Actuator system history of safety rod lower latch problems review of latch inspection video tapes

Description: During pre-restart testing the safety rod at position X26-YlO bound after being driven approximately two (2) feet out of the reactor. Subsequently, the rod was manually returned to it's seated position. Inspection of the lower latch showed that the latch locking plunger button (screwed on to the bottom of the plunger shaft and retained by a pin through a hole drilled through the button and the plunger shaft) was missing. The shaft failed through the hole drilled for the retaining pin. The butto… more

Toroidal plasma time evolution. Part II. Ohmic heating during start-up

Description: The toroidal plasma time evolution is being analyzed based on a multiple circuit plasma model. The inductive coupling between plasma and external coils and between various plasma subsections is taken into account. The plasma is considered in quasistatic equilibrium in the magnetic field generated by external coils. More correct transport treatment than in Part I of the present report and consideration of the neutral particles lead to realistic time evolution of the radial skin current and tempe… more

Statistical analysis of the D. C. Cook preoperational environmental monitoring program

Description: This report summarizes the major findings of an evaluation of the statistical adequacy of the preoperational environmental monitoring program for nonradioactive waste disposal at the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant. As a result of this study we found that variance components analysis methods are adequate to determine large magnitude changes in the environment. When an interaction effect between years and inner-outer factors (reference-stress) exists for the preoperation period, estimating an… more

Injection heating scenarios for TNS

Description: Neutral beam injection heating is a prime contender for heating TNS. However, injection into a full bore high density plasma during start-up will not give adequate beam penetration even with deuteron energies up to 300 keV and Z/sub eff/ < 1.5. But low density start-up may be feasible with deuteron energies of approximately 150 keV if advantage is taken of the ..cap alpha..-heating and flux surface shifts which occur when ..beta.. is increased.

Reactor operation environmental information document

Description: The Savannah River Site (SRS) produces nuclear materials, primarily plutonium and tritium, to meet the requirements of the Department of Defense. These products have been formed in nuclear reactors that were built during 1950--1955 at the SRS. K, L, and P reactors are three of five reactors that have been used in the past to produce the nuclear materials. All three of these reactors discontinued operation in 1988. Currently, intense efforts are being extended to prepare these three reactors for… more

Laser-start-up system for magnetic mirror fusion

Description: A CO/sub 2/ laser system has been developed at LLL to provide hot start-up plasmas for magnetic mirror fusion experiments. A frozen ammonia pellet is irradiated with a laser power density in excess of 10/sup 13/ W/cm/sup 2/ in a 50-ns pulse. This system uses commercially available laser systems. Optical components were fabricated both by direct machining and standard techniques. The technologies used in this system are directly applicable to reactor scale systems.

Real-time LMR control parameter generation using advanced adaptive synthesis

Description: The reactor delta T'', the difference between the average core inlet and outlet temperatures, for the liquid-sodium-cooled Experimental Breeder Reactor 2 is empirically synthesized in real time from, a multitude of examples of past reactor operation. The real-time empirical synthesis is based on reactor operation. The real-time empirical synthesis is based on system state analysis (SSA) technology embodied in software on the EBR 2 data acquisition computer. Before the real-time system is put in… more

Review of Savannah River Site K Reactor inservice inspection and testing restart program

Description: Inservice inspection (ISI) and inservice testing (IST) programs are used at commercial nuclear power plants to monitor the pressure boundary integrity and operability of components in important safety-related systems. The Department of Energy (DOE) - Office of Defense Programs (DP) operates a Category A (> 20 MW thermal) production reactor at the Savannah River Site (SRS). This report represents an evaluation of the ISI and IST practices proposed for restart of SRS K Reactor as compared, where … more

Start-up of the 100-B pile following 1569-B tube failure

Description: Tube 1569-B ruptured on September 22, 1948 and was replaced. Between the time of failure and final isolation of this tube, considerable water escaped into the graphite packing. As a result, the unit start-up and subsequent operation was quite different from that usually followed. This report has been prepared to summarize the observations and activities related to this operation.

Water treatment during C Pile start up

Description: This memorandum details the recommendation of the Technical Section that the C Pile be started up using alum treated water to which has been added sodium dichromate at a concentration of 2 ppm., and that the pile be purged at monthly intervals despite the expected absence of film formation. During the initial months of operation the necessity of adding sodium dichromate and of purging the pile should be evaluated with the hope that these factors can be eliminated from the process. The reasons f… more

Start-up simulations of the PULSAR pulsed tokamak reactor

Description: Start-up conditions are examined for a pulsed tokamak reactor that uses only inductively driven plasma current (and bootstrap current). A zero-dimensional (profile-averaged) model containing plasma power and particle balance equations is used to study several aspects of plasma start-up, including: (1) optimization of the start-up pathway; (2) tradeoffs of auxiliary start-up heating power versus start-up time; (3) volt-second consumption; (4) thermal stability of the operating point; (5) estimat… more

Hydraulic testing of modified neutron source rod in type Q septifoil

Description: A Type Q septifoil, two modified partial length control rods, four full length control rods, a source rod containing a dummy neutron source and a guide tube assembly were installed in the Long Term Flow Facility (LTFF) of the HTL. The water level inside the guide tubes over the septifoil was measured by the use of sight tubes connected to pressure taps on the guide tubes or by pressure gages. Pressures were measured at tank bottom and inside the septifoil. The target tank bottom pressure for th… more

Further code validation of Technical Specification Bases

Description: Personnel from the Applied Physics Group (APG) and from the Reactor Technology Section devised the K-14 reactor restart test program. The primary purpose of that program was to acquire data which could be used to further validate the computer codes which supported the Technical Specification Bases. The test program was highly successful and a large amount of useful data was obtained. DOE has now requested the schedule and plan for the additional code validation activities. A response to DOE was… more
