Radiation Hazards from Recycled Reactor Fuel

Description: The radiation hazards associated with recycled nuclear reactor fuels will greatly complicate the handling and refabrication of these fuels. This problem is most serious with U-233 and plutonium fuels where the presence of U-232 and the heavier isotopes of plutonium contribute energetic alpha, gamma, and neutron radiations at levels many times that from isotopically pure U-233 and Pu-239. This report summarizes present knowledge of the radiation hazards associated with recycled fuel and the addi… more

Trip Rerport Organic Reactor Collant Survey

Description: A preliminary report has shown the potential importance of organic reactor coolants to Hanford technology. The salient points are complete avoidance of corrosion problems and accomplishment of DPR performance with low pressure technique. The recommendation of the report that loop tests be made at Hanford is to be acted upon by Recirculation Technology Unit as soon as organic coolant material is received. To insure starting this experimental work fully abreast of the information available, a tri… more

A study of injection processes for liquid oxygen and gaseous hydrogen in a 200-pound-thrust rocket engine

Description: Characteristic velocities of six single-element injectors that separately varied propellant spreading and mixing were measured over a range of oxidant-fuel weight ratios of 2 to 7. Hydrogen inlet temperature was -320 degrees F. Injectors that both mixed and spread the propellants had the highest characteristic-velocity efficiency. Spreading of either propellant produced about the same increment efficiency. The increase in efficiency due to mixing was relatively small. With similar injectors, ox… more

An Analysis of the Effects of Wing Aspect Ratio and Tail Location on Static Longitudinal Stability Below the Mach Number of Lift Divergence

Description: "An analysis is presented of the influence of wing aspect ratio and tail location on the effects of compressibility upon static longitudinal stability. The investigation showed that the use of reduced wing aspect ratios or short tail lengths leads to serious reductions in high-speed stability and the possibility of high-speed instability" (p. 1).

The investigation also included the effects of adding a partial-span, leading-edge chord extension to the outer portions of the wing. Results regarding the effect of tail height, wing-wake and local downwash measurements, and ef… more

Study of effects of sweep on the flutter of cantilever wings

Description: An experimental and analytical investigation of the flutter of sweptback cantilever wings is reported. The experiments employed groups of wings swept back by rotating and by shearing. The angle of sweep range from 0 degree to 60 degrees and Mach numbers extended to approximately 0.85. A theoretical analysis of the air forces on an oscillating swept wing of high length-chord ratio is developed, and the approximations inherent in the assumptions are discussed. Comparison with experiment indicates… more

Electroplates on Thorium

Description: Abstract: "The protection of thorium in hot water was studied. Copper electrocladding on thorium offers promising protection against hot water. The corrosion of thorium in 95 C water was reduced appreciably by a thorium phosphate film. The results of this abbreviated investigation offer a basis for the development of a method of protecting thorium at elevated temperatures in corrosive media."

Theoretical Investigation of Laminar Heat Transfer on Yawed Infinite Cylinders in Supersonic Flow and a Comparison With Experimental Data

Description: Report presenting a theoretical method for calculating heat transfer in the laminar boundary layer on yawed infinite cylinders in compressible flow. The method can be applied to a cylinder of arbitrary cross section and arbitrary chordwise wall-temperature distribution. The variation in local heat transfer around the surface of the cylinder was found to have little functional dependence on yaw angle or wall temperature.

Influence of Fluorine Substitution on the Properties of Metal Chelate Compounds

Description: From introduction: "This is the first of three articles dealing with the influence of fluorine substitution in the ligand on the properties of metal chelate compounds. Although the primary purpose of this project was to study the influence of fluorine substitution on the properties -- particularly light absorption -- of uranyl compounds, copper chelates were chosen for preliminary study as model substances, because they are easily prepared."

Altitude cooling investigation of the R-2800-21 engine in the P-47g airplane 3: individual-cylinder temperature reduction by means of intake-pipe throttle and by coolant injection

Description: "Flight tests were conducted on a R-2800-21 engine in the P-47G airplane to determine the effect on the wall temperatures of cylinder 10 of throttling the charge in the intake pipe and of injecting a water-ethanol coolant into the intake pipe. Cylinder 10 was chosen for this investigation because it runs abnormally hot (head temperatures of the order of 45 F higher than those of the next hottest cylinder) at the medium and high-power conditions. Tests with interchanged cylinders showed that the… more

Gamma Rays from the Interaction of 14-Mev Neutrons with Beryllium

Description: Abstract: "The cross section for the Be-9(n, t')Li-7*-->Li-7 + Y(0.477 Mev) reaction has been measured in the vicinity of 14 Mev by detecting the gamma-rays at scattering angles from 30 to 150 degrees. A time-of-flight technique was used to distinguish the gamma-rays from the high neutron background. The cross section drops from 20 mb at 13.6 Mev to 10 mb at 14.1 Mev and then rises to 30 mb at 14.7 Mev."
