Fluidized-Bed Calcination Studies with Stimulated ICPP Waste Solution

Description: At the present time, high-radioactivity-level wastes at Hanford are neutralized and stored as liquid in underground tanks lined with mild steel. This method of storage is relatively inexpensive and is satisfactory on a short-term basis. However, on a long term basis, liquid storage is less desirable than solid storage because of the greater mobility of the liquid. In addition, storage as aa solid would significantly reduce the volume of waste stored. Consequently, various research and developme… more

Filtering Abrasive-Wheel Uranium Cuttings

Description: Extremely radioactive particles result from the abrasive wheel cutting of irradiated fuel elements in the cut-off cell located in the 327 Building. Due to the use of water during the cutting operation these particles are in suspension and must be removed before the liquid can be discharged to the liquid waste tanks in the 340 building. The filters presently employed in the cell total activity discharged to the 340 Building tanks is attributed to the particles which pass these filters. With the … more

Silica scale technology and water conservation. [Recirculating evaporative cooling]

Description: Conservation of water at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) has been accomplished by recirculating evaporative cooling waters. Because of high silica concentration (80 mg/l) in Los Alamos groundwater, the concentration of recirculating water must be carefully controlled to prevent scaling. The most troublesome scale at Los Alamos has been identified as colloidal silica bound in a crystalline matrix of calcium carbonate. Several approaches to controlling this scale are: (1) chemical tre… more

Radiochemical analyses of soil and vegetation samples taken from the Hanford environs, 1971--1976

Description: Soil and vegetation have routinely been collected on the Hanford Site and surrounding environs as one method of monitoring radionuclide concentrations potentially attributable to Hanford operations. With the exception of a few locations, the data indicate that Hanford operations have made no significant contribution to existing radionuclide concentrations in soil and vegetation. Most of the activity seen in the samples can be attributed to natural causes or worldwide atmospheric fallout. The fe… more

Hydrology of some deep mines in Precambrian rocks

Description: A number of underground mines were investigated during the summer of 1975. All of them are in Precambrian rocks of the Lake Superior region. They represent a variety of geologic settings. The purpose of the investigations was to make a preliminary study of the dryness, or lack of dryness of these rocks at depth. In other words, to see if water was entering the deeper workings through the unmined rock by some means such as fracture or fault zones, joints or permeable zones. Water entering throug… more

Tritium effluent control project progress report, July--September 1975. [Tritiated liquid waste decontamination by molecular excitation, electrolysis of high-level tritiated water, and catalytic exchange detritiation studies]

Description: In the Tritiated Liquid Waste Decontamination (Molecular Excitation) program, it was found that a 1/4'' Nd:YAG amplifier and a Faraday rotator isolator must be added to the oscillator to obtain the required power for the laser excitation experiments. The isotopic selectivity of the two-photon dissociation process was examined in more detail. The selectivity or ratio of HTO to H/sub 2/O molecules that are photodissociated was found to be on the order of 25, which is inadequate for application to… more

Status report: A hydrologic framework for the Oak Ridge Reservation

Description: This first status report on the Hydrologic Studies Task of the Oak Ridge Reservation Hydrology and Geology Study (ORRHAGS) revises earlier concepts of subsurface hydrology and hydrogeochemistry of the ORR. A new classification of hydrogeologic units is given, as well as new interpretations of the gydrogeologic properties and processes that influence contaminant migration. The conceptual hydrologic framework introduced in this report is based primarily on reinterpretations of data acquired durin… more
