Inclusive Charged- and Neutral-Current Antineutrino-Proton Interactions at High Energy. [Cross Sections, Quark-Parton Model]

Description: Results on antineutrino-proton interactions observed in the Fermilab 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber are presented. The charged-current semi-inclusive distributions, as a function of X, Y, Q/sup 2/ and W, are compared with the predictions of the naive quark parton model. Within statistics, no marked dependence of the Y distribution on E/sub nu/ was observed. R/sub anti nu/, the antineutrino neutral-current to charged-current cross section ratio is calculated, and results are presented as a func… more

Neutral-Current Detection in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

Description: The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) will have the capability of detecting all active species of neutrinos with energies greater than 2.2 MeV by the neutral-current disintegration of deuterium. The comparison of this rate with the rate of inverse beta decay of the deuteron will yield a nearly model-independent answer to the question of whether electron neutrinos from the sun oscillate into mu or tau neutrinos. The signal of a neutral-current interaction is the liberation of a free neutron in … more

Measurement of. nu. p. --> nu. p and anti. nu. p. -->. anti. nu. p elastic scattering. [Differential cross sections, systematic errors, coupling-constant constraints, form factors]

Description: There were 217 (66) events of the process ..nu..p..--> nu..p (anti ..nu..p..-->..anti..nu..p) with an estimated background of 82 (28). The neutral to charged current ratios are sigma(..nu..p..--> nu..p)/sigma(..nu..n..--> mu../sup -/p) = 0.11 +- 0.02 and sigma(anti ..nu..p ..-->.. anti ..nu..p)/sigma (anti ..nu..p ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/n) = 0.19 +- 0.05 for 0.40 < q/sup 2/ < 0.90 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ where -q/sup 2/ is the square of the four momentum transfer to the proton. These yield sigma(anti ..nu… more

Recent results from neutrino interactions in heavy neon

Description: We report recent results from an analysis of 100,000 pictures from the Fermilab 15 ft. bubble chamber filled with heavy neon and exposed to the double horn focused, wideband ..nu../sub ..mu../ beam. We have found 164 dilepton (..mu../sup -/e/sup +/) events with 33 vees, in good agreement with the GIM model of charm production. We have also observed the production of the charmed D/sup 0/ meson, followed by the decay D/sup 0/ ..-->.. K/sup 0/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/, at a rate of (0.7 +- 0.2… more

Search for Horizontal Bosons at the SSC

Description: The production process anti p p ..-->.. l/sup -/l'/sup +/ + X, where the leptons belong to two different generations and X refers to spectator jets, provides a clear signature for horizontal (generation-changing) bosons when the leptons are emitted nearly back-to-back and p/sub T//sup miss/ = 0. Cross sections and p/sub T/ distributions for each lepton are presented, and discovery limits on M/sub H/ are extracted for several different channels.

Observation of the process. nu. /sub. mu. / + e/sup -/. -->. nu. /sub. mu. / + e/sup -/ at high energies. [Preliminary results, Weinberg-Salam model, mixing angle]

Description: There were 5 events of the reaction ..nu../sub ..mu../ + e/sup -/ ..-->.. ..nu../sub ..mu../ + e/sup -/ in a sample of approximately 50,000 charged current neutrino interactions in a heavy neon-hydrogen mixture in the 15 foot bubble chamber at Fermilab. This result is in rough agreement with the prediction of the Weinberg-Salam model with the currently favored value of the mixing angle, sin/sup 2/ theta approximately 1/4.

Weak-neutral-current elastic scattering of neutrinos

Description: We present progress to date in an experiment (E0734) to measure neutral current phenomena at low neutrino energy (200 less than or equal to E/sub nu/ less than or equal to 3 GeV). The principal goals center upon the elastic reactions: anti nu/sub ..mu../ + p ..-->.. anti nu/sub ..mu../ + p, and anti nu/sub ..mu../ + e ..-->.. anti nu/sub ..mu../ + e.

Departure from Weinberg-Salam model and grandunification

Description: The spontaneous breaking of grandunified groups like SO(10) or SU(8) x SU(8) can lead to an extra U(1) group beyond Weinberg-Salam (W-S) SU(2) x U(1). Neutral current data are now shown to depend on two more parameters. The data are examined and limits are put on the mass of the extra Z boson. Need for more experiments on parity violation effects in atoms is stressed. 2 figures, 1 table.

Charged and neutral current couplings of quarks (as seen by neutrinos). [Cross sections]

Description: Aspects of charged-current scattering including the question of whether the cross sections are ''anomalous'' in any sense and the subject of limits on the production of new heavy quarks are discussed. A new, unique determination of neutral-current couplings is discussed using data from deep-inelastic and elastic neutrino scatterings and from neutrino-induced exclusive and inclusive pion production. Charged-current couplings are treated in the context of the Weinberg-Salam (WS) theory of weak an… more

Weak interactions. [SU(2) symmetry, electromagnetic correction]

Description: The weak interaction is studied from a phenomenological viewpoint. The aim is to describe the present situation concisely, using a minimal number of theoretical hypotheses. First, charged-current phenomenology is discussed, then neutral-current phenomenology. This can all be described in terms of a global SU(2) symmetry plus an electromagnetic correction. The intermediate-boson hypothesis is then introduced, and lower bounds are inferred on the range of the weak force. 18 references. (JFP)

Weak neutral-current interactions

Description: The roles of each type of experiment in establishing uniquely the values of the the neutral-current couplings of u and d quarks are analyzed together with their implications for gauge models of the weak and electromagnetic interactions. An analysis of the neutral-current couplings of electrons and of the data based on the assumption that only one Z/sup 0/ boson exists is given. Also a model-independent analysis of parity violation experiments is discussed. 85 references. (JFP)

Minimally Extended Elctroweak Gauge Theories in SO(10) and E/sub 6/

Description: The possibility of minimally extending the standard SU(2)/sub L/xU(1) electroweak theory within the context of SO(10) and E/sub 6/ grand unification by adding U(1) factors is explored. The neutrino neutral-current interactions in these schemes are arranged to coincide with the standard-model predictions. Limits on the masses of the extra Z's generated by these U(1) factors are obtained by considering other parity-violating effects. Additional Z's as light as 2.5 to 3.0 times the standard model … more

Higgs boson production by very high energy neutrinos. [1 to 1000 TeV, cross sections]

Description: Higgs bosons may be produced by bremsstrahlung off a virtual W/sup +-/ or a Z/sup 0/ exchanged in a charged or neutral current neutrino interaction. The production cross sections are calculated, and it is pointed out that they cannot grow quadratically with E/sub nu/ as had been suggested earlier, and it is argued that at best they can increase like the square of ln s/M/sup 2//sub W,Z/ at very high energies. Using a simple approximation for the propagator effect, numerical results in the high e… more

A Search for Flavour Changing Neutral Current Processes in Decays of Charmed Mesons

Description: Neutral current interactions are known from studies of K meson decays to conserve flavor to a high precision. Although flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) are forbidden in the Weinberg-Salam model, many extensions of the Standard Model allow such processes. We present preliminary upper limits on FCNC-mediated decays of charmed particles, namely D/sup 0/ ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup -/, D/sup 0/ ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/, D/sup 0/ ..-->.. ..mu..e and D/sup +/ ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/..mu..e.
