The Uranium-Rhenium Alloy System

Description: Abstract The phase diagram of the uranium-rhenium alloy system is presented along with a discussion on transformation kinetics of the uranium solid solutions. The phase diagram is of the double eutectic type with the intermediate phase having the composition URe2. This phase exhibits allotropy at 180°C and melts congruently at 2200°C. URe2 reacts sluggishly with the uranium solid solutions below 750°C to form the peritectoid compound U2Re. Eutectic reactions occur at 1105° and 2105°C at respec… more

The Solubility of Holmium in Copper, Silver, and Gold

Description: From Abstract: "The solid solubility of holmium in copper, silver, and gold was determined using metallographic techniques. The composition of the first intermetallic compound in these systems was found to be Cu4Ho, Ag7Ho2, and Au3Ho. These compounds form eutectics with the solvent metals which melt at 868, 787, and 778°C respectively."

Propagation Characteristics of Capillary Ripples II. Instrumentation for Measurement of Ripple Velocity and Amplitude

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "An instrument for measuring the propagation velocity of capillary ripples to within 0.3% and for measuring the amplitude of such ripples to within 1 to 10% (depending upon amplitude) was designed and constructed. The principle components of the instrument were a Teflon Langmuir trough (with provision for automatic recording of compression data); generating and receiving probes consisting of a thin rod and a razor blade respectively mounted so that the rod and … more

The Crystal Structure of Bismuth Subchloride

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The stoichiometric formula of the lower chloride in the BiCl3-Bi system has been established as Bi12Cl14 (BiCl1.167) through a dingle crystal, X-ray determination of its structure. ... Previous studies of the Bi-Cl3-Bi system are re-examined in the light of the structural results."

Solution of Metals in Their Molten Salts. Some Manganese, Chromium, Uranium and Antimony Systems

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Preparations of high purity MnCl2, CrCl2, CrI2, UBr4, UI3 and Sb4S3 are described; the melting points obtained for CrI2 (868°) and Sb2S3 (559.5°) are significantly higher than previously reported. The small solubilities of manganese and chromium in the respective halides studied were characterized primarily by the depression of the freezing points of the salts by excess metal."

A Study of the Rare Earth Metal Propionate Complexes

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The first two successive formation constants of the trivalent rare earth metals with the proportionate ligand were determined by a potentiometric method. A comparison was made of the trends in the stability constants of the proportionate ligand as one proceeds through the rare earth series with the trends observed for several other ligands. Attempts to explain some of the trends have been summarized."

Propagation Characteristics of Capillary Ripples, I. The Theory of Velocity Dispersion and Amplitude Attenuation of Plane Capillary Waves on Viscoelastic Films

Description: From abstract: "The boundary value problem for velocity of propagation and attenuation of capillary ripples over viscoelastic surface films is set up and solved from the viewpoint of continuum hydrodynamics. Both soluble and insoluble films are treated. Successive approximation methods are used to derive explicit formulae for velocity of propagation and amplitude attenuation; formulae for these quantities accurate to second order are given for slightly viscoelastic and highly viscoelastic films… more

Propagation Characteristics of Capillary Ripples, III. Capillary Ripple Velocity and Attenuation Dispersion on Clean Water Surfaces and on Various Monolayers

Description: From Abstract: "The theory and instrumentation previously described by us were applied to the systems monolayer-free distilled water; stearic acid, mixed hexadecanol and octadecanol and several long chain fatty ester monolayers; stearic acid - polyvinyl acetate mixed films and egg albumen spread films; heptanoic acid adsorbed monolayers."
