Pollutant Emission Factors from Residential Natural Gas Appliances: A Literature Review

Description: There is a need to reduce air pollutant emissions in some U.S. urban regions to meet federal and state air quality guidelines. Opportunities exist for reducing pollutant emissions from natural gas appliances in the residential sector. A cost-benefit analysis on various pollutant-reducing strategies is needed to evaluate these opportunities. The effectiveness of these pollutant-reducing strategies (e.g., low-emission burners, energy conservation) can then be ranked among themselves and compared … more

High energy implantation with high-charge-state ions in a vacuum arc ion implanter

Description: Ion implantation energy can in principal be increased by increasing the charge states of the ions produced by the ion source rather than by increasing the implanter operating voltage, providing an important savings in cost and size of the implanter. In some recent work the authors have shown that the charge states of metal ions produced in a vacuum arc ion source can be elevated by a strong magnetic field. In general, the effect of both high arc current and high magnetic field is to push the di… more

Parity violation in bottom quark pair production at polarized hadron colliders

Description: Parity violation induced by the chromo-anapole form factor of the bottom quark, generated from weak corrections, is studied in polarized hadron collisions. The forward-backward asymmetry in the bottom quark pair production at polarized pp and p{anti p} colliders is evaluated in the Standard Model and in a Two Higgs Doublet Model to examine the effects of parity violation. In the models studied, promising results are found for polarized p{anti p} colliders.

Hadron production in light and heavy, quark and antiquark jets

Description: The authors review four hadronization studies performed by the SLD experiment at SLAC, involving separation of light (Z{sup 0} {r_arrow} u{anti u}, d{anti d}, s{anti s}), c, and b flavors using precision vertexing, and separation of q- and {anti q}-jets using the highly polarized SLC electron beam. They measured the differences between the average charged multiplicities in Z{sup 0} {r_arrow} light, {r_arrow} c{anti c}, and {r_arrow}b{anti b} events, and found that the results were consistent wi… more

Production of {pi}{sup {plus_minus}}, K{sup {plus_minus}}, p, K{sup 0}{sub s}, {Lambda}{sup 0}, K{sup *0} and {phi} in Hadronic Z{sup 0} Decays

Description: Production rates and momentum distributions have been measured for {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, p, K{sup 0}{sub s}, {Lambda}{sup 0}, K{sup *0} and {phi} in 150,000 hadronic Z{sup 0} decays recorded by the SLD detector at the SLD collider at SLAC. The analysis uses the SLD Cerenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID) for clean and efficient identification of charged tracks and significant background reduction. In addition, K{sup *0} production has been studied in quark and anti-quark jet samples, which… more

Nonperturbative renormalization of QED in light-cone quantization

Description: As a precursor to work on QCD, we study the dressed electron in QED non-perturbatively. The calculational scheme uses an invariant mass cutoff, discretized light cone quantization, a Tamm-Dancoff truncation of the Fock space, and a small photon mass. Nonperturbative renormalization of the coupling and electron mass is developed.

The b{bar b} production cross section and correlations in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV

Description: The authors present measurements of the b{bar b} production cross section and angular correlations between the b and {bar b}-quarks in p{bar p} collisions using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron operating at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. The b-quark production cross section for {vert_bar}y{sup b}{vert_bar} < 1.0 and {rho}{sub {tau}}{sup b} > 8 GeV/c is extracted and found to be consistent with next-to-leading order QCD predictions. In addition, the angular correlations between the b and {bar b}-… more

Design of the NLC positron source

Description: The design of the positron source for the Next Linear Collider (NLC) is presented. The key features of this design include accelerating positrons at an L-band frequency (1428 MHz) and using a rotating positron target with multi-stage differential pumping. Positron yield simulations show that the L-band design yields at the source 2.5 times the beam intensity required at the interaction point and is easily upgrade to higher intensities required for the 1 TeV NLC upgrade. Multi-bunch beam loading… more

Sol-gel deposited electrochromic films for electrochromic smart window glass

Description: Electrochromic windows offer the ability to dynamically change the transmittance of a glazing. With the appropriate sensor and controls, this smart window can be used for energy regulation and glare control for a variety of glazing applications. The most promising are building and automotive applications. This work covers the use of sol-gel deposition processes to make active films for these windows. The sol-gel process offers a low-capital investment for the deposition of these active films. S… more

Higher order beam jitter in the SLC linac

Description: The pulse-to-pulse behavior of the beams in the SLC linac is dominated by wakefields which can amplify any other sources of jitter. A strong focusing lattice combined with BNS damping controls the amplitude of oscillations which otherwise would grow exponentially. Measurements of oscillation amplitude along the linac show beam motion that is up to six times larger than that expected from injection jitter. A search for possible sources of jitter within the linac uncovered some problems such as s… more

Determination of the Z` Mass and Couplings Below Threshold at the NLC

Description: We investigate the capability of the NLC to indirectly determine both the mass as well as the couplings to leptons and b-quarks of a new neutral gauge boson below direct production threshold. By using data collected at several different values of the collide center of mass energy, we demonstrate how this can be done in an anonymous and model- independent manner. The procedure can be easily extended to the top and charm quark couplings.

Carbonate fuel cell monolith design for high power density and low cost

Description: Objective is higher power density operation and cost reduction. This is accomplished by the design of a bipolar plate where the separate corrugated current collectors are eliminated; cost reduction was also derived through higher power density and reduced material usage. The higher volumetric power density operation was achieved through lower cell resistance, increased active component surface area, and reduced cell height.

Global warming and ice ages: I. prospects for physics based modulation of global change

Description: It has been suggested that large-scale climate changes, mostly due to atmospheric injection of greenhouse gases connected with fossil-fired energy production, should be forestalled by internationally-agreed reductions in, e.g., electricity generation. The potential economic impacts of such limitations are obviously large: greater than or equal to $10{sup 11}/year. We propose that for far smaller - less than 1% - the mean thermal effects of greenhouse gases may be obviated in any of several dist… more
