Phase detonated shock tube (PFST)

Description: The simple, cylindrically imploding and axially driven fast shock tube (FST) has been a basic component in the high velocity penetrator (HVP) program. It is a powerful device capable of delivering a directed and very high pressure output that has been successfully employed to drive hypervelocity projectiles. The FST is configured from a hollow, high-explosive (HE) cylinder, a low-density Styrofoam core, and a one-point initiator at one end. A Mach stem is formed in the core as the forward-propa… more

Transverse energy scaling and energy density estimates from sup 16 O- and sup 32 S-induced reactions

Description: We discuss the dependence of transverse energy production on projectile mass, target mass, and on the impact parameter of the heavy ion reaction. The transverse energy is shown to scale with the number of participating nucleons. Various methods to estimate the attained energy density from the observed transverse energy are discussed. It is shown that the systematics of the energy density estimates suggest averages of 2--3 GeV/fm{sup 3} rather than the much higher values attained by assuming Lan… more

Measurement of Low Level Explosives Reaction in Gauged Multi-Dimensional Steven Impact Tests

Description: The Steven Test was developed to determine relative impact sensitivity of metal encased solid high explosives and also be amenable to two-dimensional modeling. Low level reaction thresholds occur at impact velocities below those required for shock initiation. To assist in understanding this test, multi-dimensional gauge techniques utilizing carbon foil and carbon resistor gauges were used to measure pressure and event times. Carbon resistor gauges indicated late time low level reactions 200-540… more

Photographic instrumentation for the skid test. Period covered: October--December 1976

Description: Fastax camera film records were obtained on each skid test. The film records are used to: (1) provide an indication of the reaction level obtained, (2) provide an indication of whether the skid test sample (billet) impacted the target properly, (3) provide the final velocity of rotation of the billet after the impact, and (4) provide the coefficient of restitution of the billet after the impact. Items 1 and 2 provide only qualitative data. The reliability of the data obtained in items 3 and 4 i… more

High Explosive Deonation Threshold Sensitivity Due to Multiple Fragment Impacts

Description: Fragments, bullets or projectiles can initiate a detonation in a high explosive (HE). For this to happen certain critical conditions need to be exceeded. For a given explosive, these critical conditions are the projectile velocity, the projectile size and shape, and the projectile material properties. A lot of work has been done in the area of metal shaped charge jets and individual fragments impacting the HE. One major gap in understanding initiation phenomena is the effect of multiple fragmen… more

Investigation of Steven Impact Test Using a Transportation Hook Projectile with Gauged Experiments and 3D Modeling

Description: The Steven Impact Test and associated modeling offer valuable practical predictions for evaluating numerous safety scenarios involving low velocity impact of energetic materials by different projectile geometries. One such scenario is the impact of energetic material by a transportation hook during shipping, which offers complexity because of the irregular hook projectile shape. Experiments were performed using gauged Steven Test targets with PBX9404 impacted by a transportation hook projectile… more

Dynamics of Collisions Revealed by Classical Methods

Description: Single ionization of helium by impact of 3.6 MeV/u Au{sup 53+} ions is investigated by means of quantum and classical methods. Calculation of fully-differential cross sections are compared to recently published data for ionization of low-energy electrons as a function of the momentum transferred by the projectile to the target system. The results show that inclusion of the resolution and uncertainties present in the experiment has a major influence on both the shape and magnitude of the calcula… more

Threshold Studies of Heated HMX-Based Energetic Material Targets Using the Steven Impact Test

Description: Impact tests performed at low velocity on heated energetic material samples are of interest when considering the situation of energetic materials involved in a fire. To determine heated reaction thresholds, Steven Test targets containing PBX 9404 or LX-04 samples heated to the range of 150-170 C were impacted at velocities up to 150 m/s by two different projectile head geometries. Comparing these measured thresholds to ambient temperature thresholds revealed that the heated LX-04 thresholds wer… more

Finite element models to predict the structural response of 120-mm sabot/rods during launch

Description: Numerical modeling techniques in two- and three-dimensions were used to predict the structural and mechanical behavior of sabot/rod systems while inbore and just after muzzle exit. Three-dimensional transient numerical simulations were used to predict the rod deformations and states of stress and strain caused by axial and lateral accelerations during launch. The numerical models include the launch tube, recoil motion, and sabot/rod system modeled as it transits the launch tube and exits. The s… more

Long-rod projectiles against oblique targets: analysis and design recommendations

Description: Computer calculations provide an understanding of impact phenomena associated with long rod penetrators striking targets at oblique angles. The rod and target material behaviors are described by elastic-plastic work-hardening constitutive models. Ductile fracture is simulated by setting all tensile and shear stresses to zero when the calculated plastic deformation reaches a critical value. The important penetration material properties to defeat a given target are identified. There is no single … more

Recent Progress in the Scale-Up of TATB by the VNS Method

Description: The explosive TATB is used in the Department of Energy's main charges and boosters, where its extraordinary insensitivity to impact, spark and heat make it highly advantageous. This IHE is also used in booster applications in naval weapons, and is being tested as a main charge fill for hard target penetrator projectiles. (Slides 2-5) In order to meet demand, a continuing supply of TATB will be required. However, no production base exists in the U.S. for TATB production, and processes once used … more

Direct Energy Exchange Enhancement in Distributed Injection Light Gas Launchers

Description: It is not widely acknowledged or appreciated that conventional, two-stage light-gas launchers do not efficiently apply their high breech pressures to the design intent: accelerating the projectile. Our objective in this project was to carry out the analysis, design, construction, and testing of a new class of launchers that will address this limitation. Our particular application is to expand the pressure range of the conventional, two-stage gas launcher to overlap and validate the pressure reg… more
