Effects of substrate temperature on silicon nitride cracking of beam lead devices during thermocompression wobble bonding

Description: Recent failures in several completed Sandia Laboratories' electronic systems have traced to specific format 25 beam lead transistors and diodes. More extensive failure analysis on the devices showed them to exceed their respective specifications in electrical leakage. All of the failed devices were observed to have one thing in common: cracked silicon nitride over the beams. These observations triggered several investigations to determine if cracked silicon nitride causes electrical failures, w… more

Energy extraction characteristics of hot dry rock geothermal systems

Description: The LASL Hot Dry Rock Geothermal Energy Project is investigating methods to extract energy at useful temperatures and rates from naturally heated crustal rock in locations where the rock does not spontaneously yield natural steam or hot water at a rate sufficient to support commercial utilization. Several concepts are discussed for application to low and high permeability formations. The method being investigated first is intended for use in formations of low initial permeability. It involves p… more

Effect of machining damage on tensile properties of beryllium

Description: It is well established that damage introduced at the surface of beryllium during machining operations can lower its mechanical properties. Tensile tests were conducted to illustrate this on beryllium presently being used for parts in the W79 program and similar to the new powder-processed beryllium specified for production (tentative specification MEL 76-001319). The objective of this study is to quantitatively illuminate the importance of controlling machining damage in this particular grade o… more

Metallurgical factors that contribute to cracking in BWR piping

Description: During the fall of 1974 and early winter of 1975, cracks have been discovered in the 4 in. bypass lines of several Boiling Water Reactors (BWR's) in the United States. Further, similar cracks were discovered at two BWR's in Japan during the same period. More recently, cracks have been discovered in the core spray piping and in a furnace-sensitized "safe end" and adjacent "dutchman" at the Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 2. Although inspections at all other U.S. BWR's have not disclosed … more

Segregation induced embrittlement of grain interfaces

Description: Conditions are discussed under which an interface, possibly containing an adsorbed species, is capable of sustaining an atomistically sharp cleavage crack, rather than having any such crack blunt out via dislocation nucleation. Two models for ductile versus brittle interface response are discussed. One of these is applied to model grain boundaries in face centered cubic materials, and is used to compare predictions with experimental observations on the embrittlement of Cu polycrystals by the ad… more

Application of stress corrosion to geothermal reservoirs

Description: There are several alternative equations which describe slow crack growth by stress corrosion. Presently available data suggest that an alternative form may be preferable to the form which is most often used, but the issue cannot be clearly decided. Presently available stress corrosion data on glasses and ceramics suggest that rocks in a proposed geothermal reservoir will crack readily over long time periods, thus seriously limiting the operation of this type of power source. However, in situ hy… more

Combined Macroscopic and Microscopic Approach to the Fracture of Metals. Technical Progress Report, July 1976--June 1977

Description: The work includes the completion of a comprehensive study of the contributions of dislocation substructures and local stresses at particle interfaces to the strain hardening of dispersion hardened steels, and the presentation of a model of segregant induced embrittlement of grain interfaces. Work was continued on crack initiation at inclusions and on the theory of plastic flow localization. These microscopic effects are discussed in relation to the mechanisms of brittle fracture and ductile rup… more

Finite Deformation Analysis of Crack Tip Opening in Elastic-Plastic Materials and Implications for Fracture Initiation

Description: Analyses of the stress and strain fields around smoothly blunting crack tips in both non-hardening and hardening elastic-plastic materials, under contained plane strain yielding and subject to mode I opening loads, have been carried out by a finite element method suitably formulated to admit large geometry changes. The results include the crack tip shape and near-tip deformation field, and the crack tip opening displacement has been related to a parameter of the applied load, the J-integral. Th… more

Effects of strength and grain size on near-threshold fatigue crack growth in ultra-high strength steel

Description: Fatigue tests were performed on ultra-high strength steels to assess (i) the influence of strength at constant grain size, and (ii) the influence of grain size at constant strength, on threshold stress intensity and near-threshold crack propagation rates. The results constitute part of a larger program of research to characterize the microstructural influences on fatigue crack propagation at growth rates less than 10/sup -5/ mm/cycle in an attempt to provide a basis for the design of alloys res… more
