Operation of the NuMI beam monitoring system

Description: The NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) facility produces an intense neutrino beam for experiments. The NuMI Beam Monitoring system is four arrays of ion chambers that measure the intensity and distribution of the remnant hadron and tertiary muon beams produced in association with the neutrinos. The ion chambers operate in an environment of high particle fluxes and high radiation.

Improved Limits on the Lepton Flavor Violating Decays Tau -> l V^0

Description: The authors search for the neutrinoless, lepton-flavor-violating tau decays {tau}{sup -} {yields} {ell}{sup -}V{sup 0}, where {ell} is an electron or muon and V{sup 0} is a fector meson reconstructed as {phi} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}, {rho} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, K* {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, {bar K}* {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}. The analysis has been performed using 451 fb{sup -1} of data collected at an e{sup +}e{sup -} center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV with the BABAR detect… more

K+ p Multiparticle Production in the 30" NAL Hybrid Chamber at the Highest Possible Energy

Description: One of the unique features of NAL that cannot be duplicated elsewhere (i.e. at CERN-ISR) is the ability to make high energy neutrino beams and high energy meson beams, It appears that meson-proton interactions may have given us some insight into hadron structure because the asymmetry (2 quarks on 3) which one observes in them cannot be seen in proton-proton (3 quarks on 3) interactions. Although the asymmetry can be observed in {pi} p collisions, it is likely that more can be learned if the rol… more

Observation of the decay B0bar -> LambdaC antiproton pi0

Description: In a sample of 467 million B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider at SLAC we have observed the decay {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}{pi}{sup 0} and measured the branching fraction to be (1.94 {+-} 0.17 {+-} 0.14 {+-} 0.50) x 10{sup -4}, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and the uncertainty on the {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} {yields} pK{sup -}{pi}{sup +} branching fraction, respectively. We determine an upper limit of 1.5 x 10{… more

Search for Electromagnetic Production of Fractionally Charged Particles at NAL

Description: One of the most important investigations to be conducted during the early operation of NAL is the search for quarks. Several experiments have been proposed which will investigate quark production via the strong interaction. As we discuss below, however, there are serious arguments to suggest that the mass limits obtained will not be significantly higher than the current limits of 4 to 5 GeV. To circumvent these objections we propose a simple experiment based on e1ectromagnetic production of qua… more

Measurement of the sigma^o Lifetime

Description: The Coulomb production of {Sigma}{sup 0} hyperons on uranium and nickel nuclei has been measured in a beam of {Lambda} hyperons at the CERN Proton Synchrotron. The results for the {Sigma}{sup 0} lifetime, {tau}{Sigma}{sup 0} = (0.58 {+-} 0.13) x 10{sup -19} sec, and for the {Sigma}{sup 0}-{Lambda} magnetic transition moment, |{mu}{Sigma}{sub {Lambda}}| = (1.82{sub -0.18}{sup +0.25}) nuclear magnetons, are in agreement with SU(3) predictions.

Study of the decay asymmetry parameter and CP violation parameter in the Lambda(c)+ ---> Lambda pi+ decay

Description: Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present a new measurement of the weak decay-asymmetry parameter a{sub {Lambda}{sub c}} in {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} {yields} {Lambda}{pi}{sup +} decay. Comparing particle with antiparticle decays, we obtain the first measurement of the CP violation parameter {Alpha} {triple_bond} a{sub {Lambda}{sub c}} + a{sub {ovr {Lambda}{sub c}}}/a{sub {Lambda}{sub c}} - a{sub {ovr {Lambda}{sub c}}}. We obtain a{sub {Lambda}{sub c}} = -0.78 {+-} 0.16 {… more

A Measurement of the K0 charge radius and a CP violating asymmetry together with a search for CP violating e1 direct photon emission in the rare decay K(L) ---> pi+ pi- e+ e-

Description: Using the complete KTeV data set of 5241 candidate K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}e{sup +}e{sup -} decays (including an estimated background of 204 {+-} 14 events), we have measured the coupling g{sub CR} = 0.163 {+-} 0.014 (stat) {+-} 0.023 (syst) of the CP conserving charge radius process and from it determined a K{sup 0} charge radius of <r{sub K{sup 0}}{sup 2}> = (-0.077 {+-} 0.007(stat) {+-} 0.011(syst))fm{sup 2}. Study of the D0 ---> K+ K- pi+ pi-

Description: Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, the authors present a new measurement for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}. They measure: {Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -})/{Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}) = 0.0295 {+-} 0.0011 {+-} 0.0008. Measurement of the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay D0 ---> K+ pi- and a search for charm mixing

Description: The authors present an analysis of the decay D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -} based on FOCUS data. From a sample of 234 signal events, they find a branching ratio of {Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -})/{Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}) = (0.429{sub -0.061}{sup +0-.063} {+-} 0.027)% under the assumptions of no mixing and no CP violation. Allowing for CP violation, the find a branching ratio of (0.435{sub -0.061}{sup +0.063} {+-} 0.028)% and a CP asymmetry of 0.178{… more

A Non-parametric approach to the D+ ---> anti-K*0 mu+ nu form-factors

Description: Using a large sample of D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -} {pi}{sup +} {mu}{sup +}{nu} decays collected by the FOCUS photo-production experiment at Fermilab, we present the first measurements of the helicity basis form factors free from the assumption of spectroscopic pole dominance. We also present the first information on the form factor that controls the s-wave interference discussed in a previous paper by the FOCUS collaboration. We find reasonable agreement with the usual assumption of spectroscop… more
