Optimization of cobalt-60 production in the Hanford Testing facilities

Description: The longitudinal (axial) flux distribution in the Hanford production reactors quite closely approximates a ``chopped`` cosine. Consequently, any longitudinally uniform charge placed in a reactor will produce a daughter product with a specific activity distribution which also approximates a cosine. Such a distribution has an average-to-maximum specific activity of about 0.7 and is not desirable when product uniformity is required.

Richland five-year O2 R and D Program: High enriched fuel program

Description: As the military needs for plutonium decline, the Commission`s production-oriented reactor complex should develop and demonstrate pure non-defense operating modes to serve non-defense needs. The alternative is production reactor shutdowns coupled with needless expense in producing necessary products elsewhere or doing without them. Although the use of fully enriched fuel (partial or complete loadings) for the Richland production reactors was once practiced, renewed study and research to reestabl… more

Rotating electric field sensor for nondestructive evaluation of nonmetallic engineered components

Description: Improvements in performance of products with nonmetallic engineered materials are obtained at the cost of increased complexity of product design, manufacture, and maintenance. NDE (nondestructive evaluation) techniques have been developed for verifying design models, identifying manufacturing flaws, and assessing service-related damage. This project involved developing a new NDE method that provides additional information; the sensor measures changes in an imposed electric field to obtain elect… more

Richland five-year 02 R&D program: Co-60 Program

Description: This Cobalt 60 program is part of the Richland five year 02 R&D program. Topics discussed in this summary include incentives, scope and objectives, progress during report period, budget period plans, and an evaluation of progress against plans and objectives. Progress has reasonably paralleled expected results in that megacurie quantities of Co-60 have been secured with activities of 20--60 curies per gram by January 1966 and 100 curies per gram by July 1967.

Production test IP-750 raw water as a reactor coolant. Final report

Description: Approximately ten years ago single-tube tests demonstrated the feasibility of using unfiltered river water as a reactor coolant from the standpoint of aluminum corrosion and film formation. However, some effluent activity penalty was indicated. Inasmuch as both current water plant operation and the characteristics of Columbia River water have changed, it was deemed appropriate to reinvestigate the use of partially treated water as a reactor coolant. This report summarizes the results of a half-… more

Richland five-year O2 R and D Program: Nuclear safety program

Description: The Nuclear Safety Mission consists of a broad, integrated program of experimental and analytical studies designed to permit more accurate assessment of the consequences of accidents at Hanford nuclear facilities. Information obtained will assist in the design of facilities to further mitigate the consequences of accidents involving the release of radioactive materials from the Hanford nuclear reactors and chemical processing facilities. The Safety Mission consists of seven programs described b… more

Project Payette

Description: This is the concept for Project Payette, a nuclear event in the Seismic Detection Research Program. For this experiment, a nuclear explosive in the range of 5 to 10 kt will be detonated at a depth of 2000 to 3000 ft in an underground cavity of sufficient size that the walls of the cavity experience only elastic motion. The site will be located in a salt dome. Project Payette has been divided into three phases. Phase I will include site evaluation and engineering design of the construction of th… more

Joint Chiefs of Staff: Notes

Description: The purpose of the paper is to state the rationale upon which the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) bases its opposition to further extension of the Limited Test Ban Treaty (LTBT). The argumentation of the paper is hinged primarily on the contention that the USSR is ahead of the US in nuclear weapon technology. Accordingly, there is much for the US to do, so that the Soviets do not, primarily through the deployment of an Anti-Ballistic Missile [ABM] system, alter the strategic balanc the US should no… more

Seismic induced architectural damage to masonry structures at Mercury, Nevada

Description: Selected masonry structures in Mercury, Nevada, were inspected for cracking before and after certain nuclear detonations and during periods of no significant nuclear activity. Detonations gave peak particle velocities whose magnitudes approached those experienced in Mississippi during the Salmon event. Findings include evidence that peak particle velocities of 0. 1 to 0. 3 cm/sec caused more cracking than normal; however, cracks at these low levels of motion are not more severe than those occur… more
