Geophysical Exploration on the Structure of Volcanoes: Two Case Histories

Description: Geophysical methods of exploration were used to determine the internal structure of Koolau Volcano in Hawaii and of Rabaul Volcano in New Guinea. By use of gravity and seismic data the central vent or plug of Koolau Volcano was outlined. Magnetic data seem to indicate that the central plug is still above the Curie Point. If so, the amount of heat energy available is tremendous. As for Rabaul Volcano, it is located in a region characterized by numerous block faulting. The volcano is only a part … more

Imagery from Infrared Scanning of the East and Southwest Rift Zones of Kilauea and the Lower Portion of the Southwest Rift Zone of Mauna Loa, Island of Hawaii

Description: From July 31 through August 4, 1973 night time flights for obtaining infrared imagery along the east and southwest rift zones of Kilauea and the southwest rift zone of Mauna Loa were undertaken on the island of Hawaii. Flights were also made on Hualalai and Kohala volcanoes but because of inconclusive results, they are not included in this report. Ground control stations had been established during daylight hours several days prior to starting the flight program. Students stationed at the groun… more

Repair of human DNA: radiation chemical damage in normal and xeroderma pigmentosum cells

Description: The photolysis of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) incorporated during repair was used for the assay of DNA repair in human cells. This assay supplies a characterization of the sequence of repair events that occur in human cells after radiation exposure, both ultraviolet and ionizing, and permits an estimation of the size of the average repaired region after these physical insults to DNA. Chemical insults to DNA are discussed and an attempt is made to liken the repair processes after chemical damages… more

Foci of Volcanoes

Description: One may assume a center of volcanic activities beneath the edifice of an active volcano, which is here called the focus of the volcano. Sometimes it may be a ''magma reservoir''. Its depth may differ with types of magma and change with time. In this paper, foci of volcanoes are discussed from the viewpoints of four items: (1) Geomagnetic changes related with volcanic activities; (2) Crustal deformations related with volcanic activities; (3) Magma transfer through volcanoes; and (4) Subsurface s… more

Seismic Noise Surveys in Geothermal Areas

Description: Some evidence suggests that high seismic noise levels are associated with geothermal systems. Clacy (1968) and Whiteford (1970) found that large seismic amplitudes, in the frequency range of 1-10 Hz, occur in the vicinity of known geothermal areas in the North Island of New Zealand. In Imperial Valley, California, Goforth, Douze and Sorrells (1972) found a seismic noise anomaly that nearly coincides with a thermal anomaly near the southeastern shore of Salton Sea, and Douze and Sorrells (1972) … more
