NURE Aerial Gamma-Ray and Magnetic Reconnaissance Survey of Portions of New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, Final Report: Volume 2-E, Holbrook Quadrangle

Description: The results of a high-sensitivity, aerial gamma-ray spectrometer and magnetometer survey of the Holbrook two degree quadrangle, Arizona are presented. Instrumentation and methods are described in Volume 1 of this final report. The work was done by Carson Helicopters, Inc., and Carson Helicopters was assisted in the interpretation by International Exploration, Inc. The work was performed for the US Department of Energy - National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program. Analysis of this radiometric data yielded 260 statistically significant eU anomalies. Of this number, forty-four were considered to be of sufficient strength to warrant further investigation. These preferred anomalies are separated into groups having some geologic aspect in common.

Analyses of Decay Curves of Irradiated Plastics

Description: The following report covers the results of a general program that was conducted at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to investigate the effects on plastic materials of exposure to radiation in the pile. In the investigation, several plastics were irradiated, and on removal from the pile, their rates of decay were determined by measurement of gamma activity in an ionization chamber.

Alpha Particle Detection and the A. C. Operated Detector "A" (Howler)

Description: Abstract: This discussion concerns the operation, construction, and servicing of an alpha rate meter of medium sensitivity (30,000 alpha particles full scale per minute) and good stability. The instrument is equipped with an oscillator which increases both in frequency and loudness as the alpha activity is increased. The oscillator circuit includes an anticipator which causes a change in frequency depending directly upon the rate of change of alpha activity. Maximum sensitivity is approximately 100 millivolts full scale. Grid current varies from 1 to 5 x 10^-14 amperes. A general discussion of time constants and accuracy is included. Tables of stopping power, ionization and alpha activity are appended.

Analysis of Lid Tank Neutron Data for Lead and Iron

Description: Abstract: An analysis of the lid tank neutron data for Pb-H2O and Fe-H2O is made. "Effective" fast neutron cross sections for the metals are obtained. This is based on the "one collision theory" of shielding. Values are 3.4 barns for Pb and 2.0 barns for Fe. These compare very well with those obtained by Albert and Welton based on other lid tank data and another method of calculation.

Final technical report for contract year November 9, 1947 to November 9, 1948

Description: Report describing processes to prepare metallic calcium of a very high purity. Report details promising methods for electrolyte purification. Methods of chemical analysis for nitrogen are also improved upon and spectrochemical methods and standards established for twelve other specified elements.

Approximate methods for pile design calculations

Description: From introduction: "At a certain stage in the design of a pile there come a time when it is urgent to obtain day to day answers on the effects of various changes in the design parameters... It is hoped that the procedures described in the present memo will serve as a bridge between the crudest diffusion theory calculations and the more elaborate multi-group methods."

The Application of Tracer Techniques to the Determination of Uranium Extraction Coefficients

Description: Abstract: This report deals with the development of a method using tracer technique for determining uranium extraction coefficients on solutions of low uranium concentration. It was found that extraction coefficients could be determined on systems containing as low as one part per million uranium using 1900 level uranium as the tracer. Results of several extraction series are presented in which aluminum nitrate is used as the salting agent and dibutyl carbitol the organic extractant.

Insufflation studies in rabbits with dusts of uranium compounds

Description: From abstract: "In a large series of rabbits, both the responses exhibited by the animal and the fate of the dose have been observed following the intratracheal insufflation of a soluble (uranyl nitrate) and an insoluble (U30g) compound, large (100mg) and small (5 and 10mg) doses have been given. For comparison, in a third series of tests a large fose of uranyl nitrate was injected intramuscularly."

Analysis of uranium hexafluoride-hydrogen fluoride solutions by freezing point determination : errors caused by liquid -vapor equilibrium

Description: A report detailing the analysis of uranium hexafluoride-hydrogen fluoride solutions by their freezing point determination. This analysis was conducted by measuring vapor pressures at the freezing temperatures of different compositions of uranium hexafluoride-hydrogren fluoride solutions.

Analytical methods and results

Description: Report detailing the analytical methods and results of a study designed to measure the total alpha particle activity of samples. The method being used was previously in use at Columbia University. The report recognizes potential for grave errors, but makes no effort to minimize the effect of the roughness of the sample.

Analytical procedure for determination of tuballoy in solid salvage residues

Description: From abstract: Test results indicate that the hydrofluorination method for the analysis of tuballoy in solid salvage residues yields sufficient results with a high degree of accuracy; while a modification of the procedure gives good results in approximately half the time.
