Computational techniques used in the development of coprocessing flowsheets [SEPHIS]

Description: The computer program SEPHIS, developed to aid in determining optimum solvent extraction conditions for the reprocessing of nuclear power reactor fuels by the Purex method, is described. The program employs a combination of approximate mathematical equilibrium expressions and a transient, stagewise-process calculational method to allow stage and product-stream concentrations to be predicted with accuracy and reliability. The possible applications to inventory control for nuclear material safegua… more

Fast reactor fuel reprocessing development in the United States: an overview

Description: As a result of the reduced nuclear power demand and the growing concerns over the potential proliferation of sensitive nuclear materials, there has not been a necessity to make immediate decisions regarding near-term reprocessing and breeder reactor commercialization. Programs which formed the basic thrust of nuclear development in the early 1970's have already been adjusted: increased emphasis on problems of radioactive waste management; increased attention to nonproliferation objectives … more

Development of a Venturi Type Bubble Generator for Use in the Molten-Salt Reactor Xenon Removal System

Description: A venturi type bubble generator was developed for application in the xenon removal system proposed for a molten-salt breeder reactor. Gas injected into the high velocity liquid at the venturi throat is fromed into bubbles by the fluid turbulence in the diffuser cone. Tests were conducted using aqueous solutions to determine the various pressure drops of the bubble generator as a function of liquid and gas flow rates and to determine the bubble diameter produced. Empirical relationships were dev… more

Fate of Electrons with Energies Less Than 100 eV

Description: An introduction is given to some of the major processes which take place when low energy electrons collide with molecules. Temporary negative ion states, dissociative electron attachment, and vibrational and rotational excitation are emphasized. Resonances and some comments on H{sub 2}O are also covered. 45 refs.

Campbell Creek TVA 2010 First Year Performance Report July 1, 2009 August 31, 2010

Description: This research project was initiated by TVA in March 2008 and encompasses three houses that are of similar size, design and located within the same community - Campbell Creek, Farragut TN with simulated occupancy. This report covers the performance period from July 1, 2009 to August 31, 2010. It is the intent of TVA that this Valley Data will inform electric utilities future residential retrofit incentive program.

Lessons Learned From Developing Reactor Pressure Vessel Steel Embrittlement Database

Description: Materials behaviors caused by neutron irradiation under fission and/or fusion environments can be little understood without practical examination. Easily accessible material information system with large material database using effective computers is necessary for design of nuclear materials and analyses or simulations of the phenomena. The developed Embrittlement Data Base (EDB) at ORNL is this comprehensive collection of data. EDB database contains power reactor pressure vessel surveillance d… more

TASK 2.5.4 DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENERGY SAVINGS CALCULATOR

Description: California s major energy utilities and the California Energy Commission (CEC) are seeking to allocate capital that yields the greatest return on investment for energy infrastructure that meets any part of the need for reliable supplies of energy. The utilities are keenly interested in knowing the amount of electrical energy savings that would occur if cool roof color materials are adopted in the building market. To meet this need the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Lawrence Berkeley Nati… more
