Interaction of impurity ions with a weakly non-Maxwellian simple hydrogenic plasma. [None]

Description: The average acceleration of an ensemble of /open quotes/test particles/close quotes/ in a plasma is called the /open quotes/dynamical friction/close quotes/; the average rate at which their velocity vectors spread out in velocity-space diffusion-rate tensor. These quantities are derived for impurity ions intereacting with a weakly non-Maxwellian simple hydrogenic plasma. The distribution functions for the plasma ions and electrons are written explicitly.

IPFR: Integrated Pool Fusion Reactor concept

Description: The IPFR (Integrated Pool Fusion Reactor) concept is to place a fusion reactor into a pool of molten Flibe. The Flibe will serve the multiple functions of breeding, cooling, shielding, and moderating. Therefore, the only structural material between the superconducting magnets and the plasma is the first wall. The first wall is a stand-alone structure with no coolant connection and is cooled by Flibe at the atmospheric pressure. There is also no need of the primary coolant loop. The design is ex… more

Fusion blanket inherent safety assessment

Description: The inherent safety aspect of TPSS reactor blankets has been investigated. The idea is to design the blanket so safe that cost savings can be realized such as through non-nuclear grading construction. If the blanket materials are carefully selected, inherent safety is feasible for fusion reactor blankets up to 5 to 10 MW/m/sup 2/ neutron wall loading.

Fast wave current drive: Experimental status and reactor prospects

Description: The fast wave is one of the two possible wave polarizations which propagate according to the basic theory of cold plasmas. It is distinguished from the other (slow wave) branch by having an electric field vector which is mainly orthogonal to the confining magnetic field of the plasma. The plasma and fast wave qualitatively assume different behavior depending on the frequency range of the launched wave. The high frequency fast wave (HFFW), with a frequency (..omega..2..pi.. )approximately) GHz) … more

Tritium system for a tokamak reactor with a self-pumped limiter

Description: The self-pumping concept was proposed as a means of simplifying the impurity control system in a fusion reactor. The idea is to remove helium in-situ by trapping in freshly deposited metal surface layers of a limiter or divertor. Trapping material is added to the plasma scrape-off or edge region where it is transported to the wall. Some of the key issues for this concept are the tritium inventory in the trapping material and the permeation of protium and recycling of tritium. These quantities a… more

Application of high temperature ceramic superconductors (CSC) to commercial tokamak reactors

Description: Ceramic superconductors operating near liquid nitrogen temperature may experience higher heating rates without losing stability, compared to conventional superconductors. This will permit cable design with less stabilizer, reducing fabrication costs for large fusion magnets. Magnet performance is studied for different operating current densities in the superconductor, and cost benefits to commercial tokamak reactors are estimated. It appears that 10 kA . cm/sup -2/ (at 77 K and approx.10 T) is … more

Erosion/redeposition analysis of the ITER (International Tokamak Engineering Reactor) divertor

Description: Sputtering erosion of the proposed ITER divertor has been analyzed using the REDEP computer code. A carbon coated plate at medium and low plasma edge temperatures, as well as beryllium and tungsten plates, have been examined. Peak net erosion rates for C and Be are very high (/approximately/20--80 cm/burn/center dot/yr) though an order of magnitude less than the gross rates. Tritium buildup rates in codeposited carbon surface layers may also be high (/approximately/50--250 kg/burn/center dot/yr… more

A method for determining poloidal coil configurations for tokamak devices

Description: This paper presents a method for obtaining the locations and currents of the poloidal coil systems for a tokamak, given an desirable magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium for the device. The method involves a simultaneous minimization of the match to the desired poloidal field and the stored energy in the coils, subject to the constraints necessary to achieve decoupling of the equilibrium and inductive-current-drive (ohmic-heating) systems and to achieve a given coupling of the current-drive system w… more

Summary of mechanical properties data and correlations for Li/sub 2/O, Li/sub 4/SiO/sub 4/, LiAlO/sub 2/, and Be

Description: The data base for thermal expansion, elastic constants, compressive and tensile failure strengths and secondary thermal creep of leading solid-breeder (Li/sub 2/O, Li/sub 4/SiO/sub 4/, and LiAlO/sub 2/) and multiplier (Be) materials is reviewed, porosity, grain size, and stress (for thermal creep). Because the data base is rather sparse in some areas, general properties of ceramics and metals are used to help guide the formulation of the correlations. The primary purpose of the data base summar… more

Neoclassical effects on rf current drive

Description: A functional form is derived for the efficiency of current drive in toroidal geometry with low frequency waves (frequencies below the electron cyclotron frequency). By fitting constants in order to duplicate numerical results for the efficiency we obtain an accurate function which will be useful for computer calculations of current drive. 13 refs., 6 figs.

International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) divertor plate performance and lifetime considerations

Description: The ITER divertor plate performance during the technology phase of operation has been analyzed. High-Z materials, such as tungsten and tantalum, have been considered as plasma side materials, and refractory metal alloys, Ta-10W, TZM, Nb-1Zr, and V-15Cr-5Ti, plus copper alloys have been considered as the structural materials. The fatigue lifetime have been predicted for structural plates and for duplex plates with the plasma side material bonded to the structure. The results indicate that refrac… more

Volume estimate of radium-contaminated soil in a section of Barrows Field Park, Glen Ridge, New Jersey, November--December 1989

Description: The objective of this project was to estimate the in-place volume of radium-contaminated soil in an area of Barrows Field Park, Glen Ridge, New Jersey. The information was necessary to determine whether or not there was sufficient soil with the proper radium concentration to test a new method of soil decontamination. The steps used by Argonne National Laboratory personnel to obtain the required data for estimating the volume of contaminated soil was to measure the contamination-depth profile at… more

Three-dimensional MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) flows in rectangular ducts of liquid-metal-cooled blankets

Description: Magnetohydrodynamic flows of liquid metals in rectangular ducts with thin conducting walls in the presence of strong nonuniform transverse magnetic fields are examined. The interaction parameter and Hartmann number are assumed to be large, whereas the magnetic Reynolds number is assumed to be small. Under these assumptions, viscous and inertial effects are confined in very thin boundary layers adjacent to the walls. A significant fraction of the fluid flow is concentrated in the boundary layers… more

Liquid metal flow in a large-radius elbow with a uniform magnetic fluid

Description: This paper treats the liquid-metal flow in an elbow between two straight, rectangular ducts. There is a uniform magnetic field in the plane of the elbow. The duct has thin, electrically conducting walls. The Hartmann number and the interaction parameter are assumed to be large, while the magnetic Reynolds number is assumed to be small. Solutions for the velocity at each cross section of the elbow and for the pressure drop due to three-dimensional effects are presented. 10 refs., 5 figs.

Bootstrap currents in radio-frequency-driven tokamak equilibria

Description: Interest in the bootstrap current arising from neoclassical transport in tokamaks has increased recently in view of certain experimental observations. In this study, the bootstrap current is calculated for a number of rf current-driven tokamaks. Two-dimensional, self-consistent, steady-state tokamak MHD equilibria are obtained by including both the transport-driven bootstrap current and the externally driven rf current. The self-consistency is acomplished by iterating between two-dimensional MH… more
