Geology and Fuel Resources of the Southern Part of the Oklahoma Coal Field: Part 2. The Lehigh District Coal, Atoka, and Pittsburg Counties

Description: From abstract: The rocks exposed in the Lehigh district, in the Arkansas-Oklahoma coal basin, aggregate at least 5,000 feet in thickness. All are of Pennsylvanian age, except scattered thin Pleistocene (?) and Recent deposits. Rocks of Pottsville age crop out extensively in the southwestern part of the district and include the Springer formation, Wapanucka limestone, and Atoka formation. The Pottsville rocks are overlain in the northeastern part by formations of Allegheny age, including the Hartshorne sandstone. McAlester shale, Savanna sandstone, Boggy shale, and Thurman sandstone.

Geology and Fuel Resources of the Southern Part of the Oklahoma Coal Field: Part 3. Quinton-Scipio District

Description: From abstract: The Quinton-Scipio district includes about 450 square miles, mostly in Pittsburg County but partly in Haskell and Latimer Counties, Okla. The stratified rocks exposed at the surface in the district are the McAlester, Savanna, Boggy, Thurman, Stuart, and Senora formations, of Pennsylvanian age, and consist of alternating beds of shale and sandstone with some coal beds and a few beds of limestone less than 1 foot thick. The total thickness of these formations exposed in the district is between 3,000 and 3,300 feet. There are probably unconformities at the base of the Savanna sandstone and at the base of the Thurman sandstone. Overlying the Pennsylvanian formations in parts of the district are unconsolidated sand, gravel, and clay, which in part belong to the Gerty sand, a deposit in an abandoned Quaternary (?) river channel. Other unconsolidated deposits include sand on stream terraces and Recent alluvium.

Preventing Soil Blowing on the Southern Great Plains

Description: "Soil blowing is often a serious problem from December to May [in the Southern Great Plains], when the soil is, in many cases, bare and winds are high. This period is often referred to as the 'blow season.' The whole art of preventing and controlling soil blowing consists in keeping nonblowing materials on the surface. These may be crops, crop residues, or clods. When crops are absent, the essential feature in preventing soil blowing is the use of implements that lift clods and other nonblowing materials to the surface rather than implements that pulverize or destroy them.... Since tillage is dependent on implements, it seems of first importance to consider the implements that may be used to discuss their merits and shortcomings in relation to soil blowing.... From the general principles stated and the specific examples of implement use given, most farmers can probably decide on the correct applications for their farms." -- p. 1-3

Description: "Among the most striking manifestations of the destruction of soils and crops by the windstorms of recent years are the gigantic sand dunes that have formed on some of the lighter soils of the Great Plains. Specialists of the Soil Conservation Service who were assigned to a study of the problem have been successful in devising methods by which these immense piles of sand, which have covered cultivated lands and good native sod, can be leveled and stabilized. Of still greater value to the farmers and ranchers in areas subject to this soil shifting are the methods of cultivation and land use that recent study and experiments have revealed as the best means of protection against the formation of dunes. "This bulletin applies both to the western portions of the United States in which ordinary farm crops are grown largely under irrigation and to western Oregon and Washington where irrigation is not essential for strawberry production but may be profitable. It describes methods practiced in the more important commercial strawberry-growing districts of the West; it aims to aid those persons familiar only with local and perhaps unsatisfactory methods, as well as inexperienced prospective growers. The fundamental principles of the irrigation of strawberries are substantially the same as those of irrigating other crops. Details must necessarily be governed largely by the character of the crop grown.
