Progress in studies of Electron-Cloud-Induced Optics Distortions at CESRTA

Description: The Cornell Electron Storage Ring Test Accelerator (CesrTA) program has included extensive measurements of coherent betatron tune shifts for a variety of electron and positron beam energies, bunch population levels, and bunch train configurations. The tune shifts have been shown to result primarily from the interaction of the beam with the space-charge field of the beam-induced lowenergy electron cloud in the vacuum chamber. Comparison to several advanced electron cloud simulation program packa… more

Size-dependent structure of silver nanoparticles under high pressure

Description: Silver noble metal nanoparticles that are<10 nm often possess multiply twinned grains allowing them to adopt shapes and atomic structures not observed in bulk materials. The properties exhibited by particles with multiply twinned polycrystalline structures are often far different from those of single-crystalline particles and from the bulk. I will present experimental evidence that silver nanoparticles<10 nm undergo a reversible structural transformation under hydrostatic pressures up to … more

The Crystal and Molecular Structure of 2, 2' bipyridylglycinatochloro Copper (II) Dihydrate

Description: The three-dimensional x-ray structure of 2,2'-bipyridylglycinatochloro copper(II) dihydrate has been fully refined to a final R factor of 0.081. The bipyridyl and glycine ligands are arranged about the central copper atom in a square planar configuration while the chlorine atom is 2.635 angstroms above this plane directly over the copper atom. This unusually long distance is explained by the positioning of a glycine group on the opposite side of the square plane, resulting in a distorted octahe… more

[Detroit Bank and Trust Company Building (1)]

Description: Photograph of the Detroit Bank and Trust Company building, taken in such a manner as to distort the building's shape and make its top appear larger than the bottom. In this image, the building itself is placed between other, smaller buildings, and cars are driving past it. Photo by: Joe Clark, HBSS. Signed by: Joe Clark, HBSS

Effect of inlet flow distortion on compressor stall and acceleration characteristics of a J65-B-3 turbojet engine

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of inlet flow distortion on the compressor stall and engine acceleration characteristics of a J65-B-3 turbojet engine. A sinusoidal circumferential distortion and two abrupt radial tip flow distortions were introduced at the engine inlet at several altitudes and Mach number 0.8. Results regarding the definition of inlet flow distortions, acceleration limits, compressor pressure ratio at stall, fuel flow for stall, and maximum accelerat… more

Factors affecting flow distortions produced by supersonic inlets

Description: Report presenting the typical effects of flow distortions on turbojet-engine performance and how flow distortions can be reduced by reducing the distortion entering the inlet diffuser and by improving the amount of mixing that generally occurs in the subsonic diffuser. Sources of distortion in the supersonic inlet are described and steps are suggested that might be taken to reduce their effects.

Preliminary investigation of the effects of altitude and inlet-pressure distortions on steady-state and surge fuel flow of the J57-P-1 turbojet engine

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of altitude and inlet-pressure distortions on the steady-state and surge characteristics of the J57-P-1 two-spool turbojet engine in the altitude wind tunnel. Steady-state performance and surge fuel flows were obtained with a uniform inlet distribution at a range of altitudes at flight Mach number 0.8.

Factors Controlling Air-Inlet Flow Distortions

Description: Memorandum presenting a study of several typical air induction systems for modern aircraft, which indicates that flow distortions of about-pipe-flow magnitudes can be expected at near-optimum inlet-engine matched air-flow conditions and at small angles of attacks. The distortions may be seriously increased by operation at large angles of attack or yaw, or by supercritical operation of the inlets. Boundary-layer bleed, duct overexpansion and contraction, and freely rotating fans appear promising… more

Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Circumferential Inlet Flow Distortion on the Performance of a Five-Stage Axial-Flow Research Compressor with Transonic Rotors in All Stages

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the performance of a five-stage transonic research compressor with distorted inlet flow. Both overall performance and individual blade-row performance results over a range of compressor speeds and equivalent weight flows were obtained with three circumferential inlet flow-distortion patterns covering annular extents of 60, 120, and 180 degrees. Results regarding compressor-inlet conditions and overall performance and individual blade-row performance are… more

Experimental Investigation of a Method of Wave-Drag Reduction for Combinations Employing Quasicylindrical Bodies and Swept Wings at Supersonic Speeds

Description: "Axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric body distortions designed by the method of NACA TN 3722 were tested to determine the amount of wave-drag reduction obtainable when applied to swept-wing-body combinations over a Mach number range of 1.39 to 1.97. Two wings of aspect ratios 1.33 and 2.67 were tested on different bodies. Both the axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric distortions produced drag reductions" (p. 1).

Total-Pressure Distortion and Recovery of Supersonic Nose Inlet With Conical Centerbody in Subsonic Icing Conditions

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of ice formation on a full-scale unheated supersonic nose inlet in the icing tunnel to determine its effect on compressor-face total-pressure distortion and recovery. Inlet angle of attack was varied from 0 to 12 degrees, free-stream Mach number from 0.17 to 0.28, and compressor-face Mach number from 0.10 to 0.47. The addition of ice to the inlet components was found to increase total-pressure-distortion levels and decreased recovery values compared with c… more
