) constant and equal heat fluxes from both walls, and (B) constant, but unequal, heat fluxes from the walls, with equal wall temperatures at a given axial position along annular channel. In the derivations, the conditions of fully-established flow, and independence of physical properties with temperature variation across the fl… more

PROTON RECOIL ENERGY LOSS DISTRIBUTION IN PLANE GEOMETRY

Description: Computations of proton recoil energy losses from neutron irradiation of hydrogenous systems possessing plane symmetry were made for the purpose of fast neutron counter design. A digital computer code was written to carry out the calculations for two irradiation geometries: the neutron beam is assumed to be normally incident upon the system, and the system is exposed to an isotropic flux of neutrons. Numerical results are presented for neutrons of various energies incident on plane radiators of … more

A Bench-Scale Natural-Recirculation Dissolver

Description: A natural-recirculation dissolver closely approaching a stirred-tank reactor in behavior was developed, and its feasibility was demonstrated in the mercury-catalyzed dissolution of aluminum in nitric acid, It was designed to utilize the heat of reaction and evolution of gaseous reaction products for recirculation and mixing. The dissolvent was 5-molar nitric acid, containing mercury in concentrations from 10/sup -4/ to 10/sup -3/ molar as a catalyst. Dissolution rates for 1/7 scale, simulated M… more

Cation Exchange in Acetone-Water-Hydrochloric Acid

Description: Abstract: Distribution coefficients have been measured for the partition of metal ions between cation exchange resin and acetone-water-hydrochloric acid solutions. the differences in distribution coefficients of metal ions are greater in acetone-water media than in aqueous media of the same hydrochloric acid concentration. Using distribution coefficient data, conditions for column separations of mixtures can be selected. Column separations of metal ion mixtures can be effected by eluting wit… more

Fuel Cycle Program. A Boiling Water Reactor Research and Development Program. Eighth Quarterly Progress Report, April-June 1962

Description: A frequency analysis was made of the VBWR stability test data. Interpretation of the steady-state noise observed in the stability tests involved consideration of several possible sources of excitation. One of these, a theory of water surface waves, is summarized. Visual and destructive examinations were made of selected fuel rods. Fretting corrosion of the Zircaloy-clad fuel rods against stainless steel spacers was observed. Evidence that UO/sub 2/ thermal conductivity increases with time was o… more

INVESTIGATION OF THERMALSTRESS-FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF STAINLESS STEEL. THE EFFECTS OF GAGE LENGTH AND SPECIMEN CONFIGURATION ON THERMAL-STRESS-FATIGUE TEST RESULTS

Description: The importance of the experimental method to thermalstress-fatigue test results is clarified. It is shown that a significant increase in apparent fatigue life can be obtained by measuring maximum strain per cycle instead of an average strain. Extrapoiation curves are given to convert the litter into the formed. A varying-cross-section specimen of zero'' gage length is shown to allow measurement of true, maximum strain. (auth)
