Search for rare b-meson decays at CDF

Description: We report on the search for B{sup 0}{sub s}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}, B{sup 0}{sub d}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} decays and b{yields} s{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} transitions in exclusive decays of B mesons using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Using 2 fb{sup -1} of Run II data we find upper limits on the branching fractions {beta}(B{sup 0}{sub s}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -})<5.8 x 10{sup -8} and {beta}(B{sup 0}{sub d}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -})<1.8 x 10{sup -8} at 95% confidence level. The results for the branching fractions of the b{yields} s{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} transitions using 924 pb{sup -1} of Run II data are {beta}(B{sup +}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}K{sup +})=(0.60{+-}0.15{+-}0.04) x 10{sup -6}, {beta}(B{sup 0}{sub d}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}K{sup *0})=(0.82{+-}0.31{+-}0.10) x 10{sup -6} and {beta}(B{sup 0}{sub s}{yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}{phi})/{beta}(B{sup 0}{sub s}{yields}J/{psi}{phi}) < 2.61 x 10{sup -3} at 95% confidence level.

New Measurements of the Angle Gamma at the BabarExperiment

Description: Measuring the angle {gamma} is an important part of over-constraining the Unitarity Triangle to test Standard Model predictions. There are a number of methods to measure {gamma}, and we present results on the progress made in measuring {gamma} with B meson decays, using data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider at SLAC.

The Search for B+ to Tau+ Nu(Tau) at BaBar

Description: We present a search for the decay B{sup +} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{nu}{sub {tau}} using 288 fb{sup -1} of data collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II B-Factory. A sample of events with one reconstructed semileptonic B decay (B{sup -} {yields} D{sup o}{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}}X) is selected, and in the recoil a search for B{sup +} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{nu}{sub {tau}} signal is performed. The {tau} is identified in the following channels: {tau}{sup +} {yields} e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}{bar {nu}}{sub {tau}}, {tau}{sup +} {yields} {mu}{sup +} {nu}{sub {mu}}{bar {nu}}{sub {tau}}, {tau}{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup 0}{bar {nu}}{sub {tau}}. We measure a branching fraction of {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{nu}{sub {tau}}) = 0.88{sub -0.67}{sup +0.68}(stat.) {+-} 0.11(syst.) x 10{sup -4} and extract an upper limit on the branching fraction, at the 90% confidence level, of {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{nu}{sub {tau}}) < 1.8 x 10{sup -4}. We calculate the product of the B meson decay constant and |V{sub ub}| to be f{sub B} {center_dot} |V{sub ub}| = (7.0{sub -3.6}{sup +2.3}(stat.){sub -0.5}{sup +0.4}(syst.)) x 10{sup -4} GeV.

Review of Exculsive B to D(*,**)Lnu Decays: Branching Fractions, Form-Factors And |V(Cb|

Description: This paper reviews semileptonic decays of B-mesons to states containing charm mesons, i.e., D, D*, D** and possible non-resonant D{sup (*)}{eta}{pi} states as well. The paper covers measurement of branching fractions, form-factors and, most importantly, the magnitude of the CKM matrix element V{sub cb}. I will not attempt a comprehensive review, but will concentrate on reasonably fresh results and consider mostly exclusive measurements. I will also comment on the consistency of the results and what needs to be done to resolve the apparent conflicts.

Hadronic B Decays at BaBar

Description: By means of hadronic B decays, the BABAR experiment aims to constrain the CKM matrix performing CP parameter measurements. It also seeks to test QCD factorization predictions and other models for B structure and decay mechanisms. We will present some of the on-going CP related analyses in the first section, while the second section will be dedicated to report on the conducted investigations on subjects as diverse as probing the gluon component in the B meson wave function, new physics and final state interactions in annihilation processes, intrinsic charm searches and first observation of strange charmed baryon production in B decays.

Measurements of the CKM Angle phi3/gamma

Description: We present a review on the measurements of the CKM angle {gamma} ({phi}{sub 3}){sup 1} as performed by the BABAR and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} B factories colliders PEP-II and KEKB. These measurements are using either charged or neutral B decays. For charged B decays the modes {tilde D}{sup 0}K{sup -}, {tilde D}*{sup 0}K{sup -}, and {tilde D}{sup 0}K*{sup -} are employed, where {tilde D}{sup 0} indicates either a D{sup 0} or a {bar D}{sup 0} meson. Direct CP violation is exploited. It is caused by interferences between V{sub ub} and V{sub cb} accessible transitions that generate asymmetries in the final states. For these decays various methods exist to enhance the sensitivity to the V{sub ub} transition, carrying the weak phase {gamma}. For neutral B decays, the modes D{sup (*){+-}}{pi}{sup {-+}} and D{sup {+-}}{rho}{sup {-+}} are used. In addition to the V{sub ub} and V{sub cb} interferences, these modes are sensitive to the B{sup 0}-{bar B}{sup 0} mixing, so that time dependent analyses are performed to extract sin(2{beta} + {gamma}). An alternative method would use the lower branching ratios decay modes {tilde D}{sup (*)0}{bar K}{sup (*)0} where much larger asymmetries are expected. The various available methods are mostly ''theoretically clean'' and always free of penguins diagrams. In some cases a high sensitivity to {gamma} is expected and large asymmetries may be seen. But these measurements are always experimentally difficult as one has to face with either low branching ratios, or small asymmetries, or additional technical/theoretical difficulties due to Dalitz/SU(3) and re-scattering models needed to treat/estimate nuisance parameters such as unknown strong phases and the relative magnitude of the amplitude of the interfering ''V{sub ub}'' transitions. CP Violation in B Mesons

Description: Symmetries and their conservation laws play a fundamental role in Physics. Among them, the discrete symmetries corresponding to charge (C), parity (P), and time (T) transformations are extensively used in the theory of the elementary particles and their interactions (so called Standard Model (SM)) to give the basis of the fundamental physical description of nature. Eventual discoveries of violations of these symmetries become a crucial test for our understanding of the nature. It was assumed that the three discrete symmetries were not violated until 1956 when it was found that P is violated in the weak interaction. Soon it was understood that also the C is violated in the weak interaction. At that time these two violated symmetries were replaced by their combination, CP, which was considered a new fundamental symmetry. In 1964 also the CP was found violated in the case of the neutral K meson system. Since that year there were many achievements in theories and experiments in order to explain this symmetry violation. In the last five years the main contribution comes from the discovery of the CP violation in B meson system. In this note we will describe briefly how the CP violation is described in the SM and the main experimental results obtained in the B mesons system.

A Monte Carlo Study of the Momentum Dependence on the Results of Tracking Unknown Particle Species in the BaBar Detector

Description: The BABAR experiment is composed of an international collaboration that will test the Standard Model prediction of CP violation. To accomplish this a new detector was constructed at the asymmetric B Factory, located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The tests will shed some light on the origins of CP violation, which is an important aspect in explaining the matter/antimatter asymmetry in the universe. In particular, the BABAR experiment will measure CP violation in the neutral B meson system. In order to succeed, the BABAR experiment requires excellent track fitting and particle species identification. Prior to the current study, track fitting was done using only one particle species--the pion. But given the momentum dependence on the accuracy of the results from this choice of particle species, a better algorithm needed to be developed. Monte Carlo simulations were carried out and a new algorithm utilizing all five particle species present in the BABAR detector was created.

Measurement of Decay Amplitudes of B to (ccbar) K^* withan Angular Analysis, for (ccbar)=J/Psi,Psi(2S) and Chi_c1

Description: The authors perform the first three-dimensional measurement of the amplitudes of B {yields} {psi}(2S)K* and B {yields} {chi}{sub c1}K* decays and update the previous measurement B {yields} J/{psi}K*. They use a data sample collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring, corresponding to 232 million B{bar B} pairs. The longitudinal polarization of decays involving a J{sup PC} = 1{sup ++} {chi}{sub c1} meson is found to be larger than that with a 1{sup --} J/{psi} or {psi}(2S) meson. No direct CP-violating charge asymmetry is observed.

B^0 to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0Time Dependent Dalitz Analysis at BaBar

Description: The author presents here results of a time-dependent analysis of the Dalitz structure of neutral B meson decays to {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0} from a dataset of 346 million B{bar B} pairs collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) center of mass energy by the BaBar detector at the SLAC PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} accelerator. No significant CP violation effects are observed and 68% confidence interval is derived on the weak angle {alpha} to be [75,152].

Search for the rare decay B to pi l+ l-

Description: The authors have performed a search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decays B {yields} {pi}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}, where {ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} is either e{sup +}e{sup -} or {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}, using a sample of 230 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector. They observe no evidence of a signal and measure the upper limit on the isospin-averaged branching fraction to be {Beta}(B {yields} {pi}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}) < 9.1 x 10{sup -8} at 90% confidence level. They also search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays B {yields} {pi}e{sup {+-}} {mu}{sup {-+}} and measure an upper limit on the isospin-averaged branching fraction of {Beta}(B {yields} {pi}e{sup {+-}} {mu}{sup {-+}}) < 9.2 x 10{sup -8} at 90% confidence level.

Status of SM Calculations of b to s Transitions

Description: We report recent progress in SM calculations of b {yields} s transitions. We discuss the first NNLL prediction of the {bar B} {yields} X{sub s}{gamma} branching ratio, including important additional subtleties due to non-perturbative corrections and logarithmically-enhanced cut effects, and also recent results on the inclusive mode {bar B} {yields} X{sub s}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}. Moreover, new results on the corresponding exclusive modes are reviewed. Finally, we comment on the present status of the so-called B {yields} K{pi} puzzle in hadronic b {yields} s transitions.

Study of Rare B Meson Decays Related to the CKM Angle Beta at BaBar

Description: This study reports measurements of the branching fractions of B meson decays to {eta}{prime}K{sup +}, {eta}{prime}K{sup 0}, {omega}{pi}{sup +}, {omega}K{sup +}, and {omega}K{sup 0}. Charge asymmetries are measured for the charged modes and the time-dependent CP-violation parameters S and C are measured for the neutral modes. The results are based on a data sample of 347 fb{sup -1} containing 383 million B{bar B} pairs recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- storage ring located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Statistically significant signals are observed for all channels with the following results: B(B{sup +} {yields} {eta}{prime}K{sup +}) = (70.0{+-}1.5{+-}2.8)x10{sup -6}, B(B{sup 0} {yields} {eta}{prime}K{sup 0}) = (66.6{+-}2.6{+-}2.8)x10{sup -6}, B(B{sup +} {yields} {omega}{pi}{sup +}) = (6.7{+-}0.5{+-}0.4)x10{sup -6}, B(B{sup +} {yields} {omega}K{sup +}) = (6.3{+-}0.5{+-}0.3)x10-6, and B(B{sup 0} {yields} ?K0) = (5.6{+-}0.8{+-}0.3)x10-6, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We measure A{sub ch}({eta}{prime}K{sup +}) = +0.010{+-}0.022{+-}0.006, A{sub ch}({omega}{pi}{sup +}) = -0.02{+-}0.08{+-}0.01, A{sub ch}({omega}K{sup +}) = -0.01{+-}0.07{+-}0.01, S{sub {eta}{prime}K{sup 0}{sub S}} = 0.56{+-}0.12{+-}0.02, C{sub {eta}{prime}K{sup 0}{sub S}} = -0.24 {+-} 0.08 {+-} 0.03, S{sub {omega}{prime}K{sup 0}{sub S}} = 0.62+0.25 -0.29 {+-} 0.02, and C{sub {omega}{prime}K{sup 0}{sub S}} = -0.39+0.25 -0.24 {+-} 0.03. The result in S{sub {eta}{prime}K{sup 0}{sub S}} contributes to the published measurement from BABAR, which differs from zero by 5.5 standard deviations and is the first observation of mixing-induced CP-violation in a charmless B decay.

Study of Exclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decays toTau Leptons

Description: We present the results of a search for four exclusive semileptonic decays B {yields} D{sup (*)}{tau}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {tau}} in 209 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the BABAR detector, corresponding to 232 million e+e- {yields} {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} events. We select events with a D{sup (*)} meson and a light lepton (e or {mu}) recoiling against a fully-reconstructed B meson. We perform a fit to the lepton spectrum and missing mass squared to discriminate signal events from backgrounds, predominantly B {yields} D{sup (*)}{tau}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {tau}}. A control sample of identified D**{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}} events is included in the fit to estimate the background contribution from these decays. We measure {beta}(B {yields} D{sub {tau}{nu}}) = (0.86{+-}0.24{+-}0.11{+-}0.06)% and {beta}(B {yields} D*{sub {tau}{nu}}) = (1.62{+-}0.31{+-}0.10{+-}0.05)%, where the errors are statistical, systematic, and normalization-mode related, respectively, and where the results are expressed for the {bar B}{sup 0} lifetime.

The Super Flavor Factory

Description: The main physics goals of a high luminosity e{sup +}e{sup -} flavor factory are discussed, including the possibilities to perform detailed studies of the CKM mechanism of quark mixing, and constrain virtual Higgs and Non-Standard Model particle contributions to the dynamics of rare B{sub u,d,s} decays. The large samples of D mesons and {tau} leptons produced at a flavor factory will result in improved sensitivities on D mixing and lepton flavor violation searches, respectively. One can also test fundamental concepts such as lepton universality to much greater precision than existing constraints and improve the precision on tests of CPT from B meson decays. Recent developments in accelerator physics have demonstrated the feasibility to build an accelerator that can achieve luminosities of {Omicron}(10{sup 36} cm{sup -2} s{sup -1}).

Radiative And Electroweak Penguin Decays of B

Description: Radiative and electroweak penguin decays of B mesons are flavor-changing-neutral-current processes that provide powerful ways to test the Standard Model at the one-loop level, to search for the effects of new physics, and to extract Standard Model parameters such as CKM matrix elements and quark masses. The large data samples obtained by the B-factory experiments BaBar and Belle, together with an intensive theoretical effort, have led to significant progress towards understanding these rare decays. Recent experimental results include the measurements of the b {yields} d{gamma} decays B {yields} {rho}({omega}){gamma}, the observation of B {yields} K(*){ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} decays (together with studies of the associated kinematic distributions), and improved measurements of the inclusive B {yields} Xs{gamma} rate and photon energy spectrum.

A search for B_S0 oscillations at the Tevatron collider experiment D0

Description: We present a search for B{sub S}{sup 0} oscillations using semileptonic B{sub S} {yields} D{sub s}{mu}X (D{sub S} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}K). The data were collected using the D0 detector from events produced in {radical}s = 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron. The Tevatron is currently the only place in the world that produces B{sub S}{sup 0} mesons and will be until early 2008 when the Large Hadron Collider begins operating at CERN. One of the vital ingredients for the search for B s oscillations is the determination of the flavor of the B{sub S}{sup 0} candidate (B{sub S}{sup 0} or {bar B}{sub S}{sup 0} ) at the time of its production, called initial state flavor tagging. We develop an likelihood based initial state flavor tagger that uses objects on the side of the event opposite to the reconstructed B meson candidate. To improve the performance of this flavor tagger, we have made it multidimensional so that it takes correlations between discriminants into account. This tagging is then certified by applying it to sample of semimuonic B{sup (0,+)} decays and measuring the well-known oscillation frequency {delta}m{sub d}. We obtain {delta}m{sub d} = 0.486 {+-} 0.021 ps{sup -1}, consistent with the world average. The tagging performance is characterized by the effective efficiency, {epsilon}D{sup 2} = (1.90 {+-} 0.41)%. We then turn to the search for B{sub S}{sup 0} oscillations in the above-named channel. A special two-dimensional mass fitting procedure is developed to separate kinematic reflections from signal events. Using this mass fitting procedure in an unbinned likelihood framework, we obtain a 95% C.L. of {Delta}m{sub s} > 1.10 ps{sup -1} and a sensitivity of 1.92 ps-1. This result is combined with other analyzed B{sub S}{sup 0} decay channels at D0 to obtain a combined 95% C.L. of {Delta}m{sub s} ...

They calculate the product of the B meson decay constant f{sub B} and |V{sub ub}| to be f{sub B} {center_dot} |V{sub ub}| = (7.2{sub -2.8}{sup +2.0}(stat.) {+-} 0.2(syst.)) x 10{sup -4} GeV.

Semileptonic B Decays at BaBar

Description: We present measurements of the inclusive semileptonic branching fractions of charged and neutral B mesons using 20.6 fb-1 of data measured at the Upsilon(4S) with the BABAR detector. Events are tagged with a fully reconstructed hadronic decay of a B meson. The correlation between the flavor of the tag B meson and the electron charge allows the separation of prompt semileptonic B decays and cascade semileptonic charm decays. We obtain the preliminary inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of charged B mesons b+ = 0.103+/-0.006+/-0.005, neutral B mesons b0 = 0.104+/-0.008+/-0.005, their average b = 0.104+/-0.005+/-0.004, and their ratio b+/b0 = 0.99+/-0.10+/-0.03.

Measurement of the Relative Branching Fractions of Bbar to D/D*/D** l- nubar_l Decays in Events with a Fully Reconstructed B Meson

Description: We determine the relative branching fractions of semileptonic B decays to charmed final states. The measurement is performed on the recoil from a fully reconstructed B meson in a sample of 362 million B{bar B} pairs collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. A simultaneous fit to a set of discriminating variables is performed on a sample of {bar B} {yields} DX{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}} decays to determine the contributions from the different channels.

Study of K_S Production with the BaBar Experiment

Description: We study the inclusive production of short-lived neutral kaons (K{sub S}) with the BABAR experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The study is based on a sample of 383 million B{bar B} pairs produced in e{sup +}e{sup -}collisions at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance, in which one B meson has been fully reconstructed. We select a clean sample of K{sub S} mesons and compare kinematic spectra for data and simulation. We find that the simulation overestimates the total production rate of K{sub S} and we see differences in the shape of the K{sub S} momentum spectra. We derive correction factors for different momentum intervals to bring the simulation into better agreement with the observed data.

B Decays Involving Light Mesons

Description: Recent BABAR results for decays of B-mesons to combinations of non-charm mesons are presented. This includes B decays to two vector mesons, B {yields} {eta}{prime}({pi}, K, {rho}) modes, and a comprehensive Dalitz Plot analysis of B {yields} KKK decays.
