Progress Report of Southeastern Monazite Exploration, 1952

Description: Report about monzanite placers in streams of the western part of the Piedmont in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The objective of the report is to describe local monazite deposits, to determine geologic controls of monazite placers in the southeastern Piedmont, and to evaluate placer potentialities of the area.

Preliminary Report : Trace Elements Investigations in the Sweepstakes Creek Area, Koyuk District, Seward Peninsula, Alaska

Description: The following report provides information and findings of trace elements recognized in a few placer concentrates from Sweepstakes and Rube Creeks in the Koyuk district of eastern Seward Peninsula, Alaska when old collections were scanned for radioactivity in the spring of 1945.

Control Chart Method Applied to Errors in Radioactive Counting

Description: Abstract: The Control Chart statistical methods, developed by Showhart for the control of quality of manufactured products, are applied to the control of Geiger-Miller counting instruments. Experiments are reported to show the use to the Control Chart method for detecting disturbances in instrumental behavior and for detecting radioactive effects so weak that they are near the limit of detection of the instruments. As a corollary, the control chart can be used to reduce to its practical limit the time required for tests.

Preliminary Report on Methods of Analysis for very Small Percentages of Uranium

Description: Abstract: Procedures are presented in detail of two methods for the determination of very small percentages or uranium (down to 0.0025). The methods are applicable to a wide variety of materials. Notes on the methods and confirmatory experiments are also given.

Trace Elements Investigations in the Cache Creek - Upper Peters Creek Area, Yentna District, Alaska

Description: The following report provides findings of trace elements from investigations on Cache and upper Peters Creeks in the Tentana District, Alaska after discovering radioactive minerals within Geological Survey's collection of Alaskan placer deposits. This investigation took place in the summer of 1945.

Preliminary Report Trace Elements Investigations Hickman and Adjacent Counties, Tenn.

Description: The following report describes the findings from an investigation of a uranium-bearing strata undertaken in Hickman and adjacent counties in west-central Tennessee during the summer and fall of 1944. The strata contained radioactive elements within the Chattanooga shale and the Maury glauconitic member of the Ridgetop shale.

Molar Volumes and Densities of Minerals

Description: The following report presents tables critically chosen for the "best values" for the density and molar volume of selected mineral compounds. The intent to the selection was not to be inclusive, but to present data for chemically and physically well-defined phases for which the molar volume and/or density was known to the order of 0.2 percent.

Strontium Sorption Studies on Crandallite

Description: Abstract: "Crandallite ores may be useful in the treatment of nuclear waste solutions because of their reactivity with strontium in weakly acid solutions and in alkaline solutions containing aluminum. The exchange capacity of the crandallite samples studies is not very high, being 6-10 miliequivalents of strontium and 2 milliequivalents of cesium per 100 grams of active phosphatic material. However, strontium removal is many times more effective from alkaline solutions, precipitation being the dominant mechanism. The removal of strontium is even more complete in alkaline solutions containing aluminate ions."
