The Distribution of the Positive-Negative Ratio for Mesons

Description: Positive and negative mesons produced in a common target in the cyclotron are received in two photographic plates. In the magnetic field of the cyclotron, negatives are deflected to one plate, positives to the other. The mesons must pass through an absorber before entering the plates in order to be observable.

Investigation of contamination bearing algae in the Columbia River

Description: Recent discussions in the group have given rise to the problem of determining whether the beta contamination found in the Columbia River is carried by the algae which are found in the retention basin. The algae accumulate in the basin and apparently remain there longer than the retained water, and thus may be contaminated to a greater extent than the water itself.

Review of the stack discharge active particle contamination problem

Description: Quantities of the order of ten million to 100 million radioactive particles per month were emitted from the stacks over a period of several months. High activity in the range 0.1 to 3..mu..c was probably confined to large carrier particles of corrosion debris from iron ductwork in the separations plant ventilation air system. This report discusses chemical, physical and radiochemical properties of the particles, and possible biological and health effects of exposure to them. (ACR)

Effect of Tensor Range in Nuclear Two-Body Problems

Description: The interaction between neutron and proton in the triplet state has been investigated. The central and tensor potentials have been assumed to be of the ''meson'' type but of possibly different ranges. The variational-iterational method has been utilized to determine V{sub o}, the strength of the central potential, and {gamma}V{sub o}, the strength of the tensor potential. A wide variation in the values of both central and tensor ranges were included. Calculations of this type have proved diffic… more

C-616 UF$sub 6$ HYDROLYSIS FUMES

Description: Experiments were carried out to determine how fast the concentration of suspended material decreases in fumes produced by the hydrolysis of UF/sub 6/ vapor in damp air. The rate of aggregation is a function chiefly of the number of particles per unit gas volume, but depends also on the chemical composition, size and shape of the particles, the temperature and pressure, and the degree of agitation. The rate of settling depends on the weight and shape of the particles and the viscosity of the gas… more

Equations of State of Elements Based on the Generalized Fermi-Thomas Theory

Description: The Fermi-Thomas model has been used to derive the equation of state of matter at high pressures and at various temperatures. Calculations have been carried out both without and with the exchange terms. Discussion of similarity transformations lead to the virial theorem and to correlation of solutions for different Z-values.

Critical dimensions of water-tamped slabs and spheres of active material

Description: The magnitude and distribution of the fission rate per unit area produced by three energy groups of moderated neutrons reflected from a water tamper into one side of an infinite slab of active material is calculated approximately in section II. This rate is directly proportional to the current density of fast neutrons from the active material incident on the water tamper. The critical slab thickness is obtained in section III by solving an inhomogeneous transport integral equation for the fast-… more

Atomic Displacements Produced by Fission Fragments and Fission Neutrons in Matter

Description: About four-fifths of the energy of the fission process is shared by the two heavy fragments into which the nucleus splits. This energy, of about 80 Mev. per fragment, is transferred to the medium in which the fission takes place in two ways. First, because each fragment is stripped of about half of its electrons during most of its path, it will interact strongly with electrons and thus lose energy through ionizing collisions with other atoms. Secondly, the fragments will lose energy by elastic … more

The Metabolism of Curium in the RAT

Description: The heaviest of the known elements is curium, which was recently discovered by Seaborg and his associates. This new element can be produced by the alpha particle transmutation of plutonium by the following reaction: {sub 94}Pu{sup 239} + {sub 2}He{sup 4} {yields} {sub 96}Cm{sup 242} + {sub 0}N{sup 1} This isotope of curium is radioactive and decays by the emission of an alpha particle to form plutonium 238 which, in turn, is also radioactive. Curium 242 has a half-life of 150 days, and its radi… more

Studies with Colloids Containing Radioisotopes of Yttrium, Zirconium, Columbium, and Lanthanum: 1. The Chemical Principles and Methods Involved in Preparation of Colloids of Yttrium, Zirconium, Columbium, and Lanthanum

Description: For a number of investigations, including fundamental studies of radiation effects on living tissues and therapeutic utilization of radioisotopes, it is valuable to have methods for the selective localization of radioisotopes in certain tissues. Finely dispersed anhydrous chromic phosphate has been found useful by Jones, Wrobel, and Lyons in selectively irradiating the liver and spleen with p{sup 32} beta particles. The present studies, reported in this and the following communication, are conc… more

The Fission of thorium with Alpha Particles

Description: Soon after the discovery of fission, Meitner, Bretscher and Cook found differences in the decay of various chemical fractions separated from uranium irradiated with slow neutrons and thorium irradiated with fast neutrons respectively and suggested that a difference existed in the distribution of fission products in the two cases. In 1940, Turner suggested that the distribution in various modes of fission should be investigated. The fact that elements such as tin, cadmium, palladium, and silver … more

Studies with Colloids Containing Radioisotopes of Yttrium, Zirconium, Columbium and Lanthaum: 2. The Controlled Selective Localization of Radioisotopes of Yttrium, Zirconium, Columbium in the Bone Marrow, Liver and Spleen

Description: Several workers have shown that certain colloidally dispered materials are removed from the blood stream by the liver and spleen. Jones, Wrobel, and Lyons have utilized suspensions of anhydrous chromic phosphate for the selective irradiation of the liver and spleen with p{sup 32} beta particles. Gersh demonstrated that colloidal calcium phosphate is taken up by the liver and spleen. He stressed the failure of bone marrow phagocytes to take up this colloid in rats and dogs (though he referred to… more

The Fission of Thorium with Alpha Particles

Description: The fission distribution of fission of thorium with alpha particle of average energy 37.5 Mev has been measured by the chemical method. The distribution found shows that the characteristic dip in the fission yield mass spectrum has been raised to within a factor of two of the peaks compared to a factor of 600 in slow neutron fission of U{sup 235}. The raise in the deip has caused a corresponding lowering in fission yield of these elements at the peaks. The cross section for fission of thorium w… more

Production of Mesons by the 184-inch Berkeley Cyclotron

Description: The authors have observed tracks which they believe to be due to mesons in photographic plates placed near a target bombarded by 380 Mev alpha particles. For a 10-minute exposure in the cyclotron, about 50 meson tracks are found along the 3-inch edge of a photographic plate. The mass has been determined by measuring the bending in the magnetic field and the range in emulsion. From the first 50 meson tracks measured they find a mass of 313 {+-} 16 electron masses. It is highly probable that thes… more
