Calculation of Upper Subcritical Limits for Nuclear Criticality in a Repository

Description: The purpose of this document is to present the methodology to be used for development of the Subcritical Limit (SL) for post closure conditions for the Yucca Mountain repository. The SL is a value based on a set of benchmark criticality multiplier, k{sub eff} results that are outputs of the MCNP calculation method. This SL accounts for calculational biases and associated uncertainties resulting from the use of MCNP as the method of assessing k{sub eff}. The context for an SL estimate include th… more

Integrated models for plasma/material interaction during loss of plasma confinement.

Description: A comprehensive computer package, High Energy Interaction with General Heterogeneous Target Systems (HEIGHTS), has been developed to evaluate the damage incurred on plasma-facing materials during loss of plasma confinement. The HEIGHTS package consists of several integrated computer models that follow the start of a plasma disruption at the scrape-off layer (SOL) through the transport of the eroded debris and splashed target materials to nearby locations as a result of the energy deposited. The… more

Coupled neutronic and thermal-hydraulic code benchmark activities at the International Nuclear Safety Center.

Description: Two realistic benchmark problems are defined and used to assess the performance of coupled thermal-hydraulic and neutronic codes used in simulating dynamic processes in VVER-1000 and RBMK reactor systems. One of the problems simulates a design basis accident involving the ejection of three control and protection system rods from a VVER-1000 reactor. The other is based on a postulated rod withdrawal from an operating RBMK reactor. Preliminary results calculated by various codes are compared. Whi… more

Uranium and plutonium solution assays by transmission-corrected x-ray fluorescence

Description: We have developed an x-ray fluorescence analysis technique for uranium and plutonium solutions which compensates for variations in the absorption of the exciting gamma rays and fluorescent x-rays. We use {sup 57}Co to efficiently excite the K lines of the elements, and a mixed {sup 57}Co plus {sup 153}Gd transmission source to correct for variations in absorption. The absorption correction is a unique feature of our technique which permits accurate calibration with a single solution standard an… more

Electrometallurgical treatment of aluminum-based fuels.

Description: We have successfully demonstrated aluminum electrorefining from a U-Al-Si alloy that simulates spent aluminum-based reactor fuel. The aluminum product contains less than 200 ppm uranium. All the results obtained have been in agreement with predictions based on equilibrium thermodynamics. We have also demonstrated the need for adequate stirring to achieve a low-uranium product. Most of the other process steps have been demonstrated in other programs. These include uranium electrorefining, transu… more

Null-plane invariance of Hamiltonian null-plane dynamics.

Description: Relativistic Hamiltonian few-body dynamics [1,2] involves two unitary representations of the Poincare group on the Hilbert space H of physical states, with and without interactions. These two representations, U({Lambda}, a) and U{sub 0}({Lambda},a), coincide for a kinematic subgroup H. The ''Hamiltonians'' are the generators not in the Lie algebra of the kinematic subgroup. The kinematic subgroup of null-plane dynamics leaves the null-plane z {center_dot} x {triple_bond} x{sup 0} + x{sub 3} = 0… more

Vibratory response of a precision double-multi-layer monochromator positioning system using a generic modeling program with experimental verification.

Description: A generic vibratory response-modeling program has been developed as a tool for designing high-precision optical positioning systems. The systems are modeled as rigid-body structures connected by linear non-rigid elements such as complex actuators and bearings. The full dynamic properties of each non-rigid element are determined experimentally or theoretically, then integrated into the program as inertial and stiffness matrices. Thus, it is possible to have a suite of standardize structural elem… more

324 Building liquid waste handling and removal system project plan

Description: This report evaluates the modification options for handling radiological liquid waste generated during decontamination and cleanout of the 324 Building. Recent discussions indicate that the Hanford site railroad system will be closed by the end of FY 1998 necessitating the need for an alternate transfer method. The issue of handling of Radioactive Liquid Waste (RLW) from the 324 Building (assuming the 340 Facility is not available to accept the RLW) has been examined in at least two earlier eng… more

Two-phase flow measurements by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Final technical report, January 1, 1993--September 30, 1997

Description: Researchers pioneered NMR studies of concentrated suspensions starting in the late 1980`s (Majors, et al., 1989; Altobelli, et al., 1991; Abbott, et al., 1991). In those studies, they measured concentration and velocity of the liquid component either in pipe or Couette flow. If one compares these early studies of suspensions with more recent ones, imaging time has gone from 40 minutes to 8 minutes and the imaging matrix has increased from 32 x 32 to 128 x 128. In the interim, many concentrated … more

REPOSITORY ENGINEERED BARRIER SYSTEM DESIGN

Description: A Viability Assessment (VA) for the Yucca Mountain Project is being completed for delivery in September of 1998. A major element of the VA is the design of a high level waste repository on the Nevada Test Site. The repository is made up of surface and subsurface facilities. The engineered barrier includes the man-made elements of the system that act to retard the migration of radionuclides from a geologic repository. They act in conjunction with the geologic barriers present at Yucca Mountain. … more

Fermiology of the organic superconductor {beta}''-(ET){sub 2}SF{sub 5}CH{sub 2}CF{sub 2}SO{sub 3}.

Description: We present a detailed Fermi-surface (FS) investigation of the quasi two-dimensional (2D) organic superconductor (T{sub c} {approx} 4.5 K) {beta}{double_prime}(ET){sub 2}SF{sub 5}CH{sub 2}CF{sub 2}SO{sub 3}. In line with previous investigations, de Haas-van Alphen measurements in pulsed fields up to 60 T show a single oscillation frequency, F{sub 0} = 200 T, which corresponds to a FS size of about 5% of the first Brillouin zone. Angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMROs) are utiliz… more

Spectroscopy of N=82,83 {sup 136,137}Xe isotopes from {sup 248}Cm fission.

Description: Prompt {gamma}-ray cascades in neutron-rich nuclei around doubly magic {sup 132}Sn have been studied at Eurogam II using a {sup 348}Cm fission source. Here they report results for the four-valence-proton N = 82 nucleus {sup 136}Xe and for its N = 83 neighbor {sup 137}Xe. For both nuclei, the yrast level spectra have been considerably extended, and empirical nucleon-nucleon interactions have been used to assign probable shell model configurations for most of the observed levels.
