A study to determine the economical tank size for radioactive waste disposal

Description: Purpose of this report is to determine optimum tank size from evaluating the quantities of principal construction materials with prevailing unit costs for various tank sizes. The materials were concrete in-place, reinforcing steel in-place, wood framework, 3/8 in. C steel plate liner in-place, earthwork excavation and backfill (engineering, overhead, piping, condenser, vapor manifold costs not included). Costs of optimum tank are distributed as follows: dome 25%, walls 28%, foundation 6%, floor… more

Reactor Development Quarterly Progress Report. 4000 Program

Description: The status of Experimenial Boiling Water Reactor development is reviewed. Shell testing, control mechanism development, fuel corrosion, and dimensional stability studies, and design consideration to facilitate D/sub 2/O operation are discussed. Fuel plate and subassembly fabrication, corrosion, and radiation damage studies were continued. Reactor water filtration, purification, and induced activity are considered. High-temperaiure operational tests were run on Experimental Breeder Reactor mecha… more

Let-Down System Design for Homogeneous Reactors

Description: A study was made to determine the feasibility of designing a gas let- down system for homogeneous reactors, in which the pressure is taken through a fairly long tube rather than across a throttling valve. A schematic design of such a system is shown for the HRT in which the letdown stream passes through parallel tubes. Control is effected by the cutting in or out of tubes as is needed. Calculations indicate such a design is feasible. It is recommended that experimental work be done before the a… more

Homogeneous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending July 31, 1955

Description: 8 5 6 2 0 5 8 5 5 ? 5 : tion of the HRT is summarized. The design of some reactor components is described, including fuel system line coolers, the thermal shield, instrument cubicles, the reactor cell air monitor, and sampling facilities. The important design specifications for the HRT fissionproduct adsorption system are outlined. The effects of fluid circulation on HRT stability, the results of the rupture of the fuel inlet nozzle on the pressure vessel, core tank temperature, and heat genera… more

Centrifuge for Radiochemical Processing

Description: The feasibility of designing and developlng a canned centrifuge capable of operating for extended periods in a highly radioactive area was investigated. A preliminary design for the entire unit is outlined. It is concluded that such apparatus can be designed and built. Cost estimates are given, and recommended features for incorporation in the centrifuge are listed. (J.R.S.)
