Concept for a third generation ECR source at LBL

Description: Although the Advanced Electron Cyclotron Resonance ion source has produced record high charge state beams and is now in operation with the 88-Inch Cyclotron, development of a third generation ECR source could provide major new research opportunities at the 88-Inch Cyclotron. Higher intensities for particles with mass greater than 150 and energies above the Coulomb barrier would improve experiments using deep inelastic reactions to produce neutron rich compound nuclei that can be studied with th… more

Spontaneous quenches of a high temperature superconducting pancake coil

Description: A double-pancake coil made of Bi-2223/Ag high temperature superconducting (HTS) tape was constructed with an embedded heater and graded conductors to study the stability and quench propagation in HTS coils. The experiments were performed with liquid nitrogen and gaseous helium cooling in temperatures ranging from 5 to 77 K. The coil was very stable, and no ``normal`` zone was sustained or propagated with local pulsed heating. However, spontaneous quenches of the cod were experienced. This was f… more

The cryogenic helium cooling system for the Tokamak physics experiment

Description: The Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX) will use supercritical helium to cool all the magnets and supply helium to the Vacuum cryopumping subsystem. The heat loads will come from the standard steady state conduction and thermal radiation sources and from the pulsed loads of the nuclear and eddy currents caused by the Central Solenoid Coils and the plasma positioning coils. The operations of the TPX will begin with pulses of up to 1000 seconds in duration every 75 minutes. The helium system utilize… more

Coil end design for the LHC dipole magnet

Description: This paper describes the design of the coil ends for the Large Hadron Collider dipole magnets of the CERN European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Switzerland. This alternative to existing European designs was provided by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory by agreement between CERN and the United States. The superconducting cable paths are determined from both magnetic and mechanical considerations. The coil end parts used to shape and constrain the conductors in the coil ends are designe… more

Bootstrap current in enhanced reversed shear tokamaks for volume neutron source applications

Description: The bootstrap current is evaluated for two reference tokamak designs for a Volume Neutron Source (VNS). One is a larger aspect ratio design using superconducting coils (VNS-SC) and the other is a small aspect ratio design using a solid core with normal conducting toroidal field coils (VNS-ST). The target plasma profiles are taken as representative of the recently observed enhanced reverse shear plasmas with hollow magnetic safety factor (q) profiles in the core and corresponding peaked density … more

Tokamak Physics EXperiment (TPX): Toroidal magnet design, development and manufacture. SDRL 31, Magnet sensors. Volume 4

Description: The requirement for magnet sensors to verify the TF magnet system operation and aid in diagnostic assessment are defined. However, generally one does not specify such a system in the absence of a definition of the local I&C system. Also, one would expect that there would be great benefit (economy, redundancy, compatibility, etc.) in specifying common components for all of the magnet system. Thus specifying the sensors requirement we have tried to be flexible to accommodate future adjustments to… more

The conducting shell stellarator: A simple means for producing complicated fields

Description: One of the main characteristics of stellarators, both helical and modular, is that their coil sets must take difficult shapes in order to produce the complicated stellarator magnetic fields. The complex coil shapes make fabrication difficult and costly compared to say the toroidal field, TF, coil set of a tokamak. The conducting shell stellarator, CSS, configuration described in this report shows that complicated stellarator fields can be produced by inducing eddy currents in a conducting shell… more

Magnetic fusion commercial power plants

Description: Toroidal magnetic systems present the best opportunity to make a commercial fusion power plant. They offer potential solutions to the main requirements that confront a power plant designer. An ideal system may be postulated in which the coils are a very small part of the cost, and the cost stems primarily from the inescapable components: minimal plasma heating (and sustaining system), tritium breeding blanket, shield, particle input, removal and treatment system, heat transfer system, generator… more

Processing and properties of long-lengths of Ag-clad BSCCO superconductors and high-{Tc} magnets

Description: Long lengths of Ag-clad mono and multicore BSCCO tapes were fabricated by the powder-in-tube technique. The critical current density (J{sub c}) of 125-m-long monocore tapes was {approx}12,000 A/cm{sup 2} (critical current, I{sub c} 20 A) at 77 K. A 230-m-long 37-filament tape carried an I{sub c} of 14 A (corresponding to a J{sub c} of {approx}10,000 A/cm{sup 2}). Pancake-shaped coils were formed from long-length conductors by the wind-and-react approach. High-T{sub c} magnets were then assemble… more

Performance of coils wound from long lengths of surface-coated, reacted, BSCCO-2212 conductor

Description: React-before-wind surface-coated BSCCO-2212 is being established as a relatively low cost HTS conductor for practical applications. Quality tape is presently being manufactured in 450-500m lengths at a cost estimated to be 1/3-1/5 of the industry costs of BSCCO-2223 powder-in-tube tape. Robust, mechanically sound coils for applications ranging from NMR insert magnets to transformer windings are being made from this BSCCO-2212 tape. The coils have performed consistently through test and thermal … more

The crystallography of fatigue crack initiation in Incoloy-908 and A-286 steel

Description: Fatigue crack initiation in the austenitic Fe-Ni superalloys Incoloy-908 and A-286 is examined using local crystallographic orientation measurements. Results are consistent with sharp transgranular initiation and propagation occurring almost exclusively on {l_brace}111{r_brace} planes in Incoloy-908 but on a variety of low index planes in A-286. This difference is attributed to the influence of the semicoherent grain boundary {eta} phase in A-286. Initiation in each alloy occurred both intergra… more
