NACA Mach number indicator for use in high-speed tunnels

Description: Report presenting a description of a device for indicating stream Mach number in a high-speed tunnel. It consists of a mechanism for determining the pressure ratio that Mach number is a function of. The instrument is in service in the 8-foot high-speed tunnel and its accuracy has been found adequate for wind-tunnel requirements.

Description: Report presenting tests on an exhaust-gas turbine with four separate nozzle boxes each covering a 90 degree arc of the nozzle diaphragm and each connected to a pair of adjacent cylinders in a Pratt & Whitney R-1340-12 nine-cylinder radial engine. Results regarding the power output of the engine and turbine, effect of the turbine on engine power, turbine power output and speed characteristics, mean turbine efficiency, effect of the blowdown turbine on exhaust-gas temperature, and condition of the blowdown turbine after tests are provided.

The development and application of high-critical-speed nose inlets

Description: From Summary: "An analysis of the nose-inlet shapes developed in previous investigations to represent the optimum from the standpoint of critical speed has shown that marked similarity exists between the nondimensional profiles of inlets which have widely different proportions and critical speeds. With the nondimensional similarity of such profiles established, the large differences in the critical speeds of these nose inlets must be a function of their proportions. An investigation was undertaken in the Langley 8-foot high-speed tunnel to establish the effects of nose-inlet proportions on critical Mach number and to develop a rational method for the design of high-critical-speed nose inlets to meet desired requirements."

A Concise Theoretical Method for Profile-Drag Calculation; Advance Report

Description: In this report a method is presented for the calculation of the profile drag of airfoil sections. The method requlres only a knowledge of the theoretical velocity distribution and can be applied readily once this dlstribution is ascertained. Comparison of calculated and experimental drag characteristics for several airfoils shows a satisfactory agreement. Sample calculatlons are included.

NACA Investigation of a Jet-Propulsion System Applicable to Flight

Description: "Following a brief history of the NACA investigation of jet-propulsion, a discussion is given of the general investigation and analyses leading to the construction of the jet-propulsion ground-test mock-up. The results of burning experiments and of test measurements designed to allow quantitative flight-performance predictions of the system are presented and correlated with calculations. These calculations are then used to determine the performance of the system on the ground and in the air at various speeds and altitudes under various burning conditions. The application of the system to an experimental airplane is described and some performance predictions for this airplane are made" (p. 1).

Results regarding the propeller characteristics, drag and cowling-air flow with the propeller removed, the effect of propeller on flow through cowling, and the influence of cooling requirements on airplane performance are provided.

Profile-Drag Coefficients of Conventional and Low-Drag Airfoils as Obtained in Flight

Description: "The results of flight investigations of the profile drag of several carefully finished conventional and low-drag airfoils are presented. The results indicated that in all cases lower profile-drag coefficients were obtained with the low-drag than with the conventional airfoils over the range of lift coefficient tested and that, for comparable conditions of lift coefficient and Reynolds number, the low-drag airfoils may have profile-drag coefficients which are at least 27 percent lower than the profile-drag coefficients of the conventional airfoils" (p.1).

Determination of General Relations for the Behavior of Turbulent Boundary Layers

On the Flow of a Compressible Fluid by the Hodography Method 2: Fundamental Set of Particular Flow Solutions of the Chaplygin Differential Equation

Description: Report presenting the utilization of the differential equation of Chaplygin's jet problem to give a systematic development of particular solutions of the hodograph flow equations, which extends the treatment of Chaplygin into the supersonic range and completes the set of particular solutions. The solutions serve to place on a reasonable basis the use of velocity correction formulas for the comparison of incompressible and compressible flows.

Experiments on Drag of Revolving Disks, Cylinders and Streamline Rods at High Speeds

An Experimental Investigation of NACA Submerged-Duct Entrances

Description: The results of a preliminary investigation of submerged duct entrances are presented. It is shown that an entrance of this type possess desirable critical speed and pressure recovery characteristics when used on a fuselage or nacelle in a region of low incremental velocity and thin boundary layer. The data obtained indicate that submerged entrances are most suitable for use with internal-flow systems which diffuse the air only a small amount: for example, those used with jet motors which have axial-flow compressors. Where complete diffusion of the air is required, fuselage-nose or wing leading edge inlets may prove to be superior. The results of the investigation have been prepared in such a form as to permit their use by a designer and the application of these data to a specific design is discussed.

Wind-tunnel investigation of control-surface characteristics 17: beveled-trailing-edge flaps of 0.20, 0.30, and 0.40 airfoil chord on an NACA 0009 airfoil

Description: Report presenting force tests in two-dimensional flow in the 4- by 6-foot vertical tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of an NACA 0009 airfoil with flaps having chord at 3 locations of the airfoil chord and three degrees of the beveled trailing edges. The results indicated that, with a smooth leading edge, the increased trailing-edge angle on the flaps with sealed gaps decreased the slope of the control-fixed lift curve and the lift effectiveness.

Wind-tunnel investigation of control-surface characteristics 13: various flap overhangs used with a 30-percent-chord flap in an NACA 66-009 airfoil

Description: Report presenting force tests in two-dimensional flow made on an NACA 66-009 airfoil with a flap having a chord 30 percent of the airfoil chord and a tab having a chord 20 percent of the flap chord. A plain flap and flaps having overhangs of 35 and 50 percent of the flap chord were tested with two gap variations: sealed and unsealed. Results regarding lift, flap hinge moments, pitching moments, drag, and tab characteristics are provided.

Flight Investigation at High Speeds of Profile Drag of Wing of a P-47D Airplane Having Production Surfaces Covered with Camouflage Paint

Description: Wing section outboard of flap was tested by wake surveys in Mach range of 0.25 - 0.78 and lift coefficient range 0.06 - 0.69. Results indicated that minimum profile-drag coefficient of 0.0097 was attained for lift coefficients from 0.16 to 0.25 at Mach less than 0.67. Below Mach number at which compressibility shock occurred, variations in Mach of 0.2 had negligible effect on profile drag coefficient. Shock was not evident until critical Mach was exceeded by 0.025.

Wind-tunnel investigation of ailerons on a low-drag airfoil 1: The effect of aileron profile

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel of the effects of various modifications to the profile of a 0.20-chord plain sealed aileron and a 0.15-chord plain sealed aileron on an NACA 66,2-216 airfoil. Thickening of the aileron was found to reduce the aileron effectiveness, reduce the slope of the wing section lift curve, and reduce the hinge-moment coefficients. Results regarding the section data, aileron effectiveness, aileron hinge moments, lift, pitching moment, drag, and Reynolds number are provided.

NACA Radio Ground-Speed System for Aircraft

Description: Report presenting a method utilizing the Doppler effect on radio signals for determining the speed and distance traveled of an airplane. The method is called the NACA radio ground-speed system and uses the standard radio transmitter already found in most aircraft. Preliminary Report on Laminar-Flow Airfoils and New Methods Adopted for Airfoil and Boundary-Layer Investigations

Description: Recent developments in airfoil-testing methods and fundamental air-flow investigations, as applied to airfoils, are discussed. Preliminary test results, obtained under conditions relatively free from stream turbulence and other disturbances, are presented. Suitable airfoils and airfoil-design principles were developed to take advantage of the unusually extensive laminar boundary layers that may be maintained under the improved testing conditions. The results are of interest mainly in range of below 6,000,000.
