Very high Mach number shocks: theory

Description: The theory and simulation of collisionless perpendicular supercritical shock structure is reviewed, with major emphasis on recent research results. The primary tool of investigation is the hybrid simulation method, in which the Newtonian orbits of a large number of ion macroparticles are followed numerically, and in which the electrons are treated as a charge neutralizing fluid. The principal results to be presented are (1) electron resistivity is not required to explain the observed quasi-stat… more

/sup 252/Cf-source-driven neutron noise analysis method

Description: The /sup 252/Cf-source-driven neutron noise analysis method has been tested in a wide variety of experiments that have indicated the broad range of applicability of the method. The neutron multiplication factor k/sub eff/ has been satisfactorily detemined for a variety of materials including uranium metal, light water reactor fuel pins, fissile solutions, fuel plates in water, and interacting cylinders. For a uranyl nitrate solution tank which is typical of a fuel processing or reprocessing pla… more

Data interpretation, objective evaluation procedures and mathematical techniques for the evaluation of energy-dependent ratio, shape and cross section data

Description: The evaluation of several energy-dependent neutron cross sections which are of importance for practical applications is considered. The evaluation process is defined as the procedure which is used to derive the best knowledge of these cross sections based on the available direct experimental data information, and, using theoretical models, on the auxiliary data base. The experimental data base represents a multiple overdetermination of the unknown cross sections with various correlations betwee… more

Solving iTOUGH2 simulation and optimization problems using the PEST protocol

Description: The PEST protocol has been implemented into the iTOUGH2 code, allowing the user to link any simulation program (with ASCII-based inputs and outputs) to iTOUGH2's sensitivity analysis, inverse modeling, and uncertainty quantification capabilities. These application models can be pre- or post-processors of the TOUGH2 non-isothermal multiphase flow and transport simulator, or programs that are unrelated to the TOUGH suite of codes. PEST-style template and instruction files are used, respectively, … more

On the need and use of models to explore the role of economic confidence:a survey.

Description: Empirical studies suggest that consumption is more sensitive to current income than suggested under the permanent income hypothesis, which raises questions regarding expectations for future income, risk aversion, and the role of economic confidence measures. This report surveys a body of fundamental economic literature as well as burgeoning computational modeling methods to support efforts to better anticipate cascading economic responses to terrorist threats and attacks. This is a three part s… more

Modeling patterns in data using linear and related models

Description: This report considers the use of linear models for analyzing data related to reliability and safety issues of the type usually associated with nuclear power plants. The report discusses some of the general results of linear regression analysis, such as the model assumptions and properties of the estimators of the parameters. The results are motivated with examples of operational data. Results about the important case of a linear regression model with one covariate are covered in detail. This ca… more

Perspective on TeV-scale physics

Description: These lectures review theoretical motivations and experimental prospects for the study of TeV-scale physics. Three clues to the importance of TeV physics are discussed: implications of quantum corrections for the masses of a fourth generation quark-lepton family, the gauge hierarchy problem and known solutions, and implications of symmetry and unitarity for the symmetry-breaking sector of the electroweak gauge theory. The experimental prospects are reviewed with emphasis on the multi-TeV pp col… more

Laboratory Directed Research and Development FY 2000 Annual Progress Report

Description: This is the FY00 Annual Progress report for the Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory. It gives an overview of the LDRD Program, summarizes progress on each project conducted during FY00, characterizes the projects according to their relevance to major funding sources, and provides an index to principal investigators. Project summaries are grouped by LDRD component: Directed Research and Exploratory Research. Within each component, they ar… more

Civilian Power Reactor Program. Part 3. Book 3. Status Report on Aqueous Homogeneous Reactors as of 1959

Description: The status of a program to develop a thermal breeder power reactor which is based on the Th-U/sup 233/ cycle is discussed. The general characteristics of two-region power breeder reactors which are either solution-core slurryblanket or slurry-core slurry-blanket are described. A review of studies on corrosion, physical properties, and metallurgy of fuel materials, in particular aqueous ThO/ sub 2/ suspensions, is presented. Development studies on cladding alloys are discussed. The processing of… more
