The Identification and Determination of Trace Amounts of Rare Earth Elements in Graphite by Neutron Activation

Description: Abstract: "A method is described for the identification and quantitative determination of trace amounts of rare earths in graphite by measurement of the energies and decays of the activities induced by neutron irradiation. The specific rare earth elements identified are europium and samarium. During the development of this method, the half-lives of Eu-152 and Sm-153 were determined. These are reported as 9.32 +/- 0.04 hours and 46.34 +/- 0.23 respectively."

Stepwise Calculation for the Determination of the Number of Transfer Units in Countercurrent Extraction Columns

Description: Report discussing a method for the stepwise calculation of the number of transfer units utilized in a given solvent extraction operation. "Use of the method results in a very appreciable saving in time of calculation with an error of 1.5% for the runs tested. The error tends to become smaller with increasing total numbers of transfer units involved."

Boron stainless steel for drop rods

Description: From introduction: "The present investigation of the properties of boron stainless steel is an outgrowth of a project started in 1947. The problem is to replace the present steel used for drop rods in the Hanford piles with a material much less subject to corrosive attack from the humid atmosphere existing at the location of the rods."

The Solubility of Uranyl Oxalate and the Existence of Undissociated Uranyl Oxalate in Solution

Description: Abstract: "The solubility of the solid, UO2C2O4 x rH2O, was measured at various acid and uranyl nitrate concentrations. The results of the measurements prove the existence of the uranyl oxalate complex - UO2C2O4, in solutions containing excess UO2^2."

Corrosivity of Uranyl Fluoride to Certain Metals

Description: Abstract: "The results obtained from the tests conducted for the purpose of determining the corrosivity of a 30 percent-solution of uranyl fluoride to various metals indicate that stainless steels (type 302, 304, 321 and 316) have very good resistance; while monel, nickel and aluminum, respectively, exhibit diminishing resistance. Stainless steel, type 316, was the most resistant of the specimen tested."

Investigation of Cementitious Materials for Possible Use in Concretes for Pile Shielding

Description: From introduction: "The present report reviews the work conducted on the development of new cements other than magnesium oxychloride during the period from August, 1943, to October 1949. As in the previous reports, the total water contents reported represent the hydrogen combined as water and that which may be combined as a compound other than water."

Preparation of Ductile Zirconium: Summary of Thermodynamic Data

Description: Abstract: A summary of thermodynamic calculations for zirconium halides is given. Data indicates that the iodide is the most promising of the halides for arc dissociation and that good recoveries of zirconium should be obtainable provided dissociation is carried out at reduced pressure.

The Production of Beryllium by the Metallothermic Reduction of Beryllium Fluoride

Description: Report discussing "the production of beryllium by the metallothermic reduction of its fluoride...Charges of BaF2 and Mg reacted smoothly when heated by induction in graphite crucibles and on continued heating the metal and slag separated fairly well. It was found that an addition of CaCl2 to the top of the charge facilitated the separation a great deal. Very clean, massive metal has been produced by this procedure."
