Tritons and tritides as the solute and diffusing species in ceramic tritium breeders

Description: Intragranular diffusion of tritium is one component of the overall process for tritium release from lithium-containing ceramics that may be used to breed tritium in a fusion reactor. The nature of this transport is reviewed in terms of the understanding established for the mechanism of hydrogen migration in other oxides. In this mechanism, the diffusing species is the proton, which moves from oxide ion to oxide ion, thereby giving rise to apparent hydroxide migration. Analogously, at high oxyge… more

Conceptual design description for the tritium recovery system for the US ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) Li sub 2 O/Be water cooled blanket

Description: The tritium recovery system for the US ITER Li{sub 2}O/Be water cooled blanket processes two separate helium purge streams to recover tritium from the Li{sub 2}O zones and the Be zones of the blanket, to process the waste products, and to recirculate the helium back to the blanket. The components are selected to minimize the tritium inventory of the recovery system, and to minimize waste products. The system is robust to either an increase in the tritium release rate or to an in-leak of water i… more

A continuous mode data acquisition technique for proton recoil proportional counter neutron spectrometers

Description: The existing proton recoil proportional counter measurement technique used at FNS for joint FNS-ANL fusion blanket neutron spectroscopy requires that numerous piece-wise (but overlapping) measurements be carried out at a sequence of fixed counter voltages. The composite results of all of these independent measurements are required to construct a single neutron spectrum. This approach has been found to be both inefficient and subject to systematic errors. An alternative approach, in which data i… more

Simulations of ICRF-fast wave current drive on DIIID

Description: Self-consistent calculations of MHD equilibria, generated by fast wave current drive and including the bootstrap effect, were done to guide and anticipate the results of upcoming experiments on the DIIID tokamak. The simulations predict that 2 MW of ICRF power is more than adequate to create several hundred kiloamperes in steady state; the total current increases with the temperature and density of the target plasma. 12 refs., 12 figs., 1 tab.

Neoclassical effects on rf current drive

Description: A functional form is derived for the efficiency of current drive in toroidal geometry with low frequency waves (frequencies below the electron cyclotron frequency). By fitting constants in order to duplicate numerical results for the efficiency we obtain an accurate function which will be useful for computer calculations of current drive. 13 refs., 6 figs.

Interaction of impurity ions with a weakly non-Maxwellian simple hydrogenic plasma

Description: The average acceleration of an ensemble of ''test particles'' in a plasma is called the ''dynamical friction''; the average rate at which their velocity vectors spread out in velocity space is expressed in a velocity-space diffusion-rate tensor. These quantities are derived for impurity ions interacting with a weakly non-Maxwellian simple hydrogenic plasma. The distribution functions for the plasma ions and electrons are written explicitly. 5 refs., 3 figs.

Three-dimensional MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) flows in rectangular ducts of liquid-metal-cooled blankets

Description: Magnetohydrodynamic flows of liquid metals in rectangular ducts with thin conducting walls in the presence of strong nonuniform transverse magnetic fields are examined. The interaction parameter and Hartmann number are assumed to be large, whereas the magnetic Reynolds number is assumed to be small. Under these assumptions, viscous and inertial effects are confined in very thin boundary layers adjacent to the walls. A significant fraction of the fluid flow is concentrated in the boundary layers… more

Liquid metal flow in a large-radius elbow with a uniform magnetic fluid

Description: This paper treats the liquid-metal flow in an elbow between two straight, rectangular ducts. There is a uniform magnetic field in the plane of the elbow. The duct has thin, electrically conducting walls. The Hartmann number and the interaction parameter are assumed to be large, while the magnetic Reynolds number is assumed to be small. Solutions for the velocity at each cross section of the elbow and for the pressure drop due to three-dimensional effects are presented. 10 refs., 5 figs.

Bootstrap currents in radio-frequency-driven tokamak equilibria

Description: Interest in the bootstrap current arising from neoclassical transport in tokamaks has increased recently in view of certain experimental observations. In this study, the bootstrap current is calculated for a number of rf current-driven tokamaks. Two-dimensional, self-consistent, steady-state tokamak MHD equilibria are obtained by including both the transport-driven bootstrap current and the externally driven rf current. The self-consistency is acomplished by iterating between two-dimensional MH… more

A method for determining poloidal coil configurations for tokamak devices

Description: This paper presents a method for obtaining the locations and currents of the poloidal coil systems for a tokamak, given an desirable magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium for the device. The method involves a simultaneous minimization of the match to the desired poloidal field and the stored energy in the coils, subject to the constraints necessary to achieve decoupling of the equilibrium and inductive-current-drive (ohmic-heating) systems and to achieve a given coupling of the current-drive system w… more

Application of high temperature ceramic superconductors (CSC) to commercial tokamak reactors

Description: Ceramic superconductors operating near liquid nitrogen temperature may experience higher heating rates without losing stability, compared to conventional superconductors. This will permit cable design with less stabilizer, reducing fabrication costs for large fusion magnets. Magnet performance is studied for different operating current densities in the superconductor, and cost benefits to commercial tokamak reactors are estimated. It appears that 10 kA . cm/sup -2/ (at 77 K and approx.10 T) is … more
