Microwave Cavity Test for Superconductivity

Description: The first part of this paper describes the Meissner effect in superconductors which serves as the most definitive evidence for superconductivity. It is shown that the microwave perturbation technique may be used to demonstrate this effect. By measuring the changes of resonant frequency and inverse quality factor Q of a microwave cavity with a small volume of sample loading, the Meissner effect can be shown by using the Slater perturbation equation. Description: In this work I present a constructive method for finding critical points of the Ginzburg-Landau energy functional using the method of Sobolev gradients. Novel structural phenomena at the maximum T{sub c} in 123 and HgBa{sub 2}CuO{sub 4+{delta}} superconductors : evidence for a structural response that competes with superconductivity.

Description: Structural distortions that compete with superconductivity have been investigated in two systems where oxygen content can be used to vary the doping continuously from the under doped state, through the maximum T{sub c} into the over doped state. Decay out of the yrast superdeformed band in {sup 191}Hg.

Description: The excitation energies and spins of the yrast superdeformed band in {sup 191}Hg have been determined by analyzing the quasicontinuum spectrum connecting the superdeformed and normal-deformed states. The results from this analysis, combined with that given by one-step decay lines, give confident assignments of the spins and energies of the yrast superdeformed band in {sup 191}Hg.

Superconducting and normal state magnetic properties of RNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C single crystals

Description: The authors` studies of the magnetic properties of RNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C single crystals (R = Y, Gd-Tm, Lu) are reviewed. Of particular interest are the ordered magnetic structures when R is a magnetic rare earth atom, the interaction between magnetism and superconductivity, the influence of crystalline electric fields of the magnetic rare earth ions on these behaviors, and the magnetic character of the Ni sublattice.

Magnetic profile in Nb/Si superconducting multilayers.

Description: Polarized neutron reflectivity measurements were conducted on [Nb(100{angstrom})/Si(15{angstrom})]xN superconducting multilayers with a T{sub c} {approximately} 7.5 K. Theory of the equation of state of hot dense matter

Description: Ab initio molecular dynamics calculations are adapted to treat dense plasmas for temperatures exceeding the electronic Fermi temperature. Imprinted spiral structures as neutron polarizers.

Shock-induced changes in HgO powder

Description: Powder compacts of HgO were subjected to explosively-generated shock-wave loading in Sandia Bear fixtures and recovered for analysis. Although XRD powder spectra show only the orthorhombic form of HgO in both the as-received and recovered samples, XRD line profiles and TEM indicate up to an order of magnitude increase in crystallite size. Techniques for inelastic x-ray scattering with {mu}eV resolution.

Description: We introduce a novel type of spectrometer that provides a {micro}eV bandpass together with a tunability over a few meV. The technique relies on nuclear resonant scattering (Moessbauer effect) of synchrotrons radiation at the 14.4-keV resonance of {sup 57}Fe.
