Estimate of Hazard Produced by Accidental Release of Gaseous Fission Products from an ORR Fused Salt Capsule Experiment

Description: An accidental release of gaseous fission products from an ORR fused salt capsule, containing 26 mg. of U/sup 235/, was postulated and the resuiting hazard estimated by calculating the maximum external and internal dose an individual could receive from exposure to the gaseous fission products and their decay products. Assuming all the contained gaseous fission produets are released, the resulting external and internal dosc, to organs other than the thyroid, arc insignificant. The dose to the thy… more

Relative Biological Hazards of Radiations Expected in Homogeneous Reactors TBR and HPR

Description: An evaluation of the relative health hazards of radioisotopes produced in nuclear reactors is reported. The most important hazards were indicated to be I131, the Sr90 - Y90 chain, the Ce144 -Pr144 chain, Sr 89, the Ba140-La40 chain, Y91, the Zr95-Nb95 chain, Pr143, La140 , and Pa233. The most critical body organs affected by air-borne contamination are the thyroid gland, the bone marrow, the lungs, and the gastrointestinal tract. Where possible, continuous daily removal of gaseous and solid fis… more

A Comparative Study of Hanford and Utah Range Sheep

Description: Observations on sheep representing flocks in Utah adjacent to the Nevada Proving Ground were compared with findings made on experimental sheep exposed to various amounts of radioiodine. The Utah sheep showed no evidence of the radiation damage observed in experimentally treated sheep. Estimations of amounts of radioiodine on vegetation required to cause serious thyroid damage following a contamination event are included.

Proceedings of the Conference on Radioiodine Sponsored by the Argonne Cancer Research Hospital, United States Atomic Energy Commission, and the Clinics of the University of Chicago, November 5 and 6, 1956, Chicago, Illinois

Description: Applications of the various iodine isotopes in diagnosis and therapy are discussed. Problems of dosimetry and radiation exposure to patients and hospital personnel are considered. Some quantitative aspects of radiation damage in mammals relevant to the clinical use of radioiodine are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on applications of iodine-131 in diagnosis and therapy of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism; in the treatmeat of thyroid carcinoma; and in thyroid ablation for cardiac disease. 54 refe… more
