Improving Text Classification with Large Language Model-Based Data Augmentation

Description: The authors assert that previous studies approach data augmentation by either rewriting the existing dataset with ChatGPT or generating entirely new data from scratch. This study investigates the application of both methods to two datasets, a general-topic dataset and a domain-specific dataset.

TA-RNN: an attention-based time-aware recurrent neural network architecture for electronic health records

Description: In this article the authors propose two interpretable DL architectures based on RNN, namely time-aware RNN (TA-RNN) and TA-RNN-autoencoder (TA-RNN-AE) to predict patient’s clinical outcome in EHR at the next visit and multiple visits ahead, respectively. For interpretability, the authors propose employing a dual-level attention mechanism that operates between visits and features within each visit.

Climate, food and humans predict communities of mammals in the United States

Description: This article states that the assembly of species into communities and ecoregions is the result of interacting factors that affect plant and animal distribution and abundance at biogeographic scales. Here, the authors empirically derive ecoregions for mammals to test whether human disturbance has become more important than climate and habitat resources in structuring communities.

Elite class self-interest, socioeconomic inequality and U.S. population health

Description: This article asserts that class-based perspectives on the persistent social gradients in health within modern welfare states largely focus on the adverse consequences of unfettered neoliberalism and entrenched meritocratic socioeconomic selection. The authors conclude that sociological theories of elite class self-interest usefully complement theories of the psychosocial effects of neoliberalism and of meritocratic social selection while answering recent calls for research on the role advantage… more

Biophotons: A Hard Problem

Description: In this article the authors present their experimental work on the biophotons coming from germinating seeds, the main experimental results, and some new methods they are using to analyze the data to open the door for interpretative models of this phenomenon clarifying its function in the regulation and communication between cells and living organisms. They also discuss ideas on how to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the measured signal to open up new experimental possibilities that allow … more

Swimming Performance Assessments of Fish Species of Greatest Conservation Need to Inform Future Stream Crossing Designs in Texas

Description: This article focused on four fish species of greatest conservation need (SGCN) native to the Edwards Plateau Ecoregion, namely the Guadalupe Bass, Guadalupe Roundnose Minnow, Guadalupe Darter, and Plateau Shiner. The authors' primary aim was to aid in the design of future culverts associated with stream crossings so that the water velocities through these structures do not exceed the swimming capacities of the SGCN fishes.
