ADP and brucellosis indemnity systems development

Description: Our initial study of the USDA/TAHC Brucellosis Indemnity Program in Texas has shown that both the efficiency and rate of claim payments can be increased by the application of present day computer technologies. Two main factors contribute to these increases: the number of discrepancies that are caused by poor penmanship, transposition of numbers, and other human errors can be monitored and minimized; and the documented information can be indexed, sorted, and searched faster, more efficiently, an… more

Land rehabilitation research at Pacific Northwest Laboratories

Description: One of the major goals of rehabilitation of surface mined lands is to establish a self-sustaining vegetative cover. The cover should provide protection against wind and water erosion and provide forage for wildlife and livestock comparable to that of pre-mining conditions. Although livestock grazing has been practiced in the Western United States for more than a century there is a general paucity of information concerning the primary productivity of western rangelands. The productivity of sageb… more

Acquired immunologic tolerance in chimeras and histocompatibility factors in cattle and their relationship to those in humans. Final report. [Gamma radiation]

Description: During the course of this project we have studied 35 pairs of chimeric cattle twins. It is now clear that fractionated doses of whole-body /sup 60/Co irradiation can cause marked shifts in the proportions of the two erythrocyte populations that make up the chimeric mixture. However, it has not been possible to eliminate one of the two cell types and thus abrogate the acquired immunologic tolerance. The results of our extensive skin-grafting experiments are remarkable because they show that a ch… more
