Rheological properties of kaolin and chemically simulated waste

Description: The Savannah River Laboratory is conducting tests to determine the best operating conditions of pumps used to transfer insoluble radioactive sludges from old to new waste tanks. Because it is not feasible to conduct these tests with real or chemically simulated sludges, kaolin clay is being used as a stand-in for the solid waste. The rheology tests described herein were conducted to determine whether the properties of kaolin were sufficiently similar to those of real sludge to permit meaningful… more

Greater confinement disposal program at the Savannah River Plant

Description: A demonstration Greater Confinement Disposal facility, consisting of twenty GCD boreholes, began accepting solid low-level radioactive waste at the Savannah River Plant in 1984. Three of the boreholes have been filled with the higher activity fraction of SRP solid waste. They have been stabilized with grout to prevent subsidence and reduce water infiltration. Closure will take place when all twenty boreholes have been filled. A Greater Confinement Disposal trench project is underway, with const… more

Analysis of soil and water at the Four Mile Creek seepline near the F H Areas of SRS

Description: Until 1988, solutions containing sodium hydroxide, nitride acid, low levels of radionuclides (mostly tritiated water) and some metals were discharged to unlined seepage basins at the F and H Areas of the Savannah River Site (SRS) as part of normal operations (Killian et al, 1987a,b). The basins are now being closed according to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). As part of the closure, a Part B Post-Closure Care Permit is being prepared. The information included in this report w… more

Correlation between predicted and observed levels of airborne tritium at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory site boundary

Description: At the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, a computer code based on the Gaussian plume model is used to estimate radiation doses from routine or accidental release of airborne radioactive material. Routine releases of tritium have been used as a test of the overall uncertainty associated with these estimates. The ration of concentration to release rate at distances from the two principal release points to each of six site boundary sampling locations has been calcuated using local meteorological data… more

Organizational cultural survey of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center

Description: At the request of the Department of Energy, an Organizational Survey (OS) was administered at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The OS measured employees' opinions on subjects such as organizational culture, communication, commitment, group cohesion, coordination, safety, environmental issues, and job satisfaction. The result of this work was a quantitative measure of the notion of culture at the SLAC site. This report presents these results and discusses their interpretation.

Chemical treatments of soil to decrease radiostrontium leachability

Description: The ready leachability of radiostrontium from radioactive waste is one of the most salient problems with shallow-land burial as a disposal method. The continuous leaching of buried waste at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, for periods up to thirty years, has led to contamination of significant volumes of soil with /sup 90/Sr. The goal of the present investigation was to evaluate methods to effect the in situ fixation or decrease the leachability of /sup 90/Sr from soil. Small columns of three… more

Processing Capabilities for the Elimination of Contaminated Metal Scrapyards at DOE/ORO-Managed Sites

Description: Capabilities exist for reducing all the contaminated nickel, aluminum, and copper scrap to ingot form by smelting. Processing these metals at existing facilities could be completed in about 5 or 6 years. However, these metals represent only about 20% of the total metal inventories currently on hand at the DOE/ORO-managed sites. No provisions have been made for the ferrous scrap. Most of the ferrous scrap is unclassified and does not require secured storage. Also, the potential resale value of t… more

Brookhaven integrated energy/economy modeling system and its use in conservation policy analysis

Description: The approach used at BNL to model the impact of the introduction of advanced energy technologies in response to increased energy prices has been to link econometric, process, and input-output models. The econometric model generates growth, employment, productivity, inflation, final demand, and price-determined input-output coefficients for a ten-sector interindustry model. The outputs from the six energy sectors are used to drive a national energy process model which supplies energy prices, fue… more

Evaluated data collections from ENSDF. [ORNL]

Description: For several years the Nuclear Data Project has been maintaining an Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF), which is designed to include critically evaluated values for most nuclear spectroscopic quantities. The information in ENSDF is the same as in the Nuclear Data Sheets, which illustrates two particular output formats (drawings and tables). Spectroscopic information for nuclei with A < 45 is put into ENSDF from the evaluations of Aizenberg-Selove and of Endt and van der Leun. An inter… more

Ventilation systems analysis during tornado conditions. Progress report, October 1, 1976--April 30, 1977. [TVENT]

Description: A computer code, TVENT, has been developed to predict the tornado-induced pressures and flows within an arbitrary nuclear facility ventilation system. Operational experience with TVENT in analyzing an ERDA facility has resulted in code modifications. Several architectural firms have agreed to use TVENT to analyze their designs. They will provide us with comments on the code and user's manual to make them more useful. Our investigation of the feasibility of scale model analysis to provide additi… more

Description: The design of high-intensity accelerators is described, using examples of machines being built at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The major design problem with these accelerators is associated with control of beam loss when accelerator intensity is increased. Beam dynamics, beam loss, and the radio-frequency quadrupole structure are discussed in the first part of the chapter followed by an explanation of plans to achieve high-intensity operation in three projects: the Fusion Material Irradi… more
