Production test-105-55-P -- Reactivity of the B Pile under shutdown conditions. Interim report

Description: At the shutdown of the B Pile, 269 active tubes were discharged and ten poison columns were charged. As a result, the pile was let considerably below critical. The present test described in this report was set up to develop methods of detecting possible changes in reactivity by periodic measurements of neutron flux in the shutdown pile. The irradiation of indium foils in an empty process tube was found to provide a satisfactory method of monitoring the shutdown pile, and was sensitive than the … more

Production of Ta{sup 182}

Description: This memorandum discusses briefly and approximately the two extreme programs which could be followed in the production of Ta{sup 182}: the use of present available excess reactivity, and the use of a pile, continuing no U{sup 238}, expressly to produce Ta{sup 182}. Use of lesser amounts of enriched material would achieve lesser production rates. The cost in fissionable material per gram of active isotope would remain approximately the same.

Process tubes at B Pile

Description: This memorandum discusses the roflanging of the corroded rear Van Stone flanges at the B Pile after cutting 3/8-inch off the rear gun barrel which should place the B Pile in a condition as good as, or better than that of the D or F Piles.

Beta M2 Slit Support

Description: A new G slit support utilizing the standard G carbon now in use in all Beta production buildings was tested over approximately four months in the Pilot Plant with very successful results. A considerable saving has been made both in servicing time and in costs. The equipment has proved to be the best of any tried from the standpoint of run terminations due to alignment difficulties.
