Selective Noncatalytic Reduction of NOx Using Ammonium Sulfate

Description: Article discusses how ammonium sulfate (AS) is of interest as an additive in stationary combustion plants for the simultaneous control of NOx (through selective noncatalytic reduction, SNCR) and deposition and corrosion (through sulfation of alkali chlorides). The results indicated that sulfur from ammonium sulfate is mainly released as SO3, even though SO2 is detected in increasing concentrations at temperatures above 1000 °C. This is the accepted manuscript version of the published article.

The Fixation of Caesium on Australian Minerals. Part 2, Zeolite Minerals

Description: Samples from possible zoolite bearing deposits have been tested for cation exchange capacity using batch and column experiments. The best material, Eagleton Quarry pink shale, was given more exhaustive column tests to determine the effect of mineral particle size, influent flowrate, and the presence of competing cations on caseium breakthrough. Diffusion of caesium ions through the mineral particle controls the ion exchange process. At the optimum size of (-30+36) B.S.S. the cation exchange cap… more

Cation Exchange in Acetone-Water-Hydrochloric Acid

Description: Abstract: Distribution coefficients have been measured for the partition of metal ions between cation exchange resin and acetone-water-hydrochloric acid solutions. the differences in distribution coefficients of metal ions are greater in acetone-water media than in aqueous media of the same hydrochloric acid concentration. Using distribution coefficient data, conditions for column separations of mixtures can be selected. Column separations of metal ion mixtures can be effected by eluting wit… more

The Mass Spectra of Some Volatile Hydrides

Description: From abstract: "The hydrides of group VB an VB elements, except CH4 and NH3, have been prepared and, except for PbH4 and BiH3, their mass spectra studied. Fragmentation patterns and appearance potentials of the positive ions from these hydrides are reported. The ions have been tested for excess kinetic energy and this energy was found to be negligible. The average M-H bond energies and the ΔHf° obtained from appearance potential data agree well with values obtained by other methods. Evidence is… more

Cation Exchange Separation of Divalent Metal Ions From Rare Earths

Description: From abstract: "The divalent metal ions of calcium, magnesium, nickel, and strontium are eluted from a cation exchange column with 1.5M nitric acid and separated from trivalent rare earths, aluminum and yttrium. Prior sequential elution of other metal ions with hydrochloric acid in acetone-water or with dilute hydrofluoric acid does not interfere with the present separation method."

Concentration of Plutonium by Cation Exchange Part I - New Elutriants

Description: From summary: "The concentration of plutonium by cation exchange was significantly improved by using a solution of ammonium lactate and sulfamate as the elutriant instead of nitric and sulfamic acids. The new elutriant permitted essentially complete elution of the plutonium and also avoided formation of gases in the resin bed during elution. At 45ºC, 2.8M ammonium lactate plus 0.15M ammonium sulfamate eluted 99.3 per cent of the total plutonium at an average concentration of 43.8 grams per lite… more

Exchange of lyotropic series cations by micaceous vermiculite and its weathering products determined by electron microscopy and radiochemical analysis. Progress report, August 1, 1974--October 31, 1977

Description: Determination of layer charge of micas by /sup 235/U fission particle tracks (thermal neutron activated) was completed by a development of a unique method of UO/sup 2 +/ saturation at pH 2.4 and removal of excess salts physically. The U content and age-dating of soil micas was also accomplished by fission particle counting. Thermodynamic metastability of micaceous vermiculite in soils with reversible mica-vermiculite reactions were found to result in extremely tenacious natural fixation of Cs/s… more

Dissociation of fast molecular-ion beams in thin foils. [1 MeV/nucleon]

Description: Distributions in angle and in energy were measured for the break-up fragments produced when fast (approximately MeV/nucleon) beams of molecular ions (H/sub 2//sup +/, HeH/sup +/, OH/sup +/, etc.) bombard thin foil targets. Studies were made using both amorphous and crystalline targets. The results display some dramatic departures from expectations based on a simple Coulomb explosion picture in which a cluster of nuclei stripped of their binding electrons move apart under the influence of their … more

Gd/sup 3 +/ EPR probe of the determination of the valence states

Description: The theory of the Gd/sup 3 +/ probe EPR technique is reviewed. This technique was employed to investigate at 9.2 GHz the Gd/sup 3 +/ EPR in 0.1 at. percent GdS in TmS, 1 at. percent GdTe in TmTe, and 1 at. percent GdSe in TmSe. From the temperature dependence of the Gd/sup 3 +/ EPR linewidth, it is concluded that Tm in TmS is trivalent with a singlet-ground-state. The temperature variation of the Gd/sup 3 +/ linewidth in TmTe was interpreted in terms of the ''delocalization'' of the extra elect… more

Efficient production of neutral beams by photodetachment of negative ions

Description: A neutral fraction approaching 97 percent can be attained by photodetachment of negative ions if the photon density and thickness are adequate. This high efficiency of neutralization is desirable not only because of the improvement in power balance and power efficiency but also because of the increase in the useable beam current per module. Only modest improvements in commercial solid-state lasers are required to fulfill the requirements of a photodetachment cell for a fusion reactor. The wavel… more

Valence and ionic size of aqueous actinide ions

Description: A comparison of crystallographic radii of actinide ions with their stability in aqueous solutions shows that except for Ac/sup 3 +/ and Th/sup 4 +/, the simple actinide ions stable in aqueous solutions have ionic radii between 0.93 and 1.05 A. Extrapolation of crystal radii to the heavy actinides suggests that 2+ ions of Fm, Es, and possibly Cf could exist in aqueous solutions, and that 4+ ions of elements heavier than Cf would be unstable.
