Description: Report presenting an investigation of the effects of a systematic variation of trailing-edge thickness of a symmetrical, circular-arc airfoil on the aerodynamic force, moment, base-pressure, and wake fluctuations using the transonic-bump testing technique. Results regarding the effects of a systematic variation of the trailing-edge thickness, investigation of a boattailed trailing edge, and wake fluctuation characteristics are provided.

Experimental investigation of an axial-flow supersonic compressor having rounded leading-edge blades with an 8-percent mean thickness-chord ratio

Description: Report presenting testing of supersonic compressor blades with rounded leading edges with an 8-percent mean thickness-chord ratio and a solidity of about 2.5 were incorporated in a 16-inch-diameter rotor with and without guide vanes. An Investigation of Continuous Boundary-Layer Removal in an Axial Flow Compressor With Porous Walls

Description: Report presenting an investigation made to improve compressor performance by bleedoff of detrimental boundary layer through a porous compressor casing. The results were compared to the performance characteristics of the original engine. Bleedoff was found to increase the efficiency of the compression process, but the overall performance of the turbojet suffered.

Flow Coefficients for Orifices in Base of Transpiration-Cooled Turbine Rotor Blade

Description: Static tests on a segment of a transpiration-cooled turbine rotor blade with a wire-cloth shell were conducted to determine the flow coefficients associated with some representative metering orifices. Average flow coefficients from 0.96 to 0.79 were obtained for orifices of 0.031 to 0.102 inch diameter.

Tests of Submerged Duct Installation on a Modified Airplane in the Ames 40- by 80-foot Wind Tunnel

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of an NACA submerged intake installation on a modified fighter airplane conducted to determine the full-scale aerodynamic characteristics of this installation. Additionally, tests were conducted on the submerged inlet with revised entrance lips and deflectors to determine the configuration which would result in the best dynamic pressure recovery measured at the inlet for this installation without a major rework of the entrance.

Effects of the Lateral Oscillation of Fixing the Rudder and Reflexing the Flaps on the Bell X-1 Airplane

Description: Memorandum presenting flight tests made on the Bell X-1 airplane with the 10-percent-thick wing and the 8-percent-thick tail to evaluate the effects of fixing the rudder and changing the inclination of the principal axes of inertia. The data were obtained during power-off glides at altitudes between 32,000 and 16,000 feet.

Preliminary flight investigation of the dynamic longitudinal-stability characteristics of a 35 degree swept-wing airplane

Description: Report presenting flight measurements of the dynamic longitudinal-stability characteristics of a 35 degree swept-wing airplane. The results indicated that a sharp reduction in damping at a Mach number of 0.92 with maximum damping occurred at Mach number of 0.88 and 0.94. Results regarding oscillation periods, damping coefficients, scatter, and number of cycles required for oscillations to damp to a certain amplitude are provided.

Wind-tunnel investigation of a 1/6-scale model of the Bumblebee XPM missile at high subsonic speeds

Description: Report presenting the results of an investigation of a model of the Bumblebee XPM missile to determine the causes of booster-fin failures on full-scale missiles. Results indicated that failures of the fins were due to launching shoes which caused the missile to try at increasingly negative angles of attack as the Mach number increased.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of a 1/6-Scale Model of the Bumblebee XPM Missile at High Subsonic Speeds

Description: Report presenting an investigation of a model of the Bumblebee XPM missile to determine the causes of booster-fin failures for a range of Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers. The cause of fin failure was determined to be the launching shoes that caused the missiles to trim at increasingly negative angles of attack. Additional testing with wing spoilers and alternate booster fins was also conducted.
